1950s The Decade the public learned heterosexual women wanted sex

1955:The “Village Voice” newspaper is launched. Founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher, John Wilcock, and Norman Mailer, the Voice began as a platform for the creative community of New York City. No longer in print, it is still kept alive online. The publication faced a controversial reputation because of its referral to the Stonewall Riots in 1969 as “The Great Faggot Rebellion.” However, in 1982 it reportedly became the first United States private employer to offer its employees same-sex partner benefits. 1956 – Neil G. Giuliano (born October 26, 1956) is an American politician who served as mayor of Tempe, Arizona for four terms, from 1994 to 2004 (Three two-year terms and one four-year term). After serving in elected office he served as President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) from 2005 to 2009, and served as President/CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation from December 2010 to December 2015,. Giuliano was the first directly-elected openly gay mayor in the United States, and Tempe was the largest city in America with an openly gay mayor for nearly six years, 1996- 2001.

1962: New York police raided a drag ball called the National Variety Artists Exotic Carnival and Ball. The cops arrested dozens of attendees at the event and charged them with indecent exposure.

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

 October 26, 1970A wake was held at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin. The singer who died of an accidental drugs overdose had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her demise. The party was attended by her sister Laura and Joplin’s close friends; Brownies laced with hashish were unknowingly passed around amongst the guests. Joplin was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Los Angeles; her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach.

Elton John released the single “Your Song”, at the time the “B” side of the “A” side “Take Me To The Pilot”.

1973: Mark Segal, the leader of an activist group called The Gay Raiders, interrupted “The Today Show.” He was attempting to protest the stereotypical portrayals of gay people on NBC. It was reportedly his third arrest.

1974

USA song charts: “The Bitch Is Back” by Elton John was fifth.

October 26, 1975 Elton John knew how to close out his highly successful tour in style.  Decked out in a sequined Los Angeles Dodger outfit, Elton played the second and final night at Dodger Stadium.

1985

Whitney Houston went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Saving All My Love For You’, also a No.1 hit in the UK.

1988, Ireland – The European Court of Human Rights rules that laws in Ireland criminalizing sex between men are in violation of the Charter of Human Rights. The court was petitioned by David Norris, an MP in the Dail of Ireland

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1990: After appearing in drag at an AIDS benefit and kissing another man, a U.S. Colonel was discharged and sentenced to 90 days in Leavenworth, a United States penitentiary. This occurred before both the implementation and repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

1991

Erasure climbed to #1 on the U.K. Album chart with Chorus.

1992 –

Portland Oregon police chief Tom Potter testified before a state senate committee, saying many victims of anti-gay assaults do not report the crimes because of fear that their identities will be made public.

Cissy Houston, Odetta, Judy Collins, Carly Simon, Lucy Simon (Carly’s sister), Lesley Gore, Maureen McGovern, and the Roaches recorded “America the Beautiful” and “Michael Row the Boat Ashore” as the Clintones for torchlight parades across America to promote the Women Light the Way for Change cause.

Before emptying his glass on her from the stage, George was heard shouting, “Why don’t you shut the f**k up, you rude c**t!”

Chappelle said he has three conditions for those who want to meet with him: “You must come to a place of my choosing, at a time of my choosing. And thirdly, you must admit that Hannah Gadsby is not funny.”

1926 – Edward John Barrington Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu (20 October 1926 – 31 August 2015) was an English Conservative politician well known in Britain for founding the National Motor Museum, as well as for a pivotal cause célèbrein British gay history following his 1954 conviction and imprisonment for homosexual sex, a charge he denied. Having inherited his title at the age of two, he held his peerage for the third longest time (86 years and 155 days) anyone has held a British peerage (the others being the 7th Marquess Townshend at 88 years, and the 13th Lord Sinclairat 87 years).

1958 – Truman Capote’s (September 30, 1924 – August 25, 1984) novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s is published in the November issue of Esquire Magazine. Capote was an American novelist, screenwriter, playwright, and actor. Many of Capote’s short stories, novels, plays, and nonfiction are recognized as literary classics, including the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958) and the true crime novel In Cold Blood (1966) which he labeled a “nonfiction novel“. At least 20 films and television dramas have been produced from Capote novels, stories, and plays. Capote was openly homosexual. One of his first serious lovers was Smith College literature professor Newton Arvin(August 25, 1900 – March 21, 1963) who won the National Book Award for his Herman Melville biography in 1951 and to whom Capote dedicated Other Voices, Other Rooms. Capote spent the majority of his life until his death with Jack Dunphy(August 22, 1914 – April 26, 1992), a fellow writer.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1969 – The National Institutes of Mental Health releases a report based on a study led by psychologist Dr. Evelyn Hooker. The report urged states to repeal sodomy laws.

David Bowie released his seventh album Pin Ups. The album, which features supermodel Twiggy on the front cover, is a collection of cover versions of some of the singer’s favourite songs, including tracks by Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, The Who, The Yardbirds and The Kinks.

Over fifty ACT-UP members are arrested during an act of civil disobedience protesting President Reagan’s lack of action to the AIDS epidemic. Another demonstration of about 150 people was held across the street from the United Nations building during the UN General Assembly’s first debate on AIDS.

The US House of Representatives voted 368-47 to approve an amendment to withhold federal funding from any AIDS education organization which encourages homosexual activity. The senate approved a similar amendment the previous week by a vote of 94-2. It was introduced by Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina. The U.S. House Judiciary Committee voted 21-13 to approve a bill requiring the justice department to collect statistics on hate crimes, including anti-gay violence.

1988 – Sixty ACT-UP protestors shut down the filming of NBC’s “Midnight Caller” in San Francisco due to the plot in which a bisexual man is intentionally infecting others with HIV. This is the first gay-related disruption of a filming since the 1979 protests against the film “Cruising” in New York City.

1991 – An episode of Fox’s Roc tv series (season 1, episode 8)airing on October 20 (“Can’t Help Loving That Man”) depicted the second same-sex marriage on U.S. prime time television

1992 – The San Diego Police Department announces that it was severing its ties with the Boy Scouts of America due to a local chapter’s dismissal of a gay police officer who was involved with the Explorer program.


1993 – Roman Catholic priest Rev. Andre Guindon dies of a heart attack at age 60. In his book “The Sexual Creators,” he wrote that heterosexuals should look to same-sex couples to learn about tenderness and sharing.

1997 – Portugal’s first Gay and Lesbian Community Centre opens in Lisbon.

2005

Bono of U2 was invited to the White House where he discussed the G8 and fighting AIDS with U.S. President George W. Bush.

A survey concluded that the average person spent around £21,000 ($42,000) on music during their lives, the figure included the amount spent on Hi-Fi equipment, concerts and CDs. Music enthusiasts were likely to spend more than double that, parting with just over £44,000 ($89,000), in a lifetime, according to the survey conducted by UK company Prudential.

2006

NBC said that it had decided not to show pictures of Madonna mounting a crucifix. The footage was from a concert special to be aired the following month

2010,

Canada – Teenager Brittany McMillan uses Tumblr to call on people to wear purple on this day to show support for bullied LGBT youth. The day is known as Spirit Day. The first Gay Spirit day is Celebrated Worldwide. It then became celebrated on the third Thursday of October.

Elton John described today’s songwriters as “pretty awful”, Pop music as “uninspiring” and talent shows like American Idol as “boring” in an interview with UK Radio Times magazine.

2021

“In “The Closer,” Chappelle describes a U.S. rapper who “punched the LGBTQ community right in the AIDS,” compares trans women to the use of Blackface, and jokes about threatening to kill a woman and stash her body in his car. “

1977:

David Bowie released his twelfth studio album Heroes, the second installment of his Berlin Trilogy with Brian Eno (the other releases being Low and Lodger). Heroes continued the ambient experiments of Bowie’s previous album Low (released earlier that year) and featured the contributions of guitarist Robert Fripp. The album was later named NME Album of the Year.

Anita Bryant, a high-visibility anti-gay crusader, received a pie to the face during a press conference in Des Moines, Iowa at the hands of gay rights activist Tom Higgins. After saying “at least it was a fruit pie,” Bryant went on to pray for Higgins’ salvation. (h/t Quist) Some believe that her husband Bob Green orchestrated the attack for publicity.

1978

The “Grease” Soundtrack returned to #1 on the Album chart for the third time and 10th week total. and on the song charts  Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta had song #10–“Summer Nights”.

1979: The first National March on Washington For Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights took place, drawing an estimated 125,000 participants. The march itself was largely galvanized by the assassination of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician to hold office in California. Speakers at the event included Allen Ginsberg, Audre Lorde and Harry Britt.

Prince released the album “Controversy”.

1982 – Scott Thorson (born January 23, 1959) files a $113 million palimony suit against Liberace  (May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987).  This was the first same-sex palimony case filed in U.S. history. The case later settles. At the height of his fame, from the 1950s to the 1970s, Liberace was the highest-paid entertainer in the world, He embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage, acquiring the sobriquet “Mr. Showmanship”. When Thorson was 18, Liberace hired him to act as his personal friend and companion, a position that allegedly included a five-year romantic relationship with lavish gifts, travel, and Liberace’s promises that he would adopt and care for Thorson. Liberace claimed that he had “more mink coats and diamonds than Elizabeth Taylor.

“In 1986, Thorson and Liberace agreed to settle out of court for $95,000. Liberace died of cytomegalovirus pneumonia as a result of AIDS on February 4, 1987, at his home in Palm Springs, California. The 2013 film Behind the Candelabra is their story. Thorson was played by Matt Damon opposite Michael Douglas as Liberace.

1987 – The U.S. Congress votes in favor of banning federal funding for AIDS education organizations that “promote homosexuality.”

1987,

Mexico –The first conference of Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Lesbians is held

The United States Congress voted to approve Senator Jesse Helms’ amendment to the AIDS appropriation bill. The legislation effectively banned federal funding for “AIDS education materials that ‘promote or encourage, directly or indirectly, homosexual activities.'”

1989

Tracy Chapman scored a #1 album in the U.K. with Crossroads.

1990 – Bisexual Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990)  dies of a heart attack at age seventy-two. He was an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the US to receive worldwide acclaim. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was “one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history.” His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world’s leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan, Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, On the Waterfront, his Mass, and a range of other compositions, including three symphonies and many shorter chamber and solo works.

1999: David Knight, the son of anti-gay California Senator Pete Knight, wrote a scathing op-ed in The Los Angeles Times that denounced his father’s stance on gay rights. He specifically attacked his father’s initiative to ban same-sex marriage in California, reportedly calling the measure “uncaring and uninformed.”  He questioned his father’s defense of family values because his father rejected him when he came out.

2006 – Gerry Studds (May 12, 1937 – October 14, 2006) dies in Boston at age 69, several days after suffering a pulmonary embolism. Studds was the first openly gay member of Congress, coming out in 1983.

2009, Uganda – The Anti-Homosexuality Act bill is submitted to Parliament, calling for the death penalty of those convicted of homosexuality. After dropping the death penalty to life in prison, the bill passed. The Constitutional Court of Uganda ruled the law invalid in 2014.

Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney from Laramie, Wyoming, make their first court appearance after being arrested for the murder of Matthew Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998). Eventually, they each receive two life sentences for killing Shepard. Matthew was an American student at the University of Wyoming who was beaten, tortured, and left to die near Laramie on the night of October 6, 1998. Six days later, he died from severe head injuries at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado.

1999

Eurythmics, George Michael, David Bowie, Robbie Williams and Bono all appeared at ‘Netaid’ an event to raise money for global poverty. The concerts in London, New York and Geneva were all broadcast live on the internet.

 Lesbian politician Ulrike Lunacek (born 26 May 1957) becomes the first openly gay member of Austrian Parliament, serving with the Austrian Green party. She is an Austrian politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Austria. She is Vice President of the European Parliament, Member of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament since 2009 and head of delegation of the Austrian Greens in the European Parliament. Lunacek is Kosovo-Rapporteur and co-president of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Substitute in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affair. In 2013, Lunacek advocated for a non-binding resolution on “Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights”.[11]that called for “age-appropriate and gender-sensitive sexuality and relationship education … for all children and adolescents” and referenced a document co-authored by the WHO in which some sexuality information is deemed appropriate from age 4. After some controversy, the European Parliament instead passed a modified version which declared sexual education a competence of the member states.

Post 9/11 – From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2002 –  Lesbian serial killer Aileen Wournos (February 29, 1956 – October 9, 2002) is executed in Florida. She was an American serial killer who murdered seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990 by shooting them at point-blank range. Wuornos claimed that her victims had either raped or attempted to rape her while she was working as a sex worker, and that all of the homicides were committed in self-defense. She was convicted and sentenced to death for six of the murders and was executed by lethal injection on October 9, 2002.

2003

For the first time in Billboard magazine’s history, all of the Top 10 singles on the Hot 100 chart were by African-American artists.

2007 – A Shot of Love with Tila Tequila, a reality dating show about a bisexual women dating both male and female contestants, premiers.

2008 – Stephan Thorne of the San Francisco Police Department is promoted to Lieutenant, making him the highest-ranking transgender law enforcement official in the country.

2011 – California Governor Jerry Brown announces the signing of the Gender Nondiscrimination Act (AB 887) and the Vital Statistics Modernization Act (AB 443). AB 887 makes illegal discrimination based on gender identity or expression in employment, education, housing, and other public settings and AB 443 allows transgender people to obtain a court order to protect their gender.

2011, Poland – The first transgender member of Parliament in Europe, Anna Grodzka (born 16 March 1954), is elected. She is a Polish politician. Grodzka, a trans woman, was elected to the Sejm in the 2011 Polish parliamentary elections as a candidate for the left-liberal Palikot’s Movement, and was the first openly transgender Member of Parliament in Poland. In June 2014, Anna Grodzka joined Poland’s Green Party.

1791: France adopted The French Penal Code of 1791, marking it as the first Western European country to decriminalize same-sex acts. (h/t Quist)

1851 – Charity Bryant (May 22, 1777– October 6, 1851) dies and is interred with her lover of 44 years, Sylvia Drake, in Weybridge Hill Cemetery, Addison County, Vermont. This couple is most strongly documented in historian Rachel Hope Cleves‘ 2014 book Charity and Sylvia: A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America. Charity was an American business owner and writer. She was a diarist and wrote acrostic poetry. Because there is extensive documentation for the shared lives of Bryant and her partner, Sylvia Drake, their diaries, letters and business papers have become an important part of the archive in documenting the history of same-sex couples.

October 6, 1889

The Moulin Rouge in Paris opened its doors to the public for the first time. The cabaret is best known as the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance.

1928 – The New York Timesreported that George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells had protested the seizure of the lesbian novel by Radfclyffe Hall, The Well of Loneliness, by English customs agents. The novel had been published in France and was being imported into England.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1963 –Judy Garland sings with Barbra Streisand on Judy’s variety show. It is their one and only performance together. Neither are lesbian but both are gay icons.

1968: A group of 12 people congregated for the first meeting of the Metropolitan Community Church in Huntington Park, California. Founded by Rev. Troy Perry, who held the first meeting in his living room, the religious organization centralizes its ministry efforts around the LGBT community.

October 6, 1972

During sessions at RCA Studios, New York City, David Bowie recorded ‘The Jean Genie’, which became the lead single from his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. The track spent 13 weeks in the UK charts, peaking at No.2, making it Bowie’s biggest hit to date. The line “He’s so simple minded, he can’t drive his module” would later give the band Simple Minds their name.

1972 – Antonio Molina (c. 1939–1991)and William “Billie” Ert (c. 1942–1976)marry in Houston. Ert, a drag queen, and Molina, a shipping clerk, received the license through having Ert dress in drag; the county clerk’s office did not ask for their genders and issued them a marriage license, which they used to marry one day later. At that time, homosexuality was illegal in Texas. Although it was later declared null and void by the Texas Attorney General after a long legal battle, the union made international headlines and became a media sensation. The failed lawsuit sparked Texas legislation that specifically defined marriage as between a man and a woman, which it had not yet done, and was seen as a large setback for LGBT rights in the United States. After the wedding, Ert was fired from his job as a wig salesman, but continued to perform full-time as Mr. Vikki Carr in local nightclubs. The media storm prompted the real Vikki Carr to meet Ert and Molina on CBS in Houston in November 1972, with Ert in drag.

October 6, 1973

Cher started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Half-Breed’, the singers second US No.1. The single didn’t chart in the UK.

1973, Canada – In Quebec City the first pan-Canadian conference of gay organizations is hosted by Centre humanitaire d’aide de libération

1989 – Just two years after its first public showing, the AIDS Quiltreturns to Washington, D.C. with 10,848 panels. At its premiere it had only 1,920 panels.

1989, Mexico – The Permanent Revolution Circle ZYANYA of Lesbian Feminists organizes this first three-day forum at the School of Economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.


1989 – In reaction to a small, peaceful protest against federal neglect of people with AIDS, 200 San Francisco police officers rioted in the Castro neighborhood, beating protesters and passersby, sweeping seven city blocks of all pedestrians, and placing thousands in homes and business under house arrest for the duration.

George Michael’s masterpiece Listen Without Prejudice moved from 22 to 5.

1997 – Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain is published in this week’s issue of The New Yorker. The story, later turned into a hit movie, depicts the complex romantic and sexual relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1981. In 2007, the composer Charles Wuorinen approached Proulx with the idea of turning her short story “Brokeback Mountain” into an opera. The opera of the same name with a libretto by Proulx herself premiered January 28, 2014 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, to mixed reviews.

1997 – The US Supreme Court refused to hear a case filed by Sandy Nelson, a reporter who was demoted because she refused to stop her off-duty campaigning in support of a gay rights initiative in Washington. The Washington Supreme Court had ruled that a law barring discrimination in employment for political views did not apply to newspapers.

1998: Matthew Shepard was tragically attacked, pistol whipped, tied to a fence and left to die. He would later succumb to his injuries in a Ft. Collins, Colorado hospital. He would die of his injuries at a hospital in Ft Collins, Colorado on Oct. 12th. Perpetrators Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were arrested shortly after the attack and charged with first degree murder following Shepard’s death. Significant media coverage was given to the killing and what role Shepard’s sexual orientation might have played as a motive in the commission of the crime. The prosecutor argued that McKinney’s murder of Shepard was premeditated and driven by greed. McKinney’s defense counsel countered that he had only intended to rob Shepard, but had killed him in a rage when Shepard made a sexual advance towards him. McKinney’s girlfriend told police that he had been motivated by anti-gay sentiment, but later recanted her statement, saying that she had lied because she thought it would help him. Both McKinney and Henderson were convicted of the murder and each sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.

1998 – The Ford Foundation gave a $100,000 grant to the United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches for its programs targeting at-risk gay and lesbian youth.

1999 – Donna Brazile (born December 15, 1959), an out lesbian, becomes Al Gore’s campaign manager. She is an American author and political analyst. She is a member of the Democratic Party, briefly serving as the interim chairperson for the Democratic National Committee in spring 2011, and assumed that role again in July 2016, until February 2017. She was the first African American to direct a major presidential campaign, acting as campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000. She has also worked on several presidential campaigns for Democratic candidates, including Jesse Jackson and Walter Mondale–Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, and for Dick Gephardt in the 1988 Democratic primary. In 1999, The New York Times Magazine described Brazile as an LGBT activist who served on the board of the Millennium March on Washington. The magazine said she is “highly protective of her privacy” and called her “openly ambiguous” about her sexual orientation. Brazile is described as “openly lesbian” in the 2002 book Gay and Lesbian Americans and Political Participation: A Reference Handbook.

1867, Germany – George Cecil Ives (1 October 1867 – 4 June 1950) is born. He was a German-English poet, writer, penal reformer and early homosexual law reform campaigner. He founded the Order of Chaerona, an underground society for gays and lesbians was formed as a way for members of sexual minorities to communicate and support one another. Ives stressed that the Order was to be an ascetic movement, not to be used as a forum for men to meet men for sex although he accepted a degree of ‘passionate sensuality’ could take place. He also believed that love and sex between men was a way to undermine the rigid class system as a true form of democracy.The society is named after the location of the battle where the Sacred Band of Thebes was finally annihilated in 338 BC. In 1914, Ives, together with Edward Carpenter, Magnus Hirschfeld, Laurence Housman and others, founded the British Society for the Study of Sex Psychology. At his death in 1950, George Ives left a large archive covering his life and work between 1874 and 1949. The papers were bought in 1977 by the Harry Ransom Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

1936, Spain – Francisco Franco is proclaimed Generalissimo and Head of State. His dictatorship lasts 40 years during which thousands of homosexuals are jailed, put in camps, or locked up in mental institutions for breaking the Vagrancy Act.

1950s The Decade the public learned heterosexual women wanted sex

1953, Germany – Klaus Wowereit (born 1 October 1953) is a German politician, member of the SPD(Social Democratic Party), and was the Governing Mayor of Berlin from October 2001 to  December 2014. He served as President of the Bundesrat (the fourth highest office in Germany) in 2001-02. His SPD-led coalition was re-elected in the 2006 elections.He was also sometimes mentioned as a possible SPD candidate for the Chancellorship of Germany (Kanzlerkandidatur) in the next German federal election, but that never materialized. Wowereit’s civil partner, Jörn Kubicki, is a neurosurgeon. They have been in a relationship since 1993.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

October 1, 1962

Brian Epstein signs his management contract with The Beatles. John Lennon and Ringo Starr signed for themselves and Harold Harrison and James McCartney do so on behalf of their underage sons. The agreement gave Epstein a 25% cut of the group’s earnings provided that they made more than $400 each per week.

A new talent on the scene, Barbra Streisand, signed a recording contract with Columbia Records.  Although it was for a modest sum, Streisand had creative control of her music.

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

1971 – Connecticut becomes the second state to abolish its laws prohibiting homosexual acts by consenting adults. Donna Burkett and Manonia Evans, a lesbian couple, attempted to apply for a marriage license at the Office of the Milwaukee County Clerk in Wisconsin, only to have their application denied by County Clerk Thomas Zablocki. The refusal sparked a historic lawsuit, Burkett vs. Zablocki, in which they claimed the denial of a marriage license deprived them of Constitutional due process and equal protection. Though the case was eventually dismissed, it was one of the first prominent battles in the war for same-sex marriage in America, a war LGBT people are still fighting today.

1971 – African Americans Donna Burkett, 25, and Manonia Evans, 21, apply for a marriage license in Wisconsin but the application is refused by the clerk. The two women file a lawsuit but the suit is dismissed. They have a wedding without a license on December 25, 1971.

October 1, 1976

David Bowie begins a three year hiatus from music by moving to West Berlin in an attempt to resolve some personal problems.

1977

Elton John became the first musician to be honoured in New York City’s Madison Square Hall Of Fame and  holds the all-time record with 62 performances at the Garden.

1981 – The U.S. House of Representatives fails to pass a bill that would decriminalize homosexual acts between consenting adults in the District of Columbia.

1981 – The first issue of “The Newsletter” for lesbian and bisexual women is published in North Carolina.

1982 – Glenn Burke, (November 16, 1952 – May 30, 1995) comes out in an interview in Inside Sports. He was a Major League Baseball (MLB) player for the Los Angeles Dodgersand the Oakland Athletics from 1976 to 1979. Burke was the first and only MLB player to come outas gayto teammates and team owners during his professional career and the first to publicly acknowledge it. He died from AIDS-related causes in 1995.

1983

 Spandau Ballet moved from 13-7 with their only Top 10 song “True”, on the usa charts

1986 – The Roman Catholic Church issues Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger’s “Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons.” In the document, Ratzinger clarifies the Church’s condemnation of the “homosexual inclination” as a “tendency toward an intrinsic moral evil” and an “objective disorder,” and criticizes Catholics who have been guilty of “an overly benign interpretation of the homosexual condition.”

1987 – The US Senate votes 75-23 to allow the former hospital at Presidio Army base to be used for a regional AIDS treatment facility in order to meet the projected needs of San Francisco. President Reagan said if the bill were passed by the House of Representatives, he would veto it.

1987 – ACT-UP disrupts evangelist Pat Robertson’s formal announcement of his candidacy for the Republican nomination for US President.

1989, Denmark – Axil (3 April 1915 – 29 October 2011) and Eigil Axgil (24 April 1922 – 22 September 1995) became the first gay couple to be legally married in Copenhagen. They had been together for 40 years, 32 of which were under a common last name. Ten other couples were married the same day. In 1989, Denmark became the first nation in the world to recognize registered partnerships for same-sex couples, nearly equal to (opposite-sex) marriage. (They do not include rights to adoption, artificial insemination, or religious wedding ceremonies in state Lutheran Churches.) On 1 October 1989 the Axgils and 10 other Danish couples were married by Tom Ahlberg, the deputy mayor of Copenhagen, in the city hall, accompanied by worldwide media attention. In 2013, Axel Axgil was named by Equality Forum as one of their 31 Icons of the LGBT History Month.

1991 – U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy (born October 1, 1991) is born. He is an openly gay American freestyle skier.

1991 – Abby Stein (born October 1, 1991) is an Americantransgenderactivist,author, blogger,model, and speaker. She is the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community, and is a direct descendant of Hasidic Judaism’s founder the Baal Shem Tov. In 2015, she founded the first support group nationwide for trans people of OrthodoxJewish background. Stein is also the first woman, and the first openly transgender woman, to have been ordained by an Orthodox institution, having received her rabbinical degree in 2011, before coming out as transgender.She has not worked as a rabbi since at least 2016.

1993, Canada – An Ottawa court ordered the Canadian government to grant a gay federal worker – Brian Mossop – spousal and bereavement benefits equal to those heterosexual employees receive.

1993 – National Public Radio in the U.S. announced it would offer domestic partner medical and dental benefits to employees in same-sex relationships. The policy also included unmarried heterosexual couples.

1994 – Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, creates LGBT history month. He gathers other teachers and community leaders who select October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month.

1994: A coalition of education-based organizations came together in the mid-1990s in order to officially identify October as “LGBT History Month,” a period of celebration and remembrance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identifying individuals. It serves as a designated period of time in which we highlight the journey and progression of LGBT rights from the days of the Stonewall Rebellion through the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and beyond.

1996, Argentina – Buenos Aires police begin a campaign of raids on gay and lesbian clubs and arrests of cross-dressing patrons and transsexuals in an apparent protest against impending gay and lesbian rights measures. 

1999: Marta Alvarez was a lesbian inmate imprisoned in Colombia in the 1990s. She began petitioning for the allowance of same-sex conjugal visits in 1994, arguing that “her rights to personal dignity, integrity, and equality were being infringed upon by the denial to allow her conjugal visits in prison.” The case initially went to trial on October 1, 1999. In a landmark decision for Latin America, the Interamerican Convention on Human Rights ruled that the denial of conjugal visits constituted discrimination based on sexual orientation.

1974 – The National Gay [later: and lesbian] Task Force and other lesbian and gay activists persuade major consumer advertisers to withdraw commercials from a Marcus Welby, MD, episode about a high school boy who is raped by a male teacher. Their achievement is hailed as the first successful protest against alleged defamation of gay men on American Television.

1975

1979

Elton John collapsed onstage at the Universal Amphitheater in Hollywood, California due to exhaustion brought on by the flu.  After 10 minutes, John returned and finished the show.

1994, Canada – Real Menard (born May 13, 1962), a Montreal representative of the Bloc Quebecois, becomes the second MP to come out when he tells reporters that he is “speaking for the community” to which he belongs when he protests the televised statements of another member of Parliament, Roseanne Skoke of Nova Scotia, among which is the claim that “this [gay and lesbian] love, this compassion, based on an inhuman act, defiles humanity, destroys family … and is annihilating mankind.”

1999: The European Court for Human Rights rules that the United Kingdom’s ban on gay military personnel is a breach of human rights, although the court does not have the power to unilaterally lift the ban.

Post 9/11 – From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2004: California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signs “SB 1193,” a bill to provide a $10,000 death benefit to the surviving spouse or designated beneficiary of a member of on of the state military reserves (California National Guard, State Military Reserve, or Naval militia). The bill, retroactive to March 1, 2003 allows LGBT partners of military personnel be listed as “designated beneficiary.”

2008 – Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read. Many GLBT-themed books have been among those banned over the years. According to the American Library Association, “For a second consecutive year, Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell’s award-winning ‘And Tango Makes Three,’ a children’s book about two male penguins caring for an orphaned egg, tops the list of American Library Association’s (ALA) 10 Most Challenged Books of 2007.” The 9th most challenged book in the U.S. last year was “It’s Perfectly Normal” by Robie Harris. It was challenged because it is about sex education and is sexually explicit.

2010

Elton John‘s mother announced that she would be auctioning off some of her son’s memorabilia when she moved into a smaller house. Among the items were tour jackets and more than 100 Gold and Platinum discs.

2013 – New Jersey Superior Court rules that same-sex couples be allowed to marry.

Before the 1900s to The Suffragettes

365 BC – Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia (356 BC—323 BC) is born. He was King of Macedonia and conqueror of the Persian Empire. He is considered one of the greatest military geniuses of all time. Alexander spent his childhood watching his father transform Macedonia into a great military power, winning victory after victory on the battlefields throughout the Balkans. Historians believe Alexander was gay.

1890, Germany – Dr. Erwin Gohrbandt studied medicine at the Military Medical Academy and graduated in 1917 then worked at the Charité Universitätsmediz inBerlin. He did the initial operations on the first two transsexuals in modern surgery. In Berlin in 1931, Dora R, born as Rudolph R, became the first known transgender woman to undergo vaginoplasty. According to Dr. Felix Abraham, a psychiatrist working at the Institute for Sexual Science where Dora was employed as a domestic servant, her first step to feminization was made by means of castration in 1922. In 1931 a penis amputation was done, then a highly experimental vaginoplasty was performed by Dr. Erwin Gohrbandt who later becomes a decorated surgeon-general in the Luftwaffe.

1917, France – Bisexual American painter Romaine Brooks (May 1, 1874 – December 7, 1970) had a three-year affair with Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein  (September 21,1883 – September 20, 1960), painting portraits of her during that time. One was the “Weeping Venus “which was featured on this day at the opening of Expo Centre Pompidou Metz.

1958 – The New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis is formed by a group of lesbians including Barbara Gittings (July 31, 1932 – February 18, 2007). They meet at the offices of the Mattachine Society of New York. The chapter is the first lesbian organization on the East Coast

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

1971 – John Singer(October 21, 1944 – June 5, 2000), later known as Faygele ben Miriam, and fellow activist Paul Barwick(born 1946) apply for a marriage license in Seattle. Singer was a U.S. activist for LGBT rights, and a gay marriage pioneer, filing one of the first gay marriage lawsuits in American history after being denied a marriage license at the King County Administration Building in Seattle, Washington in 1971. The case, Singer v. Hara, was the best-known gay marriage case in the state of Washington until Andersen v. King County in 2006. Barwick served three years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, working as a police officer. He currently lives in San Francisco, California, his residence for the last 30 years

1973 – In their so-called “battle of the sexes,” tennis star Billie Jean King (born November 22, 1943) defeats Bobby Riggs in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 at the Houston Astrodome. 

The mixed gender tennis match between top tennis player Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King was held in Houston, Texas after Riggs won another mixed gender match against Margaret Court earlier in the year. The matches were prompted by Riggs’ comments that even at an age of 55, he could beat any female tennis player. King beat Riggs and took home the $100,000 prize money. The match was and still is one of the most viewed tennis matches on television – it was watched by about 90 million people around the world.

1973

Elton John, Carole King, Jackson Browne and Neil Young & Crazy Horse opened the Roxy in style in Los Angeles.

September 20, 1975

Neil Sedaka and Elton John moved from 66 to 32 with “Bad Blood”.

‘Fame’ gave David Bowie his first No.1 in the US. The song was co-written with John Lennon. Lennon’s voice is heard towards the ending of the song repeating the words: “Fame, Fame, Fame” from a fast track, through a regular track, to a slow track, before Bowie finished the lyrics.

September 20, 1976

The Game by Queen took over on the U.S. Album chart  and Olivia Newton-John’s “Xanadu” soundtrack was at 8

1980 – Bruce Mailman (1939-June 9, 1994) opens the Saint disco in New York City, heralding what many gay New Yorkers remember as the zenith of the clone era. He was an East Village entrepreneur, Off-Broadway theatre-owner and founder of The Saint and New St. Marks Baths. In 1979, he bought the building that would become the New Saint Marks Baths at 6 St. Marks Place. He sought to provide a cleaner environment for a gay bathhouse than had been the case prior. He claimed it was the largest bathhouse in the world.In 1981 he bought the neighboring 8 St. Marks with hopes of doubling the size. In 1980 he bought the Fillmore East and converted it to The Saint nightclub. Both institutions ran into trouble with the advent of the AIDS crisis. Mailman died of AIDS complications in 1994.

1986

The Soundtrack to “Top Gun” (Blogger Nina Deems this to be a very gay movie) took over the #1 position on the Album chart from Madonna’s True Blue.

1996 – President Clinton announced his signing of a bill outlawing same-sex marriages, but said it should not be used as an excuse for discrimination, violence or intimidation against gays and lesbians. 

1996, Saudi Arabia – Twenty-four Filipino workers receive the first 50 lashes of their 200-lash sentence for alleged “homosexual behavior.” Despite protests from Amnesty International, the government goes ahead with the sentence and later deports the workers.

1997

Elton John started a six week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Something About The Way You Look Tonight’, and ‘Candle In The Wind 97.’ A re-write of his 1974 hit about Marilyn Monroe. This version was raising funds for the Diana, Princess of Wales charity, following her death in Paris. It went on to become the biggest selling single in the world ever.

  • 2001 American President, George W. Bush Declares War on TerrorThe global military campaign against terrorism was first declared in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks in the United States. The phrase was used by President Bush in a speech given to the United States Congress.

2010, Peru – LGBT activist Alberto Osorio was found murdered in his apartment in Lima. Eight similar crimes against LGBT individuals in Peru occurred in the same year.

2011 – The military’s Don’t’ Ask Don’t Tell policy is officially repealed. It had been in effect since 1993.

2013 –Cassidy Lynn Campbell, 16, becomes the first transgender public-school homecoming queen in the U.S., at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, CA.

2016

Elton John admitted during an appearance on the UK TV show Good Morning Britain that he was considering retiring from recording. He told the audience, “My records don’t sell anymore because people have enough Elton John records in their collection. I love making them, but it’s someone else’s turn now.”

1306, France – Philip IV orders the arrest of two Knights Templar because they exchanged an obscene kiss” that pretty much covered their entire bodies.

The Friends of Dorothy Era and The Hayes Code

1934 – Katherine “Kate” Murray Millett (Sept. 14, 1934- September 5, 2017) is born. Kate was in her mid-30s and a generally unknown sculptor when her doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, “Sexual Politics,” was published by Doubleday and Co. Her core premise was that the relationship between the sexes is political, with the definition of politics including, as she once said, “arrangements whereby one group of persons is controlled by another.” After teaching briefly at the University of North Carolina, she pursued her art career in Japan and then New York, where she took a job at Barnard College teaching English literature. In 1965 she married the Japanese sculptor Fumio Yoshimura, but she rejected many traditional ideas of marriage and eventually came out as a lesbian. Her autobiographical work Flying, published in 1974, told of the dizzying fame “Sexual Politics” had brought and her reaction to it. Sita, in 1977, dealt with her sexuality. She is survived by her spouse Sophie Keir.

1950s The Decade the public learned heterosexual women wanted sex

1953 – Alfred Kinsey’s Sexual Behavior in the Human Female goes on sale reporting that “2 to 6% of females, aged 20-35, were more or less exclusively homosexual in experience/response.”

September 14, 1955

At Specialty Records in Los Angeles, Little Richard records his debut album, “Here’s Little Richard”. It would prove to be his highest charting LP in America, reaching #13. The collection contained two of his biggest hits, “Long Tall Sally”, which reached #6 in the US and “Jenny, Jenny”, which reached #10. Little Richard entered a New Orleans recording studio to begin two days of recording. Things were not going well and during a break, Richard and his producer; Bumps Blackwell went to the Dew Drop Inn for lunch. Richard started playing the piano in the bar like crazy, singing a loud and lewd version of ‘Tutti Frutti.’ With only fifteen minutes left in the session, Richard recorded the song and coined the phrase, ‘a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom.’

1970 – In New York City, Gay Activists Alliance stages the first of an orchestrated campaign of “zaps” in protest of continuing police harassment. They heckle Mayor John Lindsay as he enters the Metropolitan Opera House for its opening night gala.

1979, Canada – In Smeaton, Saskatchewan an education arbitration board orders teacher Don Jones reinstated to job from which he was fired for being gay.

The first MTV Video Music Awards show was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd. Herbie Hancock was the night’s biggest winner with five awards, followed by Michael Jackson who won three.

David Bowie won Video of the year for ‘China Girl’ at the first MTV Video awards. The song co-written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop during their years in Berlin, first appeared on Pop’s album The Idiot released in 1977.

Madonna performed “Like A Virgin” while wearing a white wedding gown at the first ever MTV Video Music Awards.

1986 – Leslie Blanchard dies from AIDS in the arms of his partner of ten year, Miguel Braschi, in New York. Braschi’s name is not on the lease of their apartment so he is not protected by rent control. In 1989 the New York Court of Appeals case Braschi v Stahl Associates Co that decided that the surviving partner of a same-sex relationship counted as “family” under New York law and was thus able to continue living in a rent controlled apartment belonging to the deceased partner. In a subsequent appeal, the court found that a “more realistic, and certainly equally valid, view of a family includes two adult lifetime partners whose relationship is long term and characterized by an emotional and financial commitment and interdependence”. Application of this standard allowed Braschi to be considered a family member and prevented his eviction from the apartment. The decision represents the first time a court in the United States granted any kind of legal recognition to a same-sex couple

1989: Seven ACT UP members infiltrate the Stock Exchange and chain themselves to the VIP balcony. Above the trading floor a banner unfurls: SELL WELLCOME. Four days later, the company lowers the price of AZT, to $6,400 per year.

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1999: Iowa governor Tom Vilsack issues an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in the public sector.

Post 9/11 – From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2010, Israel – Israel’s Supreme Court, accepting the appeal of Jerusalem Open House, an LGBT organization, forces Jerusalem City Hall to fund the LGBT Pride Parade.

George Michael was sentenced to eight weeks in jail after he plead guilty to driving under the influence and drug possession. The incident occurred on July 4 when he crashed his car into a store.

1931 – Lili Elbe (28 December 1882 – 13 September 1931), possible intersex and the recipient of the first sex-reassignment surgery, dies. She married Gerda Gottlieb in 1904 in Denmark, a marriage that the King of Denmark invalidated in 1930 in Germany. Lili dies of post-surgical complications as her body rejects her new uterus. The film The Danish Girl is based on her story. In 1932, Man Into Woman, the Story of Lili Elbe’s Life is published.

September 13, 1955

Little Richard entered J&M Studios in New Orleans for a two day recording session. Things were not going well and during a break, Richard and his producer, Bumps Blackwell, went to the Dew Drop Inn. With few people there and an old upright piano, Richard started playing like crazy, singing loud, lewd and hamming it up. Blackwell was stunned… why couldn’t he record this? They went back to J&M with only fifteen minutes left in the session and “Tutti Fruiti, good booty” became “Tutti Fruiti, aw-rootie”. The song would be Richard’s break-out hit and managed to make it to #17 early the following year, but a cover by Pat Boone over shadowed Richard’s version and went to #12 on the Billboard Pop chart.

1958

Sexuality Ambiguous and continued to be undeclared in 2021: Cliff Richard made his British TV debut on Jack Good’s Oh Boy program, where he performed “Move It”. Before he was allowed to appear on the show, Richard was ordered to remove his Elvis inspired sideburns, which he did.

With the American music scene still reeling from the “payola” scandal, the US Federal Communications act was amended to outlaw payments of cash or gifts in exchange for airplay of records.

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

1975, Canada – A large gay rights march sponsored by Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario calls for reinstatement of John Damien who had been fired as a judge for the Ontario Jockey Club because he was gay. Protestors call for the inclusion of sexual orientation in human rights code.  

1977 – 

Soap premieres on ABC with then unknown Billy Crystal playing Jodie Dallas, one of TV’s first prominent and sympathetic gay characters. His character’s initial plot involved an almost sex change for his in the closet football boyfriend, main plots were being chased by women who could not accept his gayness, confronting a cult, trying to adopt his own daughter, having a lesbian roommate and ending with the character thinking he was an elderly Jewish man instead of the gay character in the pilot. The show was a spoof and included aliens and the afterlife, SOAP concluded on the spin off Benson.

September 13, 1979

ABBA ventured to the other side of the Atlantic for the first time (and only time) in their career, opening up at the Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Geffen Records threw a party to launch Nirvana’s single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. The band ended up being thrown out of their own party after starting a food fight.

1995, Canada –The Celluloid Closet premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. It  is a 1995 American documentary film written and directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. The film is based on Vito Russo‘s book of the same name first published in 1981 and on lecture and film clip presentations he gave in 1972–1982. Russo had researched the history of how motion pictures, especially Hollywood films, had portrayed gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters. The film was given a limited release in select US theatres, including the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, in April 1996, and then shown on HBO.

1996 – The U.S. Congress defeats a bill that would ban employment discrimination against lesbians and gay men: by ONE vote.

1997: The newly crowned Miss America, Kate Shindle, vows to dedicate her term to youth HIV prevention. When schools rein her in, she later tells Poz magazine, “Sometimes I feel like I’m banging my head against the wall.”

Elton John’s single “Candle in the Wind 1997” was released in the U.K., adn became the biggest selling single ever.

Post 9/11 – From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2001 – On Pat Robertson’s 700 Club, Jerry Falwell WRONGLY says feminists and gays and lesbians were responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

2004, Australia – The Gay and Lesbian Kingdom declares war on the Australian government for its failure to recognize same-sex marriages. They form a micro-nation and, under the Unjust Enrichment law, demand territorial compensation. While there was no military action, it did cement the Kingdom’s assertion that they exist as an independent country. The Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands (also known as The Gay Kingdom of the Coral Sea – for example on postage stamps) was established as a symbolic political protest by a group of gay rights activists based in Australia. Declared in 2004 in response to the Australian government’s refusal to recognize same-sex marriages, it was founded on Australia’s external overseas Territory of the Coral Sea Islands, a group of uninhabited islets east of the Great Barrier Reef. It is an expression of queer nationalism.

2010: 

Chief of the Defense Force of Australia Angus Houston issues an order lifting the ban on transgender personnel.

George Michael was sent to jail for eight weeks after being convicted of driving under the influence of drugs and possessing cannabis in Hampstead, north London last July. He smiled in disbelief as the sentence was passed and he was led away to the cells.

2021

Spong made headlines as the bishop of the Diocese of Newark, where he served for more than two decades and in 1989 ordained the first openly gay male priest in the Episcopal Church. He would later go on to ordain about three dozen LBGTQ clergy in the diocese by the time he retired, Religion News Service reported in 2013.

He also championed women clergy, making sure that any church in his diocese that was searching for a new priest interviewed at least one woman candidate, said Bishop Bonnie Perry of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.

That put him lightyears ahead of leaders in the Episcopal Church, said Perry.
