02-11-1962 Tammy Baldwin – Born in Madison, Wisconsin. She is an American politician and has always been out publicly as a lesbian. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin’s 2nd district. In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, the first woman to represent Wisconsin, and the first out gay U.S. Senator in history. In 1993, she said that she was disappointed by President Clinton’s compromise on LGBT rights in supporting the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. In early 1994, she proposed legalizing same-sex marriage in Wisconsin. On October 20, 2013, Baldwin was one of sixteen female Democratic senators to sign a letter endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in the 2016 Presidential Election.

On February 5, 2020, regarding the impeachment of Trump, she stated, “I only have one of 100 votes in the U.S. Senate and I am afraid that the majority is putting this president above the law by not convicting him of these impeachable offenses. But let’s be clear, this is not an exoneration of President Trump, it is a failure to show moral courage and hold this president accountable.”

1965: At the San Francisco trial of the four people arrested at the Council on Religion and the Homosexual’s New Year’s Ball, the judge orders the jury to find the defendants not guilty. The decision is widely seen as a turning point in the homophile movement’s fight for gay and lesbian civil rights.

1967: In a follow-up action to Los Angeles’ Black Cat demonstration on New Year’s Eve, around 40 picketers demonstrate in front of the Black Cat in coordination with hippies and other counterculture groups who had been targeted by police for harassment and violence.

were exchanged in the LGBT bar, the Black Cat, undercover cops started arresting people without identifying themselves. Fourteen people were dragged to waiting patrol cars. The cops then raided the New Faces bar, where other LGBT people were arrested. The raids sparked anger and fear in the gay community. At the time, it was the bars that were the only relatively safe place for gay people to gather. Six of the men arrested for kissing at the Black Cat were convicted of lewd conduct and required to register as sex offenders. Lawyer Herbert Selwyn

argued for the first time on the basis of equal protection under the law. The US Supreme Court declined to hear the case. Two LGBT organizations came together — Personal Rights in Defense and Education (PRIDE) and The Southern California Council on Religion and Homophile (SCCRH) to stage an unprecedented protest. A legal defense fund was set up and the media was contacted. On February 11, 1967, in response to the harassment and unprovoked police attack, nearly 600 people gathered in a peaceful demonstration in front of the Black Cat.

There was some television coverage of the protest and the only print coverage was by the L.A. Free Press. In 2008, the Black Cat was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #939 for its early and significant role in the LGBT civil rights movement. It’s the first building in Los Angeles to be landmarked solely for its LGBT history. The Black Cat is located at 3909 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, California.

David Bowie released ‘Sound and Vision’ as a single, which was taken from his latest album Low. ‘Sound and Vision’ was used by the BBC in the UK on trailers at the time, providing considerable exposure, much needed as Bowie opted to do nothing to promote the single himself, and helped the song to No.3 on the UK charts.

On December 15, 2008, Fox News reported that O’Day attended a party accompanied with her girlfriend/lover, according to an anonymous friend in attendance. When questioned by UsMagazine.com regarding the gay rumors, O’Day did not confirm nor deny the speculation about her sexuality, and once again stated that she could not say “one way or another” what her sexual orientation is at this point in her life. In 2009, while on the show Chelsea Lately, when asked about being bisexual, she replied, “Generally, I don’t like to label myself…I want to find someone I’m passionate about, and I don’t want to limit myself to one segment of the population.” She is a gay rights advocate and chose the “Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network” (GLSEN) as her charity for Celebrity Apprentice.

72-year-old Barry Manilow was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after suffering what was described as “complications from emergency oral surgery” that he had undergone earlier in the week. 1970 – Sometime in the 1940s a sign appeared over the popular Los Angeles bar at Barney’s Beanery that read “FAGOTS – STAY OUT.” The message so offended the locals that Life magazine did an article on opposition to the sign in 1964, which included a photograph of the owner steadfastly holding on to it. The owner died in 1968, and efforts continued to have the sign removed. The Gay Liberation Front organized a zap of the restaurant on February 7, 1970 to push for its removal. The sign disappeared that day. The sign was put up and taken down several times over the next 14 years, but the practice ended in December, 1984, days after the city voted itself into existence. 1914 – Author William S. Burroughs (February 5, 1914 – August 2, 1997) was born in St Louis. Burroughs was a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author whose influence is considered to have affected a range of popular culture as well as literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. He shunned the wealth of his business machine-making family to work a number of jobs but his most famous accomplishment was as a writer. His addiction to drugs led to his first novel Junkie; the highlight was his 1959 hit Naked Lunch, a highly controversial work that was the subject of a court case after it was challenged as being in violation of the U.S. sodomy laws. The 25th anniversary edition of Queer published in 2010, edited by Oliver Harris, called into question Burroughs’s claim, and clarified the importance for Queer of Burroughs’s traumatic relationship with the boyfriend fictionalized in the story as Eugene Allerton.

background leading up to the opening of Maud’s; how lesbians discovered their sexual orientation and had few places to socialize; the foundation of the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955; the need for alternatives to gay men’s bars; the police raids in the 1950s and much more. The film interviews Ricky Stretcher, the owner of Maud’s and how she designed and operated the bar. Insights expressed by the patrons and the bartenders of the bar show what it was like to be a lesbian in the 1940s and 1950s. The film preserves an era in history when bars were the only social gathering place in the lesbian community.

01-31-1900 – 07-23-1982 Betty Parsons (Born Betty Bierne Pierson) – Born in New York City, New York. She was an American artist, art dealer, and collector, known for her early promotion of Abstract Expressionism. In 1920, she married Schuyler Livingston Parson, a rich, alcoholic gay man.

After the couple divorced in 1923, Betty Parsons, as she was called for the rest of her life, moved to Paris. For the eight or ten years that she lived in France, she had an affair with the English painter Adge Baker. The two women shared a house together for six years on Rue Boulard in Montparnasse. They would remain friends for the rest of her life. Parsons moved back to the U.S. in 1933. During the McCarthy years she went back into the closet, but supported gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists during this time of oppression. From the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s, she was involved with actress and painter, Strelsa van Scriver. In 1946, she opened the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City and exhibited for the first time publicly Abstract Expressionist. The gallery became one of the most prestigious of the mid-twentieth century. It closed in 1981, a year before Parson’s death.

1902 – American actress Tallulah Bankhead (January 31, 1902 – December 12, 1968) was born in Huntsville, Alabama. She was an American actress of the stage and screen. Bankhead was known for her husky voice, outrageous personality, and devastating wit. Originating some of the 20th century theater’s preeminent roles in comedy and melodrama, she gained acclaim as an actress on both sides of the Atlantic. Bankhead became an icon of the tempestuous, flamboyant actress, and her unique voice and mannerisms are often subject to imitation and parody. In her personal life, Bankhead struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and was infamous for her uninhibited sex life. Rumors about Bankhead’s sex life have lingered for years, and she was linked romantically with many notable female personalities of the day, including Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Cornell, Eva Le Gallienne, Hope Williams, Beatrice Lillie, and Alla Nazimova, as well as writer Mercedes de Acosta and singer Billie Holiday. Actress Patsy Kelly confirmed she had a sexual relationship with Bankhead when she worked for her as a personal assistant. Bankhead never publicly described herself as being bisexual. She did, however, describe herself as “ambisextrous”.

01-31-1905 – 07-13-1960 Anna Blaman – Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was a Dutch writer and poet. Anna Blaman was her pen name. She was born Johanna

Petronella Vrugt. Her novel, A Matter of Life and Death (1954) is her most notable work and was translated into English in 1974. As a high profile figure, who was openly lesbian, she helped open doors for other Dutch lesbians. At the age of 55, she died of a cerebral embolism. The Dutch film, To Play or to Die (1990) was based on one of her stories.

01-31-1908 – 12-16-1992 Erica Brausen – Born in Düsseldorf, Germany. She was an art dealer and established the Hanover Gallery in London in 1946. Brausen supported several influential contemporary artists, including Francis Bacon. As a German national, she

encountered many difficulties and restrictions. A gay artist friend married her which allowed her to work legally. From 1946 until 1973, the Hanover Gallery was among the most influential galleries in Europe. Other artists that the galley represented included Alberto Giacometti, Lucian Freud, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Henry Moore. Brausen was a lesbian and her life partner was Catharina “Toto” Koopman, a one-time Chanel model and film actress. The two met in 1945. Koopman helped Brausen run the Hanover Gallery and the two women lived openly together until Koopman’s death in 1991.

In a slightly convoluted way, state law defines “sexual orientation” as including “gender identity.” Thus, according to the Washington State Human Rights Commission, RCW 49.60 “makes discrimination unlawful on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, sex, sexual orientation, disability, familial status, marital status, and age. Discrimination based on sexual orientation, including gender identity, will be illegal in employment, housing, public accommodations [including schools], credit and lending, and insurance. All employers with eight or more employees, except tribes and religious non-profit institutions, are covered by the law.” It is still perfectly legal in 36 states to discriminate in employment or at school against someone you perceive to be transgender. In thirty of those states it is still legal to discriminate against someone you think is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

George Michael files a writ seeking to dissolve his contract with Sony Records. In June, 1994, a British judge would rule in Sony’s favor, but Michael would refuse to release any more material with Sony. 630 B.C., Lesbos – Sappho is born c. (630 – 570 BC) . The poet wrote beautiful poetry to the women she loved. It is because Sappho and her followers lived on the Isle of Lesbos that women who love women call themselves “lesbian” to this day. Sappho is known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung and accompanied by a lyre, and which is usually about the love and passion of women. Most of Sappho’s poetry is now lost, and what is extant has survived only in fragmentary form, except for one complete poem – the “Ode to Aphrodite”. As well as lyric poetry, ancient commentators claimed that Sappho wrote elegiac and iambic poetry. Lesbian author Willa Cather (December 7, 1873^[2] – April 24, 1947) wrote “Sappho wrote only of one theme, sang it, laughed it, sighed it, wept it, sobbed it. Save for her knowledge of human love she was unlearned, save for her perception of beauty she was blind, save for the fullness of her passions she was empty-handed.”

Gephardt met with them to discuss ways in which the party could assist gay and lesbian candidates through the coming election cycle.

The U.S. Senate passed the “La Cienega” bill. The bill closed a loophole in the 1909 copyright act that put most pre-1978 music copyrights in jeopardy.

1997 – Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) (born March 31, 1940) introduces a bill calling for the extension of health insurance coverage to the domestic partners of US federal employees through the federal employee health program. Frank, a resident of Newton, Massachusetts, is considered the most prominent gay politician in the United States.

1997 – Maryland’s Court of Special Appeals unanimously overturns Circuit Court Judge Lawrence H. Rushworth’s decision prohibiting a divorced gay man from seeing his children in the presence of his partner.

1999, Austria – Lesbian Ulrike Lunacek (born 26 May 1957) is the first openly gay member of Parliament of the National Council of Austria. She is a member of the Austrian Green Party, part of the European Green Party. In 2017, she was the top candidate for the national elections in Austria in 2017. She is co-president of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Substitute in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affair.

2002 – former NFL linebacker Esera Tuaolo (born July 11, 1968) comes out. He is a former American professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for nine years. He played college football at Oregon State University and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He won the Morris Trophy in 1989, which is given to the best defensive lineman in the Pac-10. He was named Pac-10 Conference First Team twice and as a senior he was a finalist for the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy. In 2002, having retired from sports, Tuaolo announced to the public that he is gay, coming out on HBO’s Real Sports. This made him the third former NFL player to come out, after David Kopay (born June 28, 1942) and Roy Simmons (November 8, 1956 – February 20, 2014). Tuaolo, the child of Samoan banana farmers, lives in Minnesota with his life-partner, Mitchell Wherley, and their twins, Mitchell Jr. and Michelle.

1851 – Charity Bryant (May 22, 1777– October 6, 1851) dies and is interred with her lover of 44 years, Sylvia Drake, in Weybridge Hill Cemetery, Addison County, Vermont. This couple is most strongly documented in historian Rachel Hope Cleves‘ 2014 book Charity and Sylvia: A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America. Charity was an American business owner and writer. She was a diarist and wrote acrostic poetry. Because there is extensive documentation for the shared lives of Bryant and her partner, Sylvia Drake, their diaries, letters and business papers have become an important part of the archive in documenting the history of same-sex couples.

During sessions at RCA Studios, New York City, David Bowie recorded ‘The Jean Genie’, which became the lead single from his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. The track spent 13 weeks in the UK charts, peaking at No.2, making it Bowie’s biggest hit to date. The line “He’s so simple minded, he can’t drive his module” would later give the band Simple Minds their name.

1972 – Antonio Molina (c. 1939–1991)and William “Billie” Ert (c. 1942–1976)marry in Houston. Ert, a drag queen, and Molina, a shipping clerk, received the license through having Ert dress in drag; the county clerk’s office did not ask for their genders and issued them a marriage license, which they used to marry one day later. At that time, homosexuality was illegal in Texas. Although it was later declared null and void by the Texas Attorney General after a long legal battle, the union made international headlines and became a media sensation. The failed lawsuit sparked Texas legislation that specifically defined marriage as between a man and a woman, which it had not yet done, and was seen as a large setback for LGBT rights in the United States. After the wedding, Ert was fired from his job as a wig salesman, but continued to perform full-time as Mr. Vikki Carr in local nightclubs. The media storm prompted the real Vikki Carr to meet Ert and Molina on CBS in Houston in November 1972, with Ert in drag.

1989 – In reaction to a small, peaceful protest against federal neglect of people with AIDS, 200 San Francisco police officers rioted in the Castro neighborhood, beating protesters and passersby, sweeping seven city blocks of all pedestrians, and placing thousands in homes and business under house arrest for the duration.

1997 – Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain is published in this week’s issue of The New Yorker. The story, later turned into a hit movie, depicts the complex romantic and sexual relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1981. In 2007, the composer Charles Wuorinen approached Proulx with the idea of turning her short story “Brokeback Mountain” into an opera. The opera of the same name with a libretto by Proulx herself premiered January 28, 2014 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, to mixed reviews.

1997 – The US Supreme Court refused to hear a case filed by Sandy Nelson, a reporter who was demoted because she refused to stop her off-duty campaigning in support of a gay rights initiative in Washington. The Washington Supreme Court had ruled that a law barring discrimination in employment for political views did not apply to newspapers.

1998: Matthew Shepard was tragically attacked, pistol whipped, tied to a fence and left to die. He would later succumb to his injuries in a Ft. Collins, Colorado hospital. He would die of his injuries at a hospital in Ft Collins, Colorado on Oct. 12^th. Perpetrators Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were arrested shortly after the attack and charged with first degree murder following Shepard’s death. Significant media coverage was given to the killing and what role Shepard’s sexual orientation might have played as a motive in the commission of the crime. The prosecutor argued that McKinney’s murder of Shepard was premeditated and driven by greed. McKinney’s defense counsel countered that he had only intended to rob Shepard, but had killed him in a rage when Shepard made a sexual advance towards him. McKinney’s girlfriend told police that he had been motivated by anti-gay sentiment, but later recanted her statement, saying that she had lied because she thought it would help him. Both McKinney and Henderson were convicted of the murder and each sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.

1998 – The Ford Foundation gave a $100,000 grant to the United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches for its programs targeting at-risk gay and lesbian youth.

1999 – Donna Brazile (born December 15, 1959), an out lesbian, becomes Al Gore’s campaign manager. She is an American author and political analyst. She is a member of the Democratic Party, briefly serving as the interim chairperson for the Democratic National Committee in spring 2011, and assumed that role again in July 2016, until February 2017. She was the first African American to direct a major presidential campaign, acting as campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000. She has also worked on several presidential campaigns for Democratic candidates, including Jesse Jackson and Walter Mondale–Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, and for Dick Gephardt in the 1988 Democratic primary. In 1999, The New York Times Magazine described Brazile as an LGBT activist who served on the board of the Millennium March on Washington. The magazine said she is “highly protective of her privacy” and called her “openly ambiguous” about her sexual orientation. Brazile is described as “openly lesbian” in the 2002 book Gay and Lesbian Americans and Political Participation: A Reference Handbook.
