1886 – The term “Boston Marriage,” which describes a long-term cohabiting relationship between two women, is written for the first time. Novelist Henry James uses it in his book The Bostonians. Henry James (15 April 1843 – 28 February 1916) was an American author regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. Born in the United States, James largely relocated to Europe as a young man and eventually settled in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick‘s (May 2, 1950 – April 12, 2009) Epistemology of the Closet made a landmark difference to Jamesian scholarship by arguing that he be read as a homosexual writer whose desire to keep his sexuality a secret shaped his layered style and dramatic artistry.

02-16-1893 – 06-09-1974 Katharine Cornell – Born in Berlin, German Empire to American parents. She was an American stage actress, writer,

theatre owner, and producer. Known as one of the greatest American stage actresses of the 20th century. In 1948 she won a Tony Award for Anthony and Cleopatra, it was the first time any actor, male or female, had won a Tony Award playing a Shakespearean role. She won many other awards, including in 1937, the Chi Omega Sorority’s National Achievement Award that was presented to her by Eleanor Roosevelt at a White House reception. She married Guthrie McClintic (August 6, 1893 – October 29, 1961), a successful theatre director, film director, and producer based in New York, in 1921, but it is generally acknowledged that Cornell was a lesbian, and McClintic was gay, and their union was a lavender marriage.. They formed a production team M.C. & C. Company, which produced all her plays. He directed every play she starred in. She only appeared in one Hollywood film, Stage Door Canteen (1943), in which she played herself. She was a member of the “sewing circles” in New York, and had relationships with Nancy Hamilton (July 27, 1908 – February 18, 1985), Tallulah Bankhead (January 31, 1902 – December 12, 1968), and Mercedes de Acosta (March 1, 1893 – May 9, 1968) , among others.

02-16-1926 — 07-25-2003 John Schlesinger – Born in Hampstead, London, England in a Jewish family. He was an English film and stage director, and actor. His acting career began in the 1950s where he had many supporting roles in British films. In the 1960s, he gave up acting and concentrated on a directing career. Schlesinger won the Academy Award for Best Director for Midnight Cowboy (1969), and was nominated for the same award for Darling (1965)and Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971). Other films he is remembered by are Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), The Day of the Locust (1975), and Marathon Man (9176). Schlesinger was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1970 and as a resident of Palm Springs, California, he had a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars dedicated to him in 2003. On New Year’s Day 2001 he suffered a stroke. On July 24, 2003, he was taken off life support at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He was survived by his partner of over 30 years, photographer Michael Childers.

02-16-1937 Paul Bailey – Place of birth unknown. He was a British writer and critic. He is also the author of several

novels as well as biographies of Cynthia Payne and Quentin Crisp. Bailey has also written for plays for radio and television. In 2001, Three Queer Lives: An Alternative Biography of Naomi Jacob, Fred Barnes and Arthur Marshall was published. In 1990 he wrote a childhood memoir called An Immaculate Mistake. It told of growing up working-class, clever and gay in south London during and after the WWII.

an official “coming out” interview to The Advocate’s Editor in Chief, Judy Wieder, citing his reason for doing it: “It’s like what Nathan Lane told you when he came out in The Advocate. It’s about what happened to Matthew Shepard. By making this simple statement, maybe people will think twice about other gay people they encounter. Hopefully they’ll look at me and say, ‘Well, he’s succeeded and came out and has a pretty good life.” Kmetko now trains celebrities on the art of being interviewed.

Kingdom. He was an English musician. One of the most influential figures in the industrial, experimental minimalist, and neofolk music scenes. Balance died after falling from a two story balcony at his home. He was survived by his partner, the artist Ian Johnstone.

comedic writer and actor. He is best known as a writing and performing member of The State on MTV. Allison came out as gay to the national media at 24 when The State began airing in 1994. Allison has taught comedy and storytelling classes at New York University, the People’s Improv Theatre in New York City, and the Philly Improv Theater in Philadelphia.

John Tartaglia – Born in Maple Shade Township, New Jersey. He is an American puppeteer, actor, singer, and dancer. At the age of 16, he joined Sesame Street’s puppetry team in a part-time capacity, making him one of the youngest Sesame Street puppeteers in the show’s history. He became a full-time part of Sesame Street at the age of 18. Tartaglia created and puppeteered the roles of Princeton (a recent college grad) and Rod (a closeted Republican investment banker) in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Avenue Q. For his roles, he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 2004. In 2004, he helped to raise $525,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Tartaglia is openly gay. Regarding the matter, he stated, “I’m less worried about being a positive role as a gay person than making sure there’s no negative stereotypes of any sort.” He married Michael Shawn Lewis in New York in 2012.

02-16-1982 Marie-Ève Nault – Born in Trois-Rivières, Canada. She is a

Canadian soccer player. Nault represented Canada women’s national team at the 2012 Summer Olympics, which won the bronze medal. She was one of 49 out LGBT athletes at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

02-16-1982 Ralph Shortey – Born in Casper, Wyoming and a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. He is an American former Republican politician

and was convicted of child sex trafficking. In early December 2017, police arrested Shortey at a motel where he was found with a 17-year-old male prostitute. It later came out that the two had sex at least twice during the year before he was arrested. As a Republican in the Oklahoma State Senate, he advocated “family values.” The Associated Press reported that as a state senator, Shortey “routinely voted with his Republican colleagues on bills targeting gay and transgender people,” including a measure passed in 2017 to allow business owners to discriminate against LGBT people. Shortey was also known for his imposing size. He’s 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 315 pounds. Shortey was married and has four daughters. Once divorced, his wife and children changed their last name. On September 17, 2018, he received a sentence of 15 years in prison, and 10 years of supervised release. Shortey was also ordered to pay $125,000 in restitution to the seventeen-year-old.

1985

“Careless Whisper” by Wham! began a three week stay at the top of the Billboard chart. An 18-year-old George Michael had written the melody four years earlier while riding on a bus.

Singer k.d. lang was pictured on the cover of the first issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

Famed pop artist Keith Haring dies from AIDS at 31. Six months earlier he had been quoted as saying, “The hardest thing is just knowing that there’s so much more stuff to do.” He was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring’s work grew to iconic popularity from his exuberant spontaneous drawings in New York City subways – chalk outlines on blank black advertising-space backgrounds – depicting radiant babies, flying saucers, and deified dogs. After public recognition he created larger scale works such as colorful murals, many of them commissioned. His imagery has become a widely recognized visual language. His later work often addressed political and societal themes – especially homosexuality and AIDS – through his own unique iconography.

1991,

London: The Direct Action group OUTRAGE! organizes a gay and lesbian kiss-in at Piccadilly Circus in protest of a section of the Sexual Offences Act that makes public displays of affection between men illegal. Also this day in London, 7,000 demonstrators march to protest the recent arrest of gay male s/m devotees and other anti-gay/lesbian initiatives.

Elton John accepted undisclosed libel damages from the Britain’s Sunday Times after the newspaper erroneously repeated an entirely false rumor that he acted in a rude, self-important and arrogant manner at a charity ball.

2015 – Lesbian singer Leslie Gore (May 2, 1946 – February 16, 2015) dies at 68. She was an American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist. At the age of 16 (in 1963) she recorded the pop hit “It’s My Party“, and followed it up with other hits including “Judy’s Turn to Cry“, “She’s a Fool“, “You Don’t Own Me“, “Maybe I Know” and “California Nights“. Gore also worked as an actress and composed songs with her brother, Michael Gore, for the 1980 film Fame, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. She hosted an LGBT-oriented public television show, In the Life, on American TV in the 2000s, and was active until 2014. In a 2005 interview with After Ellen, she stated she was a lesbian and had been in a relationship with luxury jewelry designer Lois Sasson since 1982. She had known since she was 20 and stated that although the music business was “totally homophobic,” she never felt she had to pretend she was straight. At the time of her death, Gore and her partner Lois Sasson had been together for 33 years.

2016 – Washington State Supreme Court rules against discrimination based on sexual orientation in the “gay wedding flowers” case. The Washington Supreme Court rules unanimously that a florist who refused to provide services for a same-sex wedding broke the state’s antidiscrimination law, even though she claimed doing so would violate her religious beliefs.

1847, Germany – Philipp Friedrich Alexander, Prince of Eulenburg and Hertefeld, Count von Sandels (12 February 1847 – 17 September 1921) was a diplomat and composer of Imperial Germany who achieved considerable influence as the closest friend of Wilhelm II. He was the central member of the so-called Liebenberg Circle, a group of artistically minded German aristocrats within Wilhelm’s entourage. Eulenburg played an important role in the rise of Bernhard von Bülow, but fell from power in 1907 due to the Harden–Eulenburg affair when he was accused of homosexuality.

02-12-1902 – 07-16-1967

Bet van Beeren – Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She was a flamboyant bar owner in Amsterdam. She named the bar Café ’t Mandje (The Basket Café) because her mother brought the food in every day in a basket. Van Beeren was openly lesbian and her bar catered to lesbians and gays, as long as there was no kissing, which would have violated the vice laws and caused her to lose her liquor license. Her clientele included artists, intellectuals, pimps, prostitutes, and sailors. She often dressed in a sailor suit or leathers, and entertained her customers with singing and dancing. Making a lot of money from the pub, she became known for her charity works, helping the poor, children, and the elderly. During WWII, she allowed the bar to be used as an arms depot for the Dutch resistance. Her bar was off limits to Nazi troops because it was considered a red-light establishment. She hung neckties and souvenirs from patrons from the ceiling and held dances on Queen’s Day, where same-sex couples could dance together. Van Beeren died of liver disease (it was told that she drank up to 40 bottles of beer a day) in July 1967. She was laid in state on the billiard table of the bar for several days before being buried. Greet, van Beeren’s younger sister continued to run the pub until 1982. Shortly before Greet died, she sold it to her niece, Diana van Laar. Van Laar completed a renovation of the pub and reopened it on April 2, 2008. In 2017, a bridge was renamed on the pub’s 90th anniversary to honor van Beeren, representing her building of bridges between diverse groups. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” The date was chosen to coincide with the 100^th anniversary of the birth of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who emancipated enslaved African Americans.

02-12-1923 Franco Zeffirelli – Born in Florence, Italy. He was an Italian director and

producer of films and television. Known principally for his 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. His 1967 version of The Taming of the Shrew remains the best-known film adaptation of the play. He was also a director and designer of operas and a former senator (1994-2001) for the Italian centre-right “Froza Italia” party. In 1996 he came out as gay. He considered himself “homosexual” rather than gay, he felt the term “gay” was less elegant.

On the USA Charts, the album Pearl by the recently departed Janis Joplin moved from 14-9 in its third week and the self-titled Elton John was on its way down at #10.

The night prime-time special entitled “Cher” aired with guests Elton John, Flip Wilson and Bette Midler.

1976: Gay actor, Sal Mineo, is stabbed to death in the garage of his West Hollywood apartment building at 8569 Holloway Drive. He is only 37 years old. The crime goes unsolved for a number of years until his murderer, Lionel Ray Williams, is caught and convicted.

Mineo known for his performance as John “Plato” Crawford opposite James Dean in the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955). He was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his roles in Rebel Without a Cause and Exodus (1960). At the time of his death, he was in a six-year relationship and was living with male actor Courtney Burr III.

A lot of [these people] feel they’re way beyond where these films take us. But the more intelligent know there has to be a groundbreaking ceremony, which is what this is.”

At the 11th annual BRIT awards in London, Queen‘s “These Are The Days Of Our Lives” is named Best British Single and the late Freddie Mercury is honored for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. For the fourth time in the last five years, U2 is named as the Best International Group.

Whitney Houston continued to set the bar high on the R&B chart with an 11th week at #1 for “I Will Always Love You” and with a 12th week at #1 with “I Will Always Love You”, one short of the all-time record at the time held by Boyz II Men with “End Of The Road”.

“The Bodyguard” Soundtrack logged a 10th week at #1 on the U.S. Album chart.

David Bowie received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Post 9/11 – The Shock Decade From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2004 – Under the direction of Mayor Gavin Newsom, the City of San Francisco begins performing same-sex marriages, starting with Phyllis Lyon (born November 10, 1924) and Del Martin (May 5, 1921 – August 27, 2008), who had been a couple for 51 years. That marriage was invalidated by the California Supreme Court, but Lyon and Martin married once again on June 16, 2008, a couple of months before Del Martin’s death on August 27, 2008. Over 80 couples were given quick ceremonies. Robin Tyler and Troy Perry (born July 27, 1940) , with attorney Gloria Allred, file a lawsuit for marriage equality shortly after the San Francisco marriages were dissolved. One month later, the cases were consolidated. The marriage equality case actually started in Los Angeles rather than San Francisco.

2006

“The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties” became Barry Manilow’s second Billboard chart topping album. His first was in 1977 with “Barry Manilow Live”.

2007

A full frontal nude photo of Madonna, taken in 1979 before she became famous, sold at auction for $37,500. The black and white picture was taken at a time when Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was a 20-year-old dancer trying to make ends meet in New York.

Adele was the biggest winner at The 59th Annual Grammy Awards with five trophies, including Album of the Year for 25, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for ‘Hello’. Adele also became the first artist in history to win all three general field awards in the same ceremony twice, previously winning all three categories in 2012. David Bowie won Best Rock Performance, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Song and Best Recording Package for Blackstar.

1873, UK – Simeon Solomon (9 October 1840 – 14 August 1905) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter noted for his depictions of Jewish life and same-sex desire as well as a poet. Solomon and George Roberts, a stableman, are arrested at a public urinal in London and charged with the Crime of Buggery.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra presented its first concert. The symphony was the first by a municipal orchestra to be supported by taxes.

02-11-1962 Tammy Baldwin – Born in Madison, Wisconsin. She is an American politician and has always been out publicly as a lesbian. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin’s 2nd district. In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, the first woman to represent Wisconsin, and the first out gay U.S. Senator in history. In 1993, she said that she was disappointed by President Clinton’s compromise on LGBT rights in supporting the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. In early 1994, she proposed legalizing same-sex marriage in Wisconsin. On October 20, 2013, Baldwin was one of sixteen female Democratic senators to sign a letter endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in the 2016 Presidential Election.

On February 5, 2020, regarding the impeachment of Trump, she stated, “I only have one of 100 votes in the U.S. Senate and I am afraid that the majority is putting this president above the law by not convicting him of these impeachable offenses. But let’s be clear, this is not an exoneration of President Trump, it is a failure to show moral courage and hold this president accountable.”

1965: At the San Francisco trial of the four people arrested at the Council on Religion and the Homosexual’s New Year’s Ball, the judge orders the jury to find the defendants not guilty. The decision is widely seen as a turning point in the homophile movement’s fight for gay and lesbian civil rights.

February 11, 1966

1967: In a follow-up action to Los Angeles’ Black Cat demonstration on New Year’s Eve, around 40 picketers demonstrate in front of the Black Cat in coordination with hippies and other counterculture groups who had been targeted by police for harassment and violence.

02-11-1967 The Black Cat protest – Almost 2 years before Stonewall. On New Year’s Eve, 1966/1967, at midnight, as traditional New Year’s kisses

were exchanged in the LGBT bar, the Black Cat, undercover cops started arresting people without identifying themselves. Fourteen people were dragged to waiting patrol cars. The cops then raided the New Faces bar, where other LGBT people were arrested. The raids sparked anger and fear in the gay community. At the time, it was the bars that were the only relatively safe place for gay people to gather. Six of the men arrested for kissing at the Black Cat were convicted of lewd conduct and required to register as sex offenders. Lawyer Herbert Selwyn

argued for the first time on the basis of equal protection under the law. The US Supreme Court declined to hear the case. Two LGBT organizations came together — Personal Rights in Defense and Education (PRIDE) and The Southern California Council on Religion and Homophile (SCCRH) to stage an unprecedented protest. A legal defense fund was set up and the media was contacted. On February 11, 1967, in response to the harassment and unprovoked police attack, nearly 600 people gathered in a peaceful demonstration in front of the Black Cat.

There was some television coverage of the protest and the only print coverage was by the L.A. Free Press. In 2008, the Black Cat was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #939 for its early and significant role in the LGBT civil rights movement. It’s the first building in Los Angeles to be landmarked solely for its LGBT history. The Black Cat is located at 3909 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, California.

On December 15, 2008, Fox News reported that O’Day attended a party accompanied with her girlfriend/lover, according to an anonymous friend in attendance. BCE to The Suffragettes

1874 – Amy Lowell American lesbian poet was born in Brookline. Massachusetts. A militant literary leader she thumbed her nose at the Boston Brahmans who raised her and outed herself. Her lover was actress Ada Dwyer Russell whom she called “Peter.” Russell is reputed to be the subject of Lowell’s more erotic works, most notably the love poems contained in ‘Two Speak Together’, a subsection of Pictures of the Floating World. The two women traveled to England together, where Lowell met Ezra Pound, who at once became a major influence and a major critic of her work. Pound considered Lowell’s embrace of Imagism to be a kind of hi-jacking of the movement, and among his friends he referred to her as the “hippo-poetess”, because of her large body size. Lowell has been linked romantically to writer Mercedes de Acosta, but the only evidence of any contact between them is a brief correspondence about a planned memorial for Duse. Lowell was a short but imposing figure who kept her hair in a bun and wore a pince-nez.

1923 – Brendan Behan is born. Behan was an Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, and playwright who wrote in both English and Irish. Born in Dublin into a republican family, he became a member of the IRA’s youth organisation Fianna Éireann at the age of fourteen. However, there was also a strong emphasis on Irish history and culture in the home, which meant he was steeped in literature and patriotic ballads from a tender age. Behan eventually joined the IRA at sixteen, which led to him serving time in a borstal youth prison in the United Kingdom (see “The Borstal Boy” ) and was also imprisoned in Republic of Ireland. During this time, he took it upon himself to study and he became a fluent speaker of the Irish language. Subsequently released from prison as part of a general amnesty given by the Fianna Fáil government in 1946, Behan moved between homes in Dublin, Kerry and Connemara and also resided in Paris for a period. Behan had married Beatrice Salkeld in 1955. A daughter, Blanaid, was born in 1963. This however, was not enough to bring Behan back from his alcoholic abyss. By early March 1964, the end was in sight. Collapsing at the Harbour Lights bar, he was transferred to the Meath Hospital in central Dublin, where he died, aged 41. The family of Brendan Behan claim that he was bisexual all of his life, but he kept it quiet for his families sake.

1927 – Three plays with same-sex love content are raided and the casts and producers are arrested. The plays are “The Captive,” a controversial play about two women with an “abnormal relationship”; “Sex” starring Mae West; and “The Virgin Man.” No one was prosecuted but the plays closed days later. The Captive, by Édouard Bourdet, was a three-act melodrama was among the first Broadway plays to deal with lesbianism and caused a scandal in New York City. The play was shut down after 160 performances and prompted the adoption of a state law dealing with obscenity; Sex by Jane Mast was “obscene, indecent, immoral, and impure” and put Mae Westin prison for 10 days; The Virgin Man was a 1956 Argentine comedy film directed by Román Viñoly Barreto and starring Luis Sandrini. 02-09-1938 – 12-31-2012 Jovette Marchessault – Born in Montreal, Quebec.

She was a Canadian writer, artist, and an important pioneer of lesbian and feminist literature and art in Canada. In 1980, with the publication of Triptyque lesbien, she risked her developing career by becoming the first Quebec novelist to declare her lesbianism. A portrait of Marchessault, by artist Robert Laliberté, is on exhibit in the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives’ National Portrait Collection, in honor of her role as a builder of LGBT culture and history in Canada.

1941 – Sheila James Kuehl (born February 9, 1941) is an American politician and former child actor, currently the member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 3rd District. In 1994, she became the first openly gay California legislator and in 1997, she was the first woman to be named Speaker pro Tempore in California. Kuehl most recently served as a Democratic member of the California State Senate, representing the 23rd district in Los Angeles County and parts of southern Ventura County. A former member of the California State Assembly, she was elected to the Senate in 2000 and served until December 2008. She was elected to her supervisorial post in 2014. In her capacity as Supervisor, she also sits on the Metro Board, First 5 LA, and is the County appointee to the South Coast Air Quality Management District. As a child actress she performed under the stage name Sheila James. the role she is probably best known for – her portrayal of teen-aged genius Zelda Gilroy, the wannabe girlfriend of the title character in the television series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, which aired on CBS from 1959 to 1963. Zelda was originally intended to be a one-shot character in the early Dobie Gillis episode “Love is a Science”, but Dobie creator Max Shulman liked Kuehl and had her signed on as a semi-regular cast member. Since 2010, Kuehl has hosted “Get Used To It”, a national cable show on LGBT issues, filmed in West Hollywood.

1943 – Marc ’10½’ Stevens was a pioneering bisexual sex industry figure during the 1970’s in New York City. He appeared in over 80 pornographic movies, and he also led an erotic dance troupe and performed in live sex shows. While he predominantly appeared in heterosexual films and loops, he made a number of gay movies as well. He was a close associate of leading sex industry figures such as Jason & Tina Russell, Annie Sprinkle, who was also his neighbor for a time, Sharon Mitchell, Jamie Gillis, Georgina Spelvin and Gloria Leonard. Tall and lean with a well-defined musculature, he had the nickname “10½” because of the size of his rather large circumcised penis. Stevens passed away of AIDS in 1989 at age 46

1944 – Alice Walker (born February 9, 1944) is born. She is an African-American novelist, short story writer, poet, and activist. She wrote the novel The Color Purple (1982) for which she won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She also wrote the novels Meridian (1976) and The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970), among other works. Walker dislikes labels, but acknowledges having been in love with both men and women and, in a 1996 Essence article, described herself as bisexual. . In the mid-1990s, she was involved in a romantic relationship with singer Tracy Chapman. “It was delicious and lovely and wonderful and I totally enjoyed it and I was completely in love with her but it was nobody’s business but ours.” Walker wrote, “At one point I learned Transcendental Meditation. This was 30-something years ago. It took me back to the way that I naturally was as a child growing up way in the country, rarely seeing people. I was in that state on oneness with creation and it was as if I didn’t exist except as a part of everything.”

the most respected women’s health specialists in the United States. In 2012, she announced that she was was diagnosed with leukemia and took a leave of absence to pursue chemotherapy treatment. After a successful treatment, she returned to work the following year. On February 22, 2004, she married her partner, Dr. Helen Sperry Cooksey in San Francisco.

Fredericton’s annual Queer Pride celebrations have always been an exciting time of year for the city’s queer community, but this year the community was particularly proud. In a unanimous vote earlier this year, Fredericton’s City Council allowed the Fredericton Pride 2010 Committee to hold the city’s first Queer Pride Parade on August 8th.

The decision ended years of struggle by the queer community and allies to hold such a parade in the provincial capital because of City Council’s opposition (similar marches have been happening for years in Saint John and Moncton). With over three hundred marchers in attendance, as well as several hundred onlookers lining the parade route, the march was both a celebration of the city’s sexual and political diversity, as well as a way for straight allies to show support and solidarity with queer friends, family, and co-workers.

British Columbia was the host to the 2010 Winter Olympics, for the first time, the Olympic games included the Pride House for LGBT athletes.

1970 – Sometime in the 1940s a sign appeared over the popular Los Angeles bar at Barney’s Beanery that read “FAGOTS – STAY OUT.” The message so offended the locals that Life magazine did an article on opposition to the sign in 1964, which included a photograph of the owner steadfastly holding on to it. The owner died in 1968, and efforts continued to have the sign removed. The Gay Liberation Front organized a zap of the restaurant on February 7, 1970 to push for its removal. The sign disappeared that day. The sign was put up and taken down several times over the next 14 years, but the practice ended in December, 1984, days after the city voted itself into existence. The then-mayor, Valerie Terrigno, the entire city council and gay-rights activists marched into Barney’s and relieved the wall of the offending sign. It was held by Morris Kight for many years and now rests in the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives.

01-31-1900 – 07-23-1982 Betty Parsons (Born Betty Bierne Pierson) – Born in New York City, New York. She was an American artist, art dealer, and collector, known for her early promotion of Abstract Expressionism. In 1920, she married Schuyler Livingston Parson, a rich, alcoholic gay man.

After the couple divorced in 1923, Betty Parsons, as she was called for the rest of her life, moved to Paris. For the eight or ten years that she lived in France, she had an affair with the English painter Adge Baker. The two women shared a house together for six years on Rue Boulard in Montparnasse. They would remain friends for the rest of her life. Parsons moved back to the U.S. in 1933. During the McCarthy years she went back into the closet, but supported gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists during this time of oppression. From the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s, she was involved with actress and painter, Strelsa van Scriver. In 1946, she opened the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City and exhibited for the first time publicly Abstract Expressionist. The gallery became one of the most prestigious of the mid-twentieth century. It closed in 1981, a year before Parson’s death.

1902 – American actress Tallulah Bankhead (January 31, 1902 – December 12, 1968) was born in Huntsville, Alabama. She was an American actress of the stage and screen. Bankhead was known for her husky voice, outrageous personality, and devastating wit. Originating some of the 20th century theater’s preeminent roles in comedy and melodrama, she gained acclaim as an actress on both sides of the Atlantic. Bankhead became an icon of the tempestuous, flamboyant actress, and her unique voice and mannerisms are often subject to imitation and parody. In her personal life, Bankhead struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and was infamous for her uninhibited sex life. Rumors about Bankhead’s sex life have lingered for years, and she was linked romantically with many notable female personalities of the day, including Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Cornell, Eva Le Gallienne, Hope Williams, Beatrice Lillie, and Alla Nazimova, as well as writer Mercedes de Acosta and singer Billie Holiday. Actress Patsy Kelly confirmed she had a sexual relationship with Bankhead when she worked for her as a personal assistant. Bankhead never publicly described herself as being bisexual. She did, however, describe herself as “ambisextrous”.

01-31-1905 – 07-13-1960 Anna Blaman – Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was a Dutch writer and poet. Anna Blaman was her pen name. She was born Johanna

Petronella Vrugt. Her novel, A Matter of Life and Death (1954) is her most notable work and was translated into English in 1974. As a high profile figure, who was openly lesbian, she helped open doors for other Dutch lesbians. At the age of 55, she died of a cerebral embolism. The Dutch film, To Play or to Die (1990) was based on one of her stories.

01-31-1908 – 12-16-1992 Erica Brausen – Born in Düsseldorf, Germany. She was an art dealer and established the Hanover Gallery in London in 1946. Brausen supported several influential contemporary artists, including Francis Bacon. As a German national, she

encountered many difficulties and restrictions. A gay artist friend married her which allowed her to work legally. From 1946 until 1973, the Hanover Gallery was among the most influential galleries in Europe. Other artists that the galley represented included Alberto Giacometti, Lucian Freud, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Henry Moore. Brausen was a lesbian and her life partner was Catharina “Toto” Koopman, a one-time Chanel model and film actress. The two met in 1945. Koopman helped Brausen run the Hanover Gallery and the two women lived openly together until Koopman’s death in 1991.

In a slightly convoluted way, state law defines “sexual orientation” as including “gender identity.” Thus, according to the Washington State Human Rights Commission, RCW 49.60 “makes discrimination unlawful on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, sex, sexual orientation, disability, familial status, marital status, and age. Discrimination based on sexual orientation, including gender identity, will be illegal in employment, housing, public accommodations [including schools], credit and lending, and insurance. All employers with eight or more employees, except tribes and religious non-profit institutions, are covered by the law.” It is still perfectly legal in 36 states to discriminate in employment or at school against someone you perceive to be transgender. In thirty of those states it is still legal to discriminate against someone you think is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

Jean Nicolas Arthur (20 October 1854 – 10 November 1891) was a French poet who is known for his influence on modern literature and arts, which prefigured surrealism. Rimbaud was known to have been a libertine and for being a restless soul, having engaged in an at times violent romantic relationship with fellow poet Paul Verlaine, which lasted nearly two years. Paul-Marie Verlaine (30 March 1844 – 8 January 1896) was a French poet associated with the Decadent movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry. Rimbaud and Verlaine began a short but torrid affair. They led a wild, vagabond-like life spiced by absinthe and hashish, and were known as the “poets from hell.”

1970 – Forty members of the Gay Activist Alliance including Vito Russo (July 11, 1946 – November 7, 1990), Morty Manford (1950-1992), Jim Owles (1947-1993), Arnie Kantrowitz (born November 26, 1940,, and Arthur Evans, and Columbia graduate student Pete Fisher invade the offices of Harper’s Magazine with a news crew from WOR-TV New York to protest the article “Homo/Hetero: The Struggle for Sexual Identity which presented homosexuality as a mental illness. The article was written by Joseph Epstein who lamented homosexuals as “an affront to our rationality”. GAA president Arthur Evans verbally attacked editor Midge Decter for publishing an article which would add to the suffering of homosexuals. Although the Harper’s zap falls to elicit an official response from the magazine, it has an enormous impact oil future media coverage of lesbian and gay issues, in addition to leading to GAA’s national Television debut in a three part television news series on gay liberation.

1970: To protest a September 1970 Harper’s cover story entitled “The Struggle for Sexual Identity,” in which editor Joseph Epstein had lamented homosexuals as “an affront to our rationality” and homosexuality as “anathema,” Columbia graduate student Pete Fisher stages a sit-in at the magazine’s Park Avenue offices with 40 other Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) members. 1997 – Tommy Windsor, a top investigator with the South Carolina’s Attorney General’s office, is forced to resign after emailing derogatory comments about people of color and homophobic slurs.

1766 – Christoffel Bosch van Leeuwarden, a seventy year old porter in the Netherlands, was convicted of seduction to sodomy and sentenced to three years of prison labor.

1893 – Jean Acker (October 23, 1893 – August 16, 1978) was an American film actress with a career dating from the silent film era through the 1950s. She was perhaps best known as the estranged wife of silent film star Rudolph Valentino(May 6, 1895 – August 23, 1926). Acker had an affair with the actress Alla Nazimova(June 3, 1879 – July 13, 1945). Nazimova included Acker in what was dubbed the “Sewing circles“, a group of actresses who were forced to conceal the fact that they were lesbian or bisexual, thus living secret lives. Another of her female lovers wasactress Grace Darmond(November 20, 1893 – October 8, 1963)with whom she was involved during her relationship with Valentino.

1906, France – Albrto Santos-Dumot (20 July 1873 – 23 July 1932) makes the first public European flight of an airplane in Europe. His plane, the Olseau de prole, (bird of prey)is considered the first to take off, fly, and land without the use of other assistance. Later that year he flew his fixed-wing aircraft, the 14B, to win the Deutsch-Achdeacon Prize. Three years before the Wright brothers, the gay Brazilian aviation pioneer becomes the first person to fly more than 80 feet under official observation. Seriously ill and said to be depressed over his multiple sclerosis and the use of aircraft in warfare, he hanged himself on July 23, 1932.

1907, Germany – The Molte v. Harden trial begins in Germany. Journalist Maximillian Harden accused General Kuno Count von Moltke (1847–1923) of being in a homosexual relationship. Moltke filed a civil suit, and though Harden was acquitted, the verdict was later overturned and he was found guilty. Moltke was an adjutant to Kaiser Wilhelm II and military commander of Berlin. The homosexual scandal known as the Harden-Eulenburg Affair rocked the Kaiser’s entourage. Moltke was forced to leave the military service.

1937 – Mattachine Society founder Harry Hay’s (April 7, 1912 – October 24, 2002) former lover Stanley Haggart wrote to him after marrying a woman in an attempt to change his sexuality. “To think it had to take a marriage with its wedding night experiences to show me where my real affinity lies. Every cell in me screamed out in protest at my desecration of my body. At that time I knew that I belonged to you and you to me.” The two men were eventually reunited in 1938, but Harry had become increasingly active in meetings of the Communist Party and the two men were politically incompatible. Hay “abandoned” Stanley, whose homely domestic ideals he regarded as unrealistic, and Stanley in due course made a new life-match.

1977: Two thousand people demonstrated in downtown Montreal to protest October 22 bar raids. Police attack the demonstrators with motorcycles and billy-clubs and made further arrests. Truxx and another bar, Le Mystique, were simultaneously raided on Oct. 22, 1977. Fifty police officers wearing bulletproof vests and carrying machine guns conducted the raid, charging 146 patrons as “found-ins” and Truxx’s owner as a keeper of a common bawdy house. Detainees were held for eight hours in crowded cells, subjected to venereal disease testing and denied the opportunity to call their lawyers. Community response to the raid was quick. The night after the raid, two thousand people blocked a downtown intersection in protest. When police tried to break it up by driving their motorcycles into the crowd and clubbing people, protesters threw beer bottles. Hundreds turned up at a public forum, organized by l’Association pour les droits des gaies du Québec, and a defence committee for the found-ins was formed. It took five years for the charges against the Truxx patrons to be dropped.

1978 –

1979: Former Winnipeg Free Press publisher Richard Malone pleads guilty to charges of buggery and obstructing justice. He is given a one-year sentence, following a “juvenile sex ring” investigation in February 1979.

He was 59 and had homes in Manhattan and Guilford, Vt. With John Scagliotti, he was the host of “Lavender Hour,” a gay radio program on WBCN in Boston. He is survived by Mr. Scagliotti, an Emmy Award-winning American film director and producer, his companion of 24 years.

1998 – The Los Angeles City council condemns the “Making Sense of Homosexuality” conference, organized by the anti-gay National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, known as NARTH, saying that claims of “curing” homosexuals creates an atmosphere that can lead to anti-gay violence.”

1999 – Religious right leader Rev. Jerry Falwell and evangelical Christian supporters met with Rev. Mel White and gay Christians for an anti-violence forum.

2002: Pioneering gay rights activist Harry Hay dies of lung cancer in hospice care. A founder and architect of the modern gay rights movement, in 1950 Hay and four others formed one of the nation’s first gay rights organizations the Mattachine Society. Hay’s believed in the cultural minority status of homosexuals which led him to take a stand against assimilation. In June 1969, the Stonewall riots in New York marked a move toward a more radical and militant approach among gay rights activists; Hay however stated that “I wasn’t impressed by Stonewall, because of all the open gay projects we had done throughout the sixties in Los Angeles. As far as we were concerned, Stonewall meant that the East Coast was catching up.” The riot led to the emergence of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF), with Hay involving himself in the early development of its Los Angeles chapter. Harry Hay passed away on October 24, 2002 at age 90. His ashes, mingled with those of his partner John Burnside, were scattered in the Nomenus Faerie Sanctuary, Wolf Creek, Oregon
