Of Hurston’s four novels and more than 50 published short stories, plays, and essays, she is best known for her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Living in Harlem in the 1920s, Hurston befriended the likes of Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967)and Countee Cullen (May 30, 1903 – January 9, 1946), among several others. Her apartment, according to some accounts, was a popular spot for social gatherings. During a period of financial and medical difficulties, Hurston was forced to enter St. Lucie County Welfare Home, where she suffered a stroke. She died of hypertensive heart disease on January 28, 1960, and was buried at the Garden of Heavenly Rest in Fort Pierce, Florida. Her remains were in an unmarked grave until 1973. Novelist Alice Walker (born February 9, 1944)and literary scholar Charlotte D. Hunt found an unmarked grave in the general area where Hurston had been buried, and decided to mark it as hers. There were rumors that Zora was gay or at least bisexual.

Coots may have been Johnston’s partner at the time of the arrests, as reports at the time indicate that they had shared an apartment in Rolla “for the last 15 or 16 years.” Reports indicate that “at least of score” of other students and residents were implicated.

2004 – Six former students – Alana Flores and five others — from Morgan Hill School district (in California) settle a lawsuit against the district for $1.1 million. “[The settlement also] requires the school district to implement mandatory annual training regarding harassment based on sexual orientation or gender identity for administrators, teachers, middle school and high school students, and staff. The settlement ends five years of wrangling during which a state law was passed — with the Morgan Hill students’ input — prohibiting anti-gay harassment of students. The case also prompted a U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in April that stated public school administrators who fail to take effective steps to counter anti-gay harassment could be violating the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection — even if they have an anti-discrimination policy in place. That ruling covered districts in California and eight other Western states and, according to plaintiffs’ attorneys, finally brought district officials to the negotiating table,” according to the L.A. Times.

1412, France – Joan of Arc (6 January c. 1412– 30 May 1431) is born in Domremy, France. She is considered a heroine of France for her role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years’ War and was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint. She was a soldier, and on May 23,  1430, she was captured at Compiègne by the Burgundian faction, which was allied with the English. She was later handed over to the English and tried for heresy. She was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431, dying at about nineteen years of age. There’s no evidence of St. Joan’s sexual orientation, but she was male in her gender expression, living as a soldier and leader of men in a time when women didn’t serve in the military, dressed in men’s clothes, and wore her hair short. In 1920, Joan of Arc was canonized a saint by the Roman Catholic church.

She was director of the United States Mint from 1933 to 1953. She forged a strong bond with Mary Margaret O’Reilly, the Assistant Director of the Mint and one of the United States’ highest-ranking female civil servants of her time. Ross served five terms as Director, retiring in 1953. During her later years, she wrote for various women’s magazines and traveled. Ross died in Washington, D.C., at the age of 101. At the time of her death, she was the oldest ex-governor in the United States. She may not have been a lesbian, but she was one of the first feminists to gain political office.

01-05-1931 – 12-01-1989 Alvin Ailey Jr. – Born in Rogers, Texas. He was an African-American choreographer and activist who founded the

alvin-ailey

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York City. He is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th-century concert dance. Ailey was born to his 17-year old mother in Rogers, Texas. His father abandoned the family when Alvin was six months old. He grew up during a time of racial segregation, violence, and lynchings against African Americans. When he was five, his mother was raped by a group

of white men, leaving him afraid of whites. It was his early experiences in the Baptist church and juke joints that instilled in him a fierce sense of black pride. In 1942, Ailey’s mother moved to Los Angeles where he attended predominantly black schools. He belonged to the glee club, wrote poetry, and demonstrated a talent for languages. He became serious about dance in 1949 when his school friend Carmen De Lavallade introduced him to the Hollywood studio of Lester Horton. (He kept his life as a dancer a secret from his

alvin-ailey-american-dance-theater

mother for the first two years) Horton became his mentor, giving him both a technique and a foundation with which to grow. When Horton died in 1953, the tragedy left the company without an artistic director. Ailey assumed the position. In 1958 he formed his own group, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. His company is multi-racial and always employed artists based solely on talent and integrity. In 1988, he received the Kennedy Center Honors.

Ailey died one year later at the age of 58. To protect his mother from the social stigma of his death from AIDS, he asked his doctor to announce that he had died of terminal blood dyscrasia.

Despite his professional success, Ailey’s personal life was beset with difficulties. Though his proclivities were an open secret, he rarely spoke of his personal relationships and seemed ill at ease with his sexuality. In the mid-1960s, he was in a romantic relationship with a young white schoolteacher who helped manage the dance company, but this ended after a couple of years. Thereafter, Ailey spent his time socializing in gay bars and hanging out with street people, and had numerous short-term liaisons with young men who his friends felt took advantage of his generosity. Ailey suffered from bipolar disorder which worsened over time as did his drinking and drug use. In 1980, he was arrested for causing a disturbance at the Columbia University residence of a former paramour which landed him in Bellevue hospital.

In 2014, President Obama selected Ailey to be a posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

It was created by George Edin, Mark Kaluk, John Allec, Walter Davis, and Bill Fields. When After Stonewall launched its “critical journal of gay liberation” in 1977, the collective had modest goals and a wry self-deprecating sense of humor about its enterprise. It anticipated readers might question the need for “yet another left publication,” this time by “critical faggots” from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Inspired by Boston’s Fag Rag, the collective’s goal was to offer a queer journalistic forum intended to stimulate discussion amongst gay men and lesbians. (information provided by Dr. Valerie J. LGBTQ2 for January 3

BCE to The Suffragettes

1752, Switzerland – Swiss historian Johannes Von Muller (3 January 1752 – 29 May 1809) is born in Neunkirch. He spent 40 years writing a history of his homeland, but more interesting are his love letters to Charles Victor de Bonstetten (3 September 1745 – 3 February 1832), a handsome young Swiss writer. Outed by Goethe, Muller’s poems to Bonstetten were not published until 1835, long after his death.

01-03-1824 – 06-21-1891  Sophia B. Packard – Born in New Salem, Massachusetts. She was an American educator. She and her life-long partner, Harriet E. Giles, opened a school for African-American women in Atlanta, Georgia that would eventually become Spelman College. With a gift of $100 from First Baptist Church of Medford, Massachusetts, and a promise of administration and financial support from the Boston-based Woman’s American Baptist Home Mission Society, the two women opened a school in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church, an African-American church in southwest Atlanta. In 1882 the American Baptist Home Mission Society made a down payment on a permanent site for the school. In 1884 John D. Rockefeller paid the balance due. He had been impressed by Packard’s vision. The school was named in honor of Rockefeller’s wife and her parents, who were longtime activists in the anti-slavery movement. Packard remained on the board of trustees and as president of the school until her death in 1891. At the time of her death the school had 464 students and a faculty of 34. It became Spelman College in 1924, and in 1929 it became affiliated with Atlanta University. Packard and Giles are buried together at Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol, Massachusetts.

01-03-1893 – 08-04-1994   Irène Lagut – Born in Sucy-en-Brie, France. She

was a French painter and a pupil of Picasso. She mainly painted women, children, and harlequins. In the spring of 1916, Picasso fell madly in love with her. The affair was on and off until the end of 1916, when they decided to marry. When they were going to meet family in Barcelona, she left Picasso and returned to her female lover in Paris. In 1923, she and Picasso became lovers again and one of Picasso’s most famous works, The Lovers (1923) is of the two of them. According to Picasso biographer, John Richardson, “Irène Lagut was basically a lesbian. That is why she went back and forwards between girlfriends and then boyfriends. She led a peculiar life — she had been kept by a Russian grandduke in Moscow.”

01-03-1897 – 10-01-1979  Dorothy Arzner – Born in San Francisco, California. She was an American film director. Her directorial career in

dorothy-arzner

feature films spanned from the late 1920s into the early 1940s. Throughout that time she was the only woman working in the field. She was a lesbian who cultivated a masculine look in her clothes and appearance. Arzner had been linked romantically with a number of actresses, but lived the last 40 years of her life with choreographer Marion Morgan. The films she directed in the 1930s launched the careers of many actresses, including Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Sylvia Sidney, and Lucille Ball. In 1936, she became the first woman to join the newly formed Directors Guild of America.

01-03-1904 – 12-08-1990   Boris Kochno – Born in Moscow, Russia. He was a Russian poet, dancer, and librettist. In 1920 he became Sergei

Diaghilev’s secretary, librettists, and main collaborator. They were briefly lovers. In 1925, Kochno had an affair with Cole Porter. In 1933 he and George Balanchine founded the ballet company, Les Ballets. At the end of WWII, he and Roland Petit founded the Ballets des Champs-Élysées. He wrote several books, including Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. Kochno died in Paris in 1990.

01-03-1916 – 10-21-1995   Maxene Andrews – Born in Mound, Minnesota. She was one of the Andrew Sisters. With her sisters, Patty and Laverne, they were one of the most successful women’s singing groups, with 19 gold records and sales of nearly 100 million copies. They began performing in the early 1930s when the Depression wiped out their father’s business.  In 1937, the trio scored their first big hit with Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen. Maxene married Lou Levy in 1941 and divorced in 1950. She adopted 2 children. She had a relationship with her manager, Lynda Wells, and adopted her. It was the only way Maxene could legally protect her lover. She was estranged from her children at the time of her death and left everything to Lynda Wells. According to a radio interview by Lynda Wells in 2019, Maxene entered a thirteen-year relationship with a woman and later Wells became Maxene’s life partner. Wells stated, “To me, being gay was not a central focus of Maxene’s life at all. Her art was. Her singing was.” Wells also said that their status as companions, and Maxene’s health issues as she got older, led Maxene to adopt her as a daughter. “There was no such thing as being married at that time, she told the interviewer, and added, “During her lifetime, there was no such thing that existed for us.”

FilmIndependent.org is raising money to make a film on her life – An All American Affair: The True Story of Maxene Andrews

01-03-1897 – 08-01-1987  Pola Negri (b. Apolonia Chalupec) – Born in Lipno, Poland. She was a stage and film actress who achieved worldwide fame during the silent and golden eras of Hollywood and European film for her femme fatale roles. Negri was the first European film star to be invited to Hollywood, and became one of the most popular actresses in American silent film. Her two marriages, the first to Count Dambski (m. 1919; div. 1922), and Prince Mdivnai (m. 1927; div. 1931), were short lived. It was rumored that she was Valentino’s lover until his death in 1926. At his funeral, she “fainted” several times. The press considered her actions as a publicity stunt. Talullah Bankhead dismissed Negri as “The biggest phony in Hollywood, dahling! A lying lesbo, a Polish publicity hound. Had a mustache and couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag!” In the 1930’s, Negri had met oil heiress and vaudeville actress, Margaret West and in the 1940s, they became close friends. In 1957, the two women moved to San Antonio and lived together until West’s death in 1963. Negri inherited West’s estate and remained in San Antonio until her own death in 1987. 1948 – Dr. Alfred Kinsey publishes the landmark report “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male,” stating that 10% of all men are homosexual for at least three consecutive years. He uses a scale from zero (exclusively heterosexual) to six (exclusively homosexual). His research, very flawed by today’s standards, was nevertheless the first ever widely published and discussed research to explore such taboos as masturbation and same-sex sexual behavior.

writer, essayist, and librettist. He is known best for his ironic and well-plotted novels examining class difference and hypocrisy in early 20th-century British society. His 1908 novel, A Room With a View, is his most optimistic work, while A Passage to India (1924) brought him his greatest success. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 16 different years. Forester was homosexual (open to his friends but not to the public) and a lifelong bachelor. 01-01-1895 – 05-02-1972 J. Edgar Hoover – Born in Washington, D.C. He was the first Director of the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) of the U.S. Hoover built the FBI into a larger crime-fighting agency and adding police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories. Since the 1940s, rumors circulated that Hoover was homosexual. It has been speculated that Clyde Tolson, who became an associate director of the FBI and was Hoover’s primary heir, may have been his lover. Hoover reportedly hunted down and threatened anyone who made insinuation about his sexuality. Actress and singer Ethel Merman, who was a friend of Hoover’s since 1938, said in a 1978 interview, “Some of my best friends are homosexual. Everybody knew about J. Edgar Hoover, but he was the best chief the FBI ever had.”

Hoover has been credited with building the FBI into a larger crime-fighting agency than it was at its inception and with instituting a number of modernizations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories.

Harry Hay, founder of the Mattachine Society, one of the first gay rights organization, said Hoover and Tolson sat in boxes owned and used exclusively by gay men at the Del Mar racetrack in California. The relationship between Hoover and Tolson cannot be denied. The American flag that draped Hoover’s casket was given to Tolson. Tolson is buried a few yards away from Hoover in the Congressional Cemetery.

From the 1940s, rumors circulated that Hoover, who was still living with his mother, was homosexual. His ever constant companion and fellow FBI man Clyde Tolson was speculated to have been his lover. Hoover described Tolson as his alter ego: the men worked closely together during the day and, both single, frequently took meals, went to night clubs, and vacationed together. There are numerous stories of Hoover appearing in drag in New York. Usually in a red dress, he liked to be called “Mary”. Hoover used the FBI to target LGBT people and ruined many lives.

01-01-1898 – 08-07-1978   Valentine Penrose – Born in Mont-de-Marsan, Landes, France. She was a French surrealist poet, author, and collagist. In

In 1937, they divorced but met again in London during WWII, after which she lived half her time with her ex-husband and his second wife. The arrangement continued for the rest of her life. In 1936 she made a visit to India with the poet and painter Alice Paalen. The women became close and their relationship is shown in their poetry from 1936 to about 1945. Because of the lesbian attributes in their work, it is believed that they had an affair. Penrose’s writing on lesbianism was always with the same lovers: Emily and Rubia. She saw herself as in the Sapphic tradition of Renée Vivien, Natalie Barney, and Charles Baudelaire.

1901, Australia – The Commonwealth of Australia was founded as six former British colonies became six states with Edmund Barton as the first prime minister, and Canberra as the capital. In 1967 Orton had written in his diary “I have high hopes of dying in my prime.” Halliwell was a British actor, writer and collagist.

1933, Germany – Lovers Erika Mann (November 9, 1905 – August 27, 1969) and Therese Giehse (6 March 1898 – 3 March 1975) write and direct the anti-fascist Cabaret in Germany. The Nazis shut it down on Jan. 30th. It re-opens in Zurich and becomes a rallying point for exiles. Mann was a German actress and writer. She was the eldest daughter of the novelist Thomas Mann. Giehse was a German actress.

Several patrons were injured and a bartender was hospitalized with a fractured skull. Several hundred people spontaneously demonstrate on Sunset Boulevard and picket outside the Black Cat.
