1824, France — Astolphe-Louis-Léonor, the Marquis de Custine  (18 March 1790 – 25 September 1857), is beaten and left for dead after propositioning a male soldier in Saint-Denis. The scandal forces him out of the closet, but he recovers and lives the rest of his life as an open ‘sodomite’ with his partner Edward St. Barbe. Custine maintains a successful social life in Paris. He was a French aristocrat and writer who is best known for his travel writing, in particular his account of his visit to Russia La Russie en 1839. This work documents not only Custine’s travels through the Russian empire, but also the social fabric, economy, and way of life during the reign of Nicholas

1904: Anna Ruhling became one of the first feminists to publicly speak out in favor of rights for same-sex attracted women. At a meeting of the Scientific Humanitarian Committee, one of the earliest organizations to take an active role in the gay rights movement, Ruhling attempted to link the women’s movement with rights for lesbians, criticizing her colleagues for not taking an active role in fighting oppression against same-sex attracted women.

After a five year absence, Little Richard makes his return to Rock ‘n’ Roll as he kicks off his first ever tour of the UK, sharing the bill with Sam Cooke.  Enthusiastic audience reaction to Cooke’s secular set convinced Richard to end his self-imposed exile and return to rock ‘n’ roll.

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

1970 – Kate Millet (September 14, 1934 – September 6, 2017), American feminist writer, artist, activist, and author of her 1970 book Sexual Politics, comes out as a lesbian. She becomes a seminal influence on second-wave feminism. She joins a growing women’s movement to acknowledge her sexual orientation at a Daughters of Bilitis meeting in New York City.

1970: In New York City, two policemen invade a private club to interrupt a Daughters of Bilitis-New York business meeting. The blatantly harassing nature of the police action persuades many members of the hitherto low profile group of the need for militancy.

1972: Demonstrators at the annual convention of the Association for the Advancement of Behavioral Therapy protest the continued use of “aversion therapy” to “treat” homosexuality.

1974: An episode of the American medical drama “Marcus Welby, M.D.,” titled “The Outrage,” became the center of a massive protest organized by The National Gay And Lesbian Task Force. The episode equated homosexuality with pedophilia by depicting a gay may as a middle school teacher who preyed on his students. In response, many sponsors pulled their advertising from the episode, including Bayer, Gallo Wine, Listerine, Ralston-Purina, Colgate-Palmolive, Shell Oil, Lipton, American Home Products, Breck, Sterling Drug and Gillette.

International Lesbian Day

International Lesbian Day celebrates lesbian culture, community and visibility.

IDL dates back to New Zealand activism and is considered to be first celebrated on March 8th, 1980 by a group of 40 lesbians who marched through Wellington Park, New Zealand on International Women’s Day. International Lesbian Day is marked annual on October 8th because it’s exactly six months after International Women’s Day on March 8th.

1983

“True” by Spandau Ballet was awarded the #1 spot on the Adult Contemporary chart.

1985: A group of Latina/o lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists formed the Austin Latina Latino Lesbian and Gay Organization (ALLGO). It acted as an LGBT rights organization that “envision[ed] a just and equitable society that celebrates and nurtures vibrant people of color queer cultures.”

1985

Little Richard passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle while driving in West Hollywood and ran into a telephone pole, causing serious injury and forcing him to miss his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. He returned to spiritual music again after his recovery.

1986

Elton John, David Lee Roth and Cher appear on the opening night of The Late Show starring Joan Rivers. At the end of the program, the hostess stood next to Elton and joined him in singing “The Bitch Is Back”. Joan’s decision to host her own show without telling Johnny Carson, for whom she filled in for on The Tonight Show, would permanently sour the friendship between the two.

1987 – The Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF) begins running ads in response to an amendment introduced in the Senate by Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC) and passed by the house and senate to restrict funding to AIDS organizations which distributed gay-related prevention literature.

1987 – At the University of Vermont in Burlington nineteen people are arrested in a demonstration protesting the CIA’s exclusion of gays and lesbians.

1988

The debut from Tracy Chapman settled in at #3 and George Michael’s Faith was 9 on the USA lp charts

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1990 – During a campaign speech, US Congressman Jesse Helms refers to gays and lesbians as “disgusting people marching in the streets demanding all sorts of things, including the right to marry each other.”

1990 – Placido Domingo and Andre Watts raise $1.5 million at a fundraiser for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis.

1992 – Episcopal bishop A. Theodore Eastman issues an order to clergy in Maryland not to bless same-sex unions.

1992, Canada – The lesbian comic book “Hothead Paisan #7” was seized from Toronto Women’s Bookstore. Officials sited “sexual degradation” as the reason for the seizure, though it contained no sex. The prohibition was lifted seven months later.

1994

at 5 on teh USA song charts, John Mellencamp had his 10th Top 10 and 25th career hit “Wild Night” with help from Me’Shell Ndegeocello,

1997 – The National Black Lesbian and Gay Leadership Forum condemned gospel singers Angie and Debbie Winans for their anti-gay song “It’s Not Natural,” and BET-TV for providing them with a one-sided forum to promote their homophobic views. Earlier in the year, BET-TV refused to air MeShell NdegeOcello’s video “Leviticus Faggot,” about a black gay teenager’s struggle to come to terms with his sexuality.

1997: An episode of Ellen DeGeneres’ sitcom titled “Roommates” received an adult content warning because it contained a kiss between Ellen and another woman. The censorship reportedly infuriated Ellen, with her telling reporters: “I never wanted to be an activist, but now they’re turning me into one.”

1998, UK – Welsh secretary Ron Davies resigns after British tabloids reported he was robbed at knifepoint in a London park while looking for a male sexual companion. Bisexual Ronald Davies (born 6 August 1946) is a Welsh politician, former Secretary of State for Wales, former Member of Parliament and former member of the Welsh Assembly. He describes himself as a politician belonging to the “traditional left” who had “spent his life looking for a socialist progressive party”. He was a member of the Labour Party until 2004, then joining Forward Wales

Post 9/11 – From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2003: Marco, a character on “Degrassi: The Next Generation” played by Adamo Ruggiero (second from right in photo below), came out of the closet in conjunction with a two-part episode titled “Pride.” (h/t Quist)

2009 – President Barack Obama signs into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998), 21, was tortured and killed in Laramie, Wyo., because he was gay. Byrd  (May 2, 1949 – June 7, 1998), a 49-year-old black man, was chained to the back of a truck and dragged to death in Jasper, Texas. The hate crimes prevention law requires the FBI to track hate crimes based on gender and gender identity, and gives the Department of Justice the power to prosecute crimes motivated by the victim’s race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

2009, Germany -The first openly gay member of the German government, Guido Westerwelle (27 December 1961 – 18 March 2016) takes office as Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister to Angela Merkel. He was a German politician who served as Foreign Minister in the second cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel and as Vice Chancellor of Germany from 2009 to 2011, being the first openly gay person to hold any of these positions. He was also the chairman of the Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP) from May 2001 until he stepped down in 2011. A lawyer by profession, he was a member of the Bundestag from 1996 to 2013. On 20 July 2004, Westerwelle attended Angela Merkel’s 50th birthday party accompanied by his partner, Michael Mronz. It was the first time he had attended an official event with his partner and this was considered his public coming-out. The couple registered their partnership on 17 September 2010 in a private ceremony in Bonn. Westerwelle died of leukemia at the age of 54.

1728: Charles Genevieve Louise Auguste Andre Timothee d’Eon, also known as the Chevalier d’Éon, was born on this day in Burgundy, France. Embodying a complicated life and legacy, d’Éon performed in drag for the country’s court ball and eventually became part of a network of spies for Louis XV — oftentimes carrying out his missions while dressed as a woman. Having lived such an extensive part of his life as a woman, over time he came to be perceived entirely through this framework. It was only after he died that it was confirmed d’Éon was, in fact, biologically male.

1940 – Althea Garrison (born October 7, 1940)is born. She is an Americanpoliticianfrom Boston, Massachusetts who was elected as a Republican to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1992 and served one term from 1993 to 1995. Both before and after Garrison’s successful bid for office, she ran unsuccessfully in multiple elections for the state legislature and Boston City Council, as a Republican, Democrat, or independent, which has resulted in her being described in the media as a “perennial candidate.” Garrison is also known as the first transgender or transsexual person to be elected to a state legislature in the United States.

1943 – Famed author Marguerite Radclyffe Hall (12 August 1880 – 7 October 1943) passes away. Hall’s novel The Well of Loneliness was banned in several countries because of lesbian content.

“Rock ‘n’ Roll Revue,” a compilation of made-for-television short films featuring Duke Ellington, Nat “King” Cole, Lionel Hampton, Ruth Brown, the Clovers, Dinah Washington, Louis Bellson, Big Joe Turner, Martha Davis, Nipsey Russell, and the Delta Rhythm Boys, opened in U.S. movie theaters.

October 7, 1957

Little Richard‘s “Keep A Knockin’, featuring the wailing sax of Grady Gaines, enters the Billboard Top 40 on its way to #8 during a twelve week chart run. It was the seventh time Richard had reached the Pop chart in the last two years.

1959 – Russell Wolden, running for mayor of San Francisco as a Democrat, accuses the incumbent of welcoming and collaborating with the city’s “sex deviates.” His tactic backfires: the city’s newspapers accuse him of irresponsible mudslinging, and he loses in the next month’s elections.

1959 – Pillow Talk, starring Doris Day, the closeted gay actor Rock Hudson (November 17, 1925 – October 2, 1985), and the straight actor everyone thought was gay Tony Randall, opens in theaters and becomes the 2nd highest grossing film of the 1950’s.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1964: Walter Jenkins, Lyndon B. Johnson’s top aide, was arrested for having sex in the men’s bathroom of his local YMCA just blocks from the White House. Married with a wife and children, Jenkins rocked both the Johnson administration and public perception with this high-visibility scandal.

1967 – The Advocate begins publication. The magazine is the oldest and largest LGBT publication in the United States and the only surviving one of its kind that was founded before the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, an incident that is generally credited as the beginning of the LGBT rights movement.

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

1974

Barry Manilow released the first single of his career–“Mandy”.

1976: Elton John came out as bisexual in an interview with “Rolling Stone” magazine. Though he now identifies as gay, his admission of bisexuality initially negatively impacted his career, with many fans calling him a pervert and boycotting the purchase of his albums.

He is an English singer, pianist, and composer, and has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums to date. He has received five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards – winning two awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the first Brits Icon in 2013 for his “lasting impact on British culture“, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, a Disney Legends award, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004. He has been heavily involved in the fight against AIDS since the late 1980s. He  has been openly gay since 1988, entered into a civil partnership with David Furnish on 21 December 2005, and after same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in 2014, wed Furnish on 21 December 2014. He continues to be a champion for LGBT social movements worldwide.

Blogger Nina Notes: the Dyke March was in the era of Take Back the Night Marches by heterosexual women, and that the pride/protest parades were gay male centric. in the current decade, trans have exiled lesbians from our own march and pride, as well as what are supposed to be the LGBTQ2 qmunity. The characteristics for which heterosexuals oppressed us are not hate crimes against trans, who cotton ceiling fetishize lesbians while offering cloths from heterosexuality.

1982

The musical “Cats” opened at the Wintergarden Theatre. In 1997 the show became the longest running show in Broadway history.

1983 – The first explicitly LGBT internet newsgroup was founded by Steve Dyer called soc.mots. The abbreviation “motss” stood for “members of the same sex,” an unflashy acronym that would make it less of a potential target for censorship. University of Colorado–Boulder professor Amy Goodloe, who started many lesbian Usenet groups as well as found and run lesbian.org in 1995, calls soc.motss the first explicitly LGBTQ newsgroup—and possibly the first explicitly LGBTQ international space of any kind.

1986 – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors outlaws the sale and use of “poppers” (amyl nitrate).

1987 – A US Justice Department report declared the most frequent victims of hate crimes are gays, lesbians, and bisexuals.

1989

The Pet Shop Boys owned the top U.K. album with The Seeds of Love

“Cherish” by Madonna was the new #1 song on the Adult Contemporary chart..

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1993: Annie on My Mind and All-American Boys, two books with predominately gay themes, were at the center of a public book burning in Kansas City, Missouri. The burning was initiated by a donation of the books to a large number of high schools in the area, resulting in their subsequent banning within several school districts. The novels would go on to become the subject of a First Amendment lawsuit two years later, culminating in the return of the books to school shelves.

Blogger Nina Notes: Annie on my Mind was the first novel I read knowing it was a lesbian novel.

1993 – The AFL-CIO unanimously approves a resolution to actively oppose attempts to repeal gay rights laws. The vote was held at the labor union’s biennial convention in San Francisco.

1995

Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA attended the premiere of their new musical Kristina Fran Duvemala at the Storan Theatre in Malmö, Sweden.

1996 – 250 students in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania walked out of class to protest the school board’s passage of a “pro-family” resolution which banned positive discussion of homosexuality.

1996: Following a conservative Christian majority takeover of the school board in Elizabethtown, Penn., in 1996, officials passed a “pro-family” resolution in regards to education, stating, “the traditional family is under relentless attack by those who want to redefine family to include homosexual and lesbian couples and by those who want to indoctrinate children in pro-homosexual propaganda against their parents’ wishes.” In protest, approximately 250 students simultaneously walked out of their classes on Oct. 7.

2004

Melissa Etheridge announced that she was cancelling her tour to undergo surgery and treatment for breast cancer.

2005

Boy George of Culture Club was arrested after police found over 3.5 grams of cocaine in his New York City apartment.

2009

Barbra Streisand surprised many music industry watchers when she topped the Billboard Hot 200 for the ninth time with her latest release, “Love Is the Answer”. The CD extended Streisand’s lead as the female act with the most chart toppers in the history of the Billboard Hot 200. Nielsen SoundScan reported the unit sold 180,000 copies during its first week of release.

2013

Before the 1900s to The Suffragettes

1791: France adopted The French Penal Code of 1791, marking it as the first Western European country to decriminalize same-sex acts. (h/t Quist)

1851 – Charity Bryant (May 22, 1777– October 6, 1851) dies and is interred with her lover of 44 years, Sylvia Drake, in Weybridge Hill Cemetery, Addison County, Vermont. This couple is most strongly documented in historian Rachel Hope Cleves‘ 2014 book Charity and Sylvia: A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America. Charity was an American business owner and writer. She was a diarist and wrote acrostic poetry. Because there is extensive documentation for the shared lives of Bryant and her partner, Sylvia Drake, their diaries, letters and business papers have become an important part of the archive in documenting the history of same-sex couples.

October 6, 1889

The Moulin Rouge in Paris opened its doors to the public for the first time. The cabaret is best known as the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance.

1928 – The New York Timesreported that George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells had protested the seizure of the lesbian novel by Radfclyffe Hall, The Well of Loneliness, by English customs agents. The novel had been published in France and was being imported into England.

1963 –Judy Garland sings with Barbra Streisand on Judy’s variety show. It is their one and only performance together. Neither are lesbian but both are gay icons.

1968: A group of 12 people congregated for the first meeting of the Metropolitan Community Church in Huntington Park, California. Founded by Rev. Troy Perry, who held the first meeting in his living room, the religious organization centralizes its ministry efforts around the LGBT community.

October 6, 1972

During sessions at RCA Studios, New York City, David Bowie recorded ‘The Jean Genie’, which became the lead single from his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. The track spent 13 weeks in the UK charts, peaking at No.2, making it Bowie’s biggest hit to date. The line “He’s so simple minded, he can’t drive his module” would later give the band Simple Minds their name.

1972 – Antonio Molina (c. 1939–1991)and William “Billie” Ert (c. 1942–1976)marry in Houston. Ert, a drag queen, and Molina, a shipping clerk, received the license through having Ert dress in drag; the county clerk’s office did not ask for their genders and issued them a marriage license, which they used to marry one day later. At that time, homosexuality was illegal in Texas. Although it was later declared null and void by the Texas Attorney General after a long legal battle, the union made international headlines and became a media sensation. The failed lawsuit sparked Texas legislation that specifically defined marriage as between a man and a woman, which it had not yet done, and was seen as a large setback for LGBT rights in the United States. After the wedding, Ert was fired from his job as a wig salesman, but continued to perform full-time as Mr. Vikki Carr in local nightclubs. The media storm prompted the real Vikki Carr to meet Ert and Molina on CBS in Houston in November 1972, with Ert in drag.

October 6, 1973

Cher started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Half-Breed’, the singers second US No.1. The single didn’t chart in the UK.

1973, Canada – In Quebec City the first pan-Canadian conference of gay organizations is hosted by Centre humanitaire d’aide de libération

1989, Mexico – The Permanent Revolution Circle ZYANYA of Lesbian Feminists organizes this first three-day forum at the School of Economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.


1989 – In reaction to a small, peaceful protest against federal neglect of people with AIDS, 200 San Francisco police officers rioted in the Castro neighborhood, beating protesters and passersby, sweeping seven city blocks of all pedestrians, and placing thousands in homes and business under house arrest for the duration. 

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1990

George Michael’s masterpiece Listen Without Prejudice moved from 22 to 5.

1997 – Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain is published in this week’s issue of The New Yorker. The story, later turned into a hit movie, depicts the complex romantic and sexual relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1981. In 2007, the composer Charles Wuorinen approached Proulx with the idea of turning her short story “Brokeback Mountain” into an opera. The opera of the same name with a libretto by Proulx herself premiered January 28, 2014 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, to mixed reviews.

1997 – The US Supreme Court refused to hear a case filed by Sandy Nelson, a reporter who was demoted because she refused to stop her off-duty campaigning in support of a gay rights initiative in Washington. The Washington Supreme Court had ruled that a law barring discrimination in employment for political views did not apply to newspapers.

1998: Matthew Shepard was tragically attacked, pistol whipped, tied to a fence and left to die. He would later succumb to his injuries in a Ft. Collins, Colorado hospital. He would die of his injuries at a hospital in Ft Collins, Colorado on Oct. 12th. Perpetrators Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were arrested shortly after the attack and charged with first degree murder following Shepard’s death. Significant media coverage was given to the killing and what role Shepard’s sexual orientation might have played as a motive in the commission of the crime. The prosecutor argued that McKinney’s murder of Shepard was premeditated and driven by greed. McKinney’s defense counsel countered that he had only intended to rob Shepard, but had killed him in a rage when Shepard made a sexual advance towards him. McKinney’s girlfriend told police that he had been motivated by anti-gay sentiment, but later recanted her statement, saying that she had lied because she thought it would help him. Both McKinney and Henderson were convicted of the murder and each sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.

1998 – The Ford Foundation gave a $100,000 grant to the United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches for its programs targeting at-risk gay and lesbian youth.

1999 – Donna Brazile (born December 15, 1959), an out lesbian, becomes Al Gore’s campaign manager. She is an American author and political analyst. She is a member of the Democratic Party, briefly serving as the interim chairperson for the Democratic National Committee in spring 2011, and assumed that role again in July 2016, until February 2017. She was the first African American to direct a major presidential campaign, acting as campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000. She has also worked on several presidential campaigns for Democratic candidates, including Jesse Jackson and Walter Mondale–Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, and for Dick Gephardt in the 1988 Democratic primary. In 1999, The New York Times Magazine described Brazile as an LGBT activist who served on the board of the Millennium March on Washington. The magazine said she is “highly protective of her privacy” and called her “openly ambiguous” about her sexual orientation. Brazile is described as “openly lesbian” in the 2002 book Gay and Lesbian Americans and Political Participation: A Reference Handbook.

Before the 1900s to The Suffragettes

1513: Spanish conquistador Vasco Nunez de Balboa discovers a community of cross-dressing males in present-day Panama and, according to reports, feeds at least 40 of them to his dogs.

1726, France – Diplomat, spy and soldier Chevalier d’Eon (5 October 1728 – 21 May 1810), who lived his first 49 years as a man and her last 33 years as a woman, is born in Tonnerre Burgundy, France. Doctors who examined d’Éon’s body after death discovered “male organs in every respect perfectly formed” but also feminine characteristics.

1840 – John Addington Symonds (5 October 1840 – 19 April 1893) is born. He is one of the earliest scholars of gay and lesbian issues. Symonds assisted Havelock Ellis in the writing of Sexual Inversion. A cultural historian, he was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies of writers and artists. Although he married and had a family, he was an early advocate of male love (homosexuality) which he believed could include pederastic as well as egalitarian relationships, referring to it as l’amour de l’impossible (love of the impossible). He also wrote much poetry inspired by his homosexual affairs.

1943 –Lani Ka’ahumanu (born October 5, 1943) is a bisexual and feminist writer and activist and a frequent speaker on sexuality issue. She is the co-author of the book Bi Any Other Name. Lani serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Bisexuality.

21 year old Paul Evans reaches the Billboard chart for the first time with a novelty song called “Seven Little Girls” (sittin’ in the back seat, kissin’ and huggin’ with Fred). Along with his own recording career, Evans wrote many hits for other artists, including Bobby Vinton’s “Roses Are Red” and The Kalin Twins “When”.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1961 – The movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, written by openly gay Truman Capote (September 30, 1924 – August 25, 1984) and adapted for the screen by George Axelrod, opens in theaters.

1969 – The Washington Blade publishes its first issue. At that time it was called The Gay Blade and contained hard hitting journalism and gay activism.

October 5, 1973

Elton John released his seventh studio album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Under the working titles of Vodka and Tonics and Silent Movies, Talking Pictures, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to the album in two and a half weeks, with John composing most of the music in three days while staying at the Pink Flamingo Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road has now sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is his best-selling studio album.

1974

Olivia Newton-John had her first chart topping album with “If You Love Me, Let Me Know”, which contained her third US number one single, “I Honestly Love You”. Elton John remained at #5 with Caribou

1979

Queen released the single “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.

1985

2010: Court of First Instance of Hong Kong dismissed a judicial review in W v. Registrar of Marriages filed by a transsexual person, which concerned the constitutionality of marriage legislation and the interpretation of the “one man and one woman” clause.

2011: California Governor Jerry Brown signs Seth’s Law, requiring school districts across the state have a uniform process for dealing with complaints about bullying and mandating that school personnel intervene, when safe to do so, to stop bullying.

Before the 1900s to The Suffragettes

1890 – Dr. Alan L. Hart, (October 4, 1890 – July 1, 1962), an American tuberculosis specialist, becomes one of the first female-to-male transsexuals to undergo hysterectomy and gonadectomy for the relief of gender dysphoria. Named Alberta Lucille Hart at birth, Hart lives the rest of his life as a man following the surgery.

1913 – E.M. Forster (1 January 1879 – 7 June 1970) finished writing his novel Maurice which is about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. It would not be published until 1971, after Forster’s death, at the request of the author. It was published by W.W. Norton.

Just days after recording what would be her biggest hit, 27 year old Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose at Hollywood’s Landmark Hotel . “Me and Bobby McGee” would reach number one in early 1971, her highest chart success since “Piece Of My Heart” with Big Brother And The Holding Company in 1968.  Joplin had the posthumous 1971 US No.1 single ‘Me And Bobby McGee’, and the 1971 US No.1 album ‘Pearl’. She was known as “The Queen of Psychedelic Soul” and as “Pearl” to her friends, Joplin remains one of the top-selling musicians in the United States, with over 15.5 million albums sold in the USA.

1971: W.W. Norton publishes E.M. Forster’s Maurice, written in 1913, but dedicated by Forster “to a happier year.”

1974:  John Water’s Female Trouble opens, which not only gives us Divine complaining about not getting cha-cha heels for Christmas, it also contains the following piece of advice from Aunt Ida, “Oh, honey, I’d be so happy if you turned nelly. Queers are just better. I’d be so proud of you was a fag and had a nice beautician boyfriend. I’d never have to worry. 1983: In a landmark move, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) voted to support gay rights legislation. An excerpt from the resolution reads, “We in the labor movement don’t believe that civil rights is a special interest. It’s all our interest. It’s the interest of all of us to ensure that equality and freedom is extended to all the citizens of our country.”

1985: 

West Germany elects its first openly gay member of parliament. Herbert Rusche, a German politician and LGBT activist, became the first openly gay individual to be voted onto the German Parliament. A member of the Green Party, he would go on to serve for two years in the position. He also co-founded Homo Heidelbergensis in 1972, the first openly gay organization in the city. (h/t Quist)

UK – The Labour Party Annual Conference approves a resolution calling for the end of all legal discrimination against lesbians and gay men.

1970 Bisexual singer Janis Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970)–listened to the instrumental track for “Buried Alive In The Blues” at Sunset Studios, intending to record the vocal for her album Pearl on October 5 – dies. She was an American rock, soul and blues singer and songwriter, and one of the most successful and widely-known female rock stars of her era.After releasing three albums, she died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. 1973: Dr. Howard Brown, former New York City Health Administrator, made history when he came out of the closet in a speech in front of 600 colleagues. He later became the director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Brown’s tenure as a gay activist proved brief. Plagued by coronary disease, he suffered a second heart attack on February 1, 1975 and died at the age of fifty. His estate published his autobiography, Familiar Faces, Hidden Lives, a book that also contains anecdotal stories of discrimination experienced by other gay men throughout America. In 1973, most Americans commonly viewed gay men as effeminate narcissists too disturbed to be respectable members of society. Brown helped change that image. The discovery that a distinguished public figure, the very epitome of respectability as a physician, could also be a homosexual gave the cause of gay liberation a tremendous boost. In 1974 an alternative health center, specializing in sexually transmitted diseases, and catering to gay men and lesbians, was opened in Chicago as the Howard Brown Memorial Clinic (now known as Howard Brown Health Center). It has since become the premier Midwest health center specializing in the medical and psychosocial needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

1997 – Paul Bradford Cain, a 26 year-old champion kickboxer, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder of gay scientist Dr. Stanley Keith Runcorn (19 November 1922 – 5 December 1995). In a statement before his sentencing, Cain claimed he was the true victim because Runcorn made a pass at him. The judge disagreed, saying to Cain “I hope you rot in hell because what you did was callous and cruel.” Runcorn was a British physicist whose paleomagneticreconstruction of the relative motions of Europe and America revived the theory of continental drift and was a major contribution to plate tectonics.

1997, Canada – An Ontario court rules that the province’s Insurance Act had to include same-sex couples in the definition of spouse.


1997, UK – Gay historian and Shakespeare scholar A. L. Rowse (4 December 1903 – 3 October 1997) dies at age 93 in southwest England. He had suffered a stroke the year before. He  was a British author and historian. Diary excerpts published in 2003 reveal that “he was an overt even rather proud homosexual in a pre-Wolfenden age, fascinated by young policemen and sailors, obsessively speculating on the sexual proclivities of everyone he meets.” His most controversial book (at the time of publication) was on the subject of human sexuality: Homosexuals In History (1977).

According to new scientific research, Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ was found to be the catchiest song ever written. 1849, Benin –  Explorer Frederick Forbes arrives in the Kingdom of Dahomey (1600-1894) where he saw thousands of Amazons. Amazon tribes have existed in multiple time periods and continents, characterized as female-bodied with traditionally male traits. Forbes wrote “Dahomey and the Dahomans” for further reference.

1650 – The Plymouth colony court found Sara Norman guilty of lewd behavior on a bed with Mary Hammon. She was given a warning and ordered to publicly acknowledge her unchaste behavior. The death penalty in Plymouth applied only to sex between men. Sarah White Norman and Mary Vincent Hammon were prosecuted for “lewd behavior with each other upon a bed”; their trial documents are the only known record of sex between female English colonists in North America in the 17th century. Hammon was only admonished, perhaps because she was younger than sixteen, but in 1650 Norman was convicted and required to acknowledge publicly her “unchaste behavior” with Hammon, as well as warned against future offenses. This may be the only conviction for lesbianism in American history.

1987 – Commissioner John Markl of Traverse City Michigan resigns after Cindy and Dean Robb organize a petition campaign to demand that he be recalled after making homophobic remarks. The couple called his resignation a victory for civil and human rights. According to Dean Robb, nearly all of the volunteers he and his wife organized to get signatures were heterosexual.

1999: California Governor Gray Davis signed three pro-gay bills into legislation. One of these bills was titled the “The California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000,” which sought to legally incorporate LGBT-inclusive education into public schools.

Ives stressed that the Order was to be an ascetic movement, not to be used as a forum for men to meet men for sex although he accepted a degree of ‘passionate sensuality’ could take place. He also believed that love and sex between men was a way to undermine the rigid class system as a true form of democracy.The society is named after the location of the battle where the Sacred Band of Thebes was finally annihilated in 338 BC. In 1914, Ives, together with Edward Carpenter, Magnus Hirschfeld, Laurence Housman and others, founded the British Society for the Study of Sex Psychology. At his death in 1950, George Ives left a large archive covering his life and work between 1874 and 1949. The papers were bought in 1977 by the Harry Ransom Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

1953, Germany – Klaus Wowereit (born 1 October 1953) is a German politician, member of the SPD(Social Democratic Party), and was the Governing Mayor of Berlin from October 2001 to  December 2014. He served as President of the Bundesrat (the fourth highest office in Germany) in 2001-02. His SPD-led coalition was re-elected in the 2006 elections.He was also sometimes mentioned as a possible SPD candidate for the Chancellorship of Germany (Kanzlerkandidatur) in the next German federal election, but that never materialized. Wowereit’s civil partner, Jörn Kubicki, is a neurosurgeon. They have been in a relationship since 1993.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

October 1, 1962

Brian Epstein signs his management contract with The Beatles. John Lennon and Ringo Starr signed for themselves and Harold Harrison and James McCartney do so on behalf of their underage sons. The agreement gave Epstein a 25% cut of the group’s earnings provided that they made more than $400 each per week.

A new talent on the scene, Barbra Streisand, signed a recording contract with Columbia Records.  Although it was for a modest sum, Streisand had creative control of her music.

Feminist, Gay Liberation and Lesbian Separatists: Civil Rights

1971 – Connecticut becomes the second state to abolish its laws prohibiting homosexual acts by consenting adults. Donna Burkett and Manonia Evans, a lesbian couple, attempted to apply for a marriage license at the Office of the Milwaukee County Clerk in Wisconsin, only to have their application denied by County Clerk Thomas Zablocki. The refusal sparked a historic lawsuit, Burkett vs. Zablocki, in which they claimed the denial of a marriage license deprived them of Constitutional due process and equal protection. Though the case was eventually dismissed, it was one of the first prominent battles in the war for same-sex marriage in America, a war LGBT people are still fighting today.

1971 – African Americans Donna Burkett, 25, and Manonia Evans, 21, apply for a marriage license in Wisconsin but the application is refused by the clerk. The two women file a lawsuit but the suit is dismissed. They have a wedding without a license on December 25, 1971.

October 1, 1976

David Bowie begins a three year hiatus from music by moving to West Berlin in an attempt to resolve some personal problems.

1977

Elton John became the first musician to be honoured in New York City’s Madison Square Hall Of Fame and  holds the all-time record with 62 performances at the Garden.

1981 – The first issue of “The Newsletter” for lesbian and bisexual women is published in North Carolina.

1982 – Glenn Burke, (November 16, 1952 – May 30, 1995) comes out in an interview in Inside Sports. He was a Major League Baseball (MLB) player for the Los Angeles Dodgersand the Oakland Athletics from 1976 to 1979. Burke was the first and only MLB player to come outas gayto teammates and team owners during his professional career and the first to publicly acknowledge it. He died from AIDS-related causes in 1995.

1983

1986 – The Roman Catholic Church issues Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger’s “Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons.” In the document, Ratzinger clarifies the Church’s condemnation of the “homosexual inclination” as a “tendency toward an intrinsic moral evil” and an “objective disorder,” and criticizes Catholics who have been guilty of “an overly benign interpretation of the homosexual condition.”

1987 – The US Senate votes 75-23 to allow the former hospital at Presidio Army base to be used for a regional AIDS treatment facility in order to meet the projected needs of San Francisco. President Reagan said if the bill were passed by the House of Representatives, he would veto it.

1987 – ACT-UP disrupts evangelist Pat Robertson’s formal announcement of his candidacy for the Republican nomination for US President.

1989, Denmark – Axil (3 April 1915 – 29 October 2011) and Eigil Axgil (24 April 1922 – 22 September 1995) became the first gay couple to be legally married in Copenhagen. They had been together for 40 years, 32 of which were under a common last name. Ten other couples were married the same day. In 1989, Denmark became the first nation in the world to recognize registered partnerships for same-sex couples, nearly equal to (opposite-sex) marriage. (They do not include rights to adoption, artificial insemination, or religious wedding ceremonies in state Lutheran Churches.) On 1 October 1989 the Axgils and 10 other Danish couples were married by Tom Ahlberg, the deputy mayor of Copenhagen, in the city hall, accompanied by worldwide media attention. In 2013, Axel Axgil was named by Equality Forum as one of their 31 Icons of the LGBT History Month.

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1991 – U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy (born October 1, 1991) is born. He is an openly gay American freestyle skier.

1991 – Abby Stein (born October 1, 1991) is an Americantransgenderactivist,author, blogger,model, and speaker. She is the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community, and is a direct descendant of Hasidic Judaism’s founder the Baal Shem Tov. In 2015, she founded the first support group nationwide for trans people of OrthodoxJewish background. Stein is also the first woman, and the first openly transgender woman, to have been ordained by an Orthodox institution, having received her rabbinical degree in 2011, before coming out as transgender.She has not worked as a rabbi since at least 2016.

1993, Canada – An Ottawa court ordered the Canadian government to grant a gay federal worker – Brian Mossop – spousal and bereavement benefits equal to those heterosexual employees receive.

1993 – National Public Radio in the U.S. announced it would offer domestic partner medical and dental benefits to employees in same-sex relationships. The policy also included unmarried heterosexual couples.

1994 – Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, creates LGBT history month. He gathers other teachers and community leaders who select October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month.

1994: A coalition of education-based organizations came together in the mid-1990s in order to officially identify October as “LGBT History Month,” a period of celebration and remembrance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identifying individuals. It serves as a designated period of time in which we highlight the journey and progression of LGBT rights from the days of the Stonewall Rebellion through the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and beyond.

1996, Argentina – Buenos Aires police begin a campaign of raids on gay and lesbian clubs and arrests of cross-dressing patrons and transsexuals in an apparent protest against impending gay and lesbian rights measures. 

1999: Marta Alvarez was a lesbian inmate imprisoned in Colombia in the 1990s. She began petitioning for the allowance of same-sex conjugal visits in 1994, arguing that “her rights to personal dignity, integrity, and equality were being infringed upon by the denial to allow her conjugal visits in prison.” The case initially went to trial on October 1, 1999. In a landmark decision for Latin America, the Interamerican Convention on Human Rights ruled that the denial of conjugal visits constituted discrimination based on sexual orientation.
