1847, Germany – Philipp Friedrich Alexander, Prince of Eulenburg and Hertefeld, Count von Sandels (12 February 1847 – 17 September 1921) was a diplomat and composer of Imperial Germany who achieved considerable influence as the closest friend of Wilhelm II. He was the central member of the so-called Liebenberg Circle, a group of artistically minded German aristocrats within Wilhelm’s entourage. Eulenburg played an important role in the rise of Bernhard von Bülow, but fell from power in 1907 due to the Harden–Eulenburg affair when he was accused of homosexuality.

Bet van Beeren – Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She was a flamboyant bar owner in Amsterdam. She named the bar Café ’t Mandje (The Basket Café) because her mother brought the food in every day in a basket. Van Beeren was openly lesbian and her bar catered to lesbians and gays, as long as there was no kissing, which would have violated the vice laws and caused her to lose her liquor license. Her clientele included artists, intellectuals, pimps, prostitutes, and sailors. She often dressed in a sailor suit or leathers, and entertained her customers with singing and dancing. Making a lot of money from the pub, she became known for her charity works, helping the poor, children, and the elderly. During WWII, she allowed the bar to be used as an arms depot for the Dutch resistance. Her bar was off limits to Nazi troops because it was considered a red-light establishment. She hung neckties and souvenirs from patrons from the ceiling and held dances on Queen’s Day, where same-sex couples could dance together. Van Beeren died of liver disease (it was told that she drank up to 40 bottles of beer a day) in July 1967. She was laid in state on the billiard table of the bar for several days before being buried. Greet, van Beeren’s younger sister continued to run the pub until 1982. Shortly before Greet died, she sold it to her niece, Diana van Laar. Van Laar completed a renovation of the pub and reopened it on April 2, 2008. In 2017, a bridge was renamed on the pub’s 90th anniversary to honor van Beeren, representing her building of bridges between diverse groups. The night prime-time special entitled “Cher” aired with guests Elton John, Flip Wilson and Bette Midler.

1976: Gay actor, Sal Mineo, is stabbed to death in the garage of his West Hollywood apartment building at 8569 Holloway Drive. He is only 37 years old. The crime goes unsolved for a number of years until his murderer, Lionel Ray Williams, is caught and convicted.

Mineo known for his performance as John “Plato” Crawford opposite James Dean in the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955). He was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his roles in Rebel Without a Cause and Exodus (1960). 2004 – Under the direction of Mayor Gavin Newsom, the City of San Francisco begins performing same-sex marriages, starting with Phyllis Lyon (born November 10, 1924) and Del Martin (May 5, 1921 – August 27, 2008), who had been a couple for 51 years. That marriage was invalidated by the California Supreme Court, but Lyon and Martin married once again on June 16, 2008, a couple of months before Del Martin’s death on August 27, 2008. Over 80 couples were given quick ceremonies. Robin Tyler and Troy Perry (born July 27, 1940) , with attorney Gloria Allred, file a lawsuit for marriage equality shortly after the San Francisco marriages were dissolved. One month later, the cases were consolidated. The marriage equality case actually started in Los Angeles rather than San Francisco.

2006

“The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties” became Barry Manilow’s second Billboard chart topping album. His first was in 1977 with “Barry Manilow Live”.

2007

A full frontal nude photo of Madonna, taken in 1979 before she became famous, sold at auction for $37,500. The black and white picture was taken at a time when Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was a 20-year-old dancer trying to make ends meet in New York.

1513, Panama – Spanish conquistador Vasco Nunez de Balboa discovers a community of cross-dressing males in present-day Panama and, according to reports, feeds at least 40 of them to his dogs.

1698, England – William Minton, a 19 year old servant, is used as bait to entrap Capt. Edward Rigby, the first homosexual victim of entrapment by the Society for the Reformation of Manners. He was tried for sodomy. These Societies were formed in Tower Hamlets, London, in 1690, with their primary object being the suppression of bawdy houses and profanity. A network of moral guardians was set up, with four stewards in each ward of the City of London, two for each parish, and a committee, whose business it was to gather the names and addresses of offenders against morality, and to keep minutes of their misdeeds. By 1699 there were nine such societies, and by 1701 there were nearly 20 in London, plus others in the provinces, all corresponding with one another and gathering information and arranging for prosecutions.

Inspired by Noble, Minnesota state legislator Allan Spear comes out in a newspaper interview. In 1986 Noble and Ellen Ratner formed a LGBT alcohol and drug treatment center in Minneapolis called the Pride Institute. More recently she has worked as a healthcare administrator and a realtor. Noble had a relationship with writer Rita Mae Brown in the 1970s and has since retained privacy regarding her personal life. She lives in Florida

2008 – Strauss v. Horton, a legal challenge to Proposition 8, is filed. Proposition 8, known informally as Prop 8, was a California ballot proposition and a state constitutional amendment passed in the November 2008 California state elections. The proposition was created by opponents of same-sex marriage in advance of the California Supreme Court’s May 2008 appeal ruling, In re Marriage Cases, which followed the short-lived controversy and found the previous ban on same-sex marriage (Proposition 22, 2000) unconstitutional. Proposition 8 was ultimately ruled unconstitutional by a federal court (on different grounds) in 2010, although the court decision did not go into effect until June 26, 2013, following the conclusion of proponents’ appeals.

2009, Viet Nam – Pham le Quynh Tram, born intersex and assigned male at birth, successfully petitions the government for legal recognition as a woman. In 2013, he People’s Committee of the southern province of Binh Phuoc ordered the local Department of Justice to revert to recognizing Tram as a male and to refer to her as Pham Van Hiep, her birth name. In addition to the Department of Justice rescinding Tram’s initial recognition, the officials who first approved it are reportedly ordered to be penalized.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the UK singles chart the Official Charts Company published a chart which lists all the 123 songs that have sold more than a million copies since it began in 1952. Elton John was at No.1 with Candle In The Wind, No.2 was Band Aid with Do They Know It’s Christmas? followed by Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody on 2.36million copies.

1876 – Natalie Clifford Barney (October 31, 1876 – February 2, 1972), American playwright, poet and novelist, is born. She lives as an expatriate in Paris and is known as the Queen of the Paris Lesbians.

1896 – Jazz great and Oscar-nominated actress Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 – September 1, 1977) is born. She was an American singer and actress. Waters frequently performed jazz, big band, and pop music, on the Broadway stage and in concerts, but she began her career in the 1920s singing blues. Waters was the second African American, after Hattie McDaniel, to be nominated for an Academy Award. She was also the first African-American woman to be nominated for an Emmy Award, in 1962. Waters married three times, had no children and was bisexual.She was remarkably open (for her time) about her relationship with dancer Ethel Williams (December 21, 1891-1961).

1968 – Silent film star Ramon Novarro (February 6, 1899 – October 30, 1968) is killed. He was a Mexican film, stage and television actor who began his career in silent films in 1917 and eventually became a leading man and one of the top box office attractions of the 1920s and early 1930s. Novarro was promoted by MGM as a “Latin lover” and became known as a sex symbol after the death of Rudolph Valentino. Novarro was troubled all his life by his conflicted feelings toward his Roman Catholic religion and his homosexuality. His body was found after being brutally murdered by hustler brothers Paul and Tom Ferguson, aged 22 and 17, who called him and offered their services. He had hired prostitutes from an agency to come to his Laurel Canyon home for sex previously, and the Fergusons obtained Novarro’s telephone number from a previous guest.

1969 – Sixty members of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Society for Individual Rights(SIR) stage a protest outside the offices of the San Francisco Examiner in response to another in a series of news articles disparaging LGBT people in San Francisco’s gay bars and clubs. The peaceful protest against the “homophobic editorial policies” of the Examiner turned tumultuous and were later called “Friday of the Purple Hand” and “Bloody Friday of the Purple Hand.” Examiner employees “dumped a bag of printers’ ink from the third story window of the newspaper building onto the crowd.” Some reports state that it was a barrel of ink poured from the roof of the building. The protesters “used the ink to scrawl ‘Gay Power’ and other slogans on the building walls” and stamp purple hand prints “throughout downtown San Francisco” resulting in “one of the most visible demonstrations of gay power.” According to Larry LittleJohn, then president of SIR, “At that point, the tactical squad arrived – not to get the employees who dumped the ink, but to arrest the demonstrators. Somebody could have been hurt if that ink had gotten into their eyes, but the police were knocking people to the ground.”The accounts of police brutality include women being thrown to the ground and protesters’ teeth being knocked out.

1969 – Time magazine runs a cover story entitled, “The Homosexual: Newly Visible, Newly Understood.” The author, Christopher Cory, presents a “case for greater tolerance of homosexuals” yet “emphasized the effeminate side of homosexuality to the exclusion of everyone else,” resulting in a protest at the Time-Life Building on November 12, 1969.

1969: In San Francisco, lesbians and gay men protest homophobic language in the Examiner. Newspaper employees respond by showering the demonstrators with purple ink. Violence ensues.

David Bowie appeared at a Halloween night at the General Gordon, Gravesend, England. The gig lasted about 15 minutes, after Bowie sang ‘Space Oddity’ to everyone’s delight and then dragged a stool on stage, along with a huge book. He then sat and read poems and was booed off stage.

1977, Canada – Halloween brings thousands of queer-bashers to Toronto’s Yonge Street looking for the annual drag parade. Gay representatives meet with police beforehand to try to prevent a crowd from gathering. Operation Jack-o’-Lantern, a gay street patrol, is organized to monitor situation but police do little to control crowd.

1980, Canada – For the first time, Toronto police do not allow queer-bashers and spectators to congregate outside St Charles Tavern to wait for drag queens. Traffic and pedestrians are kept moving with help of large numbers of police officers.

1980 – French-Canadian flight attendant Gaëtan Dugas (February 20, 1953 – March 30, 1984) pays his first known visit to New York City bathhouses. He would later be incorrectly deemed “Patient Zero” for his supposed connection to many early cases of AIDS in the United States. He was a French-Canadian flight attendant who was falsely linked by the CDC directly or indirectly to 40 of the first 248 reported cases of AIDS in the U.S. He was a relatively early HIV patient who once was widely regarded as “patient zero” for AIDS in the United States; his case was later found to have been only one of many that began in the 1970s, according to a September 2016 study published in Nature.

Before the 1900s to The Suffragettes

1884 – Eleanor Roosevelt (October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962) is born. Famed for her work as a human rights activist and for her outspokenness as first lady, Roosevelt was also bisexual. She had long-term relationships with her husband, Franklin, and her dear friend, Lorena Hickock (March 7, 1893 – May 1, 1968). Roosevelt cared deeply about humanity. She once wrote, of the need to save the Jewish people of Europe, “We will be the sufferers if we let great wrongs occur without exerting ourselves to correct them.” She worked to pass anti-lynching legislation. She wrote a column urging congress not to further abrogate the sovereignty of American Indians. She resigned from the DAR when they refused to let opera star Marian Anderson sing in their hall (because Anderson was African-American) and she arranged instead for her to sing at the Lincoln Memorial. She publicly opposed Apartheid long before world sentiment was united about it. She served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. She was one of the most admired women in America in her day. Biographer Blanche Weisen has said that Roosevelt’s bisexuality and her relationship with Lorena Hickock were powerful influences on the human rights work she was so admired for.

1954 – Cleve Jones (born October 11, 1954) is an American AIDS and LGBT rights activist. He conceived the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt which has become, at 54 tons, the world’s largest piece of community folk art as of 2016. In 1983, at the onset of the AIDS pandemic Jones co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation which has grown into one of the largest and most influential People with AIDS advocacy organizations in the United States. Jones conceived the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a candlelight memorial for Harvey Milk in 1985 and in 1987 created the first quilt panel in honor of his friend Marvin Feldman.

1986

Madonna was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the title track from her album. ‘True Blue’ her third UK No.1. The title came from a favorite expression of her then husband Sean Penn and was a direct tribute to him.

1987:

The historic second March On Washington took place, drawing out around 500,000 attendees. Speakers at the event included Rev. Jesse Jackson and actress Whoopi Goldberg. The iconic AIDS memorial quilt was also displayed at this march, stitched together with more than 48,000 individual panels, the majority of which were dedicated to a loved one that had passed away from AIDS complications.

Seventy-five bisexuals march in the 1987 March on Washington For Gay and Lesbian Rights, which was the first nationwide bisexual gathering. The article “The Bisexual Movement: Are We Visible Yet?” by Lani Ka’ahumanu (born October 5, 1943) appeared in the official Civil Disobedience Handbook for the March. It was the first article about bisexuals and the emerging bisexual movement to be published in a national lesbian or gay publication

1988

Coming Out Day was founded in 1988 by Richard Eichberg, a psychologist and Jean O’Leary, a gay rights activist, to raise awareness of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and its civil rights movement. They chose October 11th to mark the anniversary of the second major National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place 1987. With estimates of half a million people participating, it was nearly five times the size of the first march in 1979. National Coming Out Day is observed throughout the U.S. and other countries around the world

More than 1,000 demonstrators in Maryland, led by ACT Up activists, invade the grounds of the Federal Food and Drug Administration to focus attention on the AIDS crisis and to protest the agency’s slow drug approval process. Nearly 150 demonstrators are arrested.

1993 – The US Supreme Court refuses to hear an appeal from a former CIA employee who was fired for acknowledging he was gay.

1997

Elton John went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Candle In The Wind 97’ A re-write of his 1974 hit about Marilyn Monroe. This version was raising funds for the Diana, Princess of Wales charity, following her death in Paris. It went on to become the biggest selling single in the world ever.

Freddie Mercury’s 1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was offered for auction on eBay by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, who had inherited the car from him. The luxury vehicle had not appeared in public since 2002, when it had been used to transport the Bulsara family to the premiere of the Queen stage musical We Will Rock You. It came with a box of Kleenex Mansize tissues left in the car by Freddie.

2009

Barbra Streisand went to No.1 on the US album charts with ‘Love Is the Answer’. Streisand’s ninth No.1 album, making her the only artist to have a number one album in America in five different decades.

National Equality March takes place in Washington, DC

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) headquarters in Washington DC is vandalized by a group called Queers Against Assimilation. They throw pink and black glitter and paint at the building, calling the attack an “act of glamdalvism.”

2010

George Michael was released from Highpoint Prison in Suffolk, England after serving four of an eight week sentence for driving under the influence of drugs. The singer had been arrested after crashing his car into the front of a Snappy Snaps store in Hampstead, North London in July of this year.

2011

The group Queers Against Assimilation vandalized the Human Rights Campaign store in Washington, D.C. The radical activists threw pink and black paint and glitter on the building and left graffiti that read “Quit Leaving Queers Behind.” (h/t Quist)

2011 – Pioneering gay activist Frank Kameny dies (May 21, 1925 – October 11, 2011). Kameny was one of the most significant and iconic figures in the American gay rights movement. In 1957, Kameny was dismissed from his position as an astronomer in the Army Map Service in Washington, D.C. because of his homosexuality, leading him to transform the gay rights movement of the early 1960s.

1849, Benin – Explorer Frederick Forbes arrives in the Kingdom of Dahomey (1600-1894) where he saw thousands of Amazons. Amazon tribes have existed in multiple time periods and continents, characterized as female-bodied with traditionally male traits. Forbes wrote “Dahomey and the Dahomans” for further reference.

1650 – The Plymouth colony court found Sara Norman guilty of lewd behavior on a bed with Mary Hammon. She was given a warning and ordered to publicly acknowledge her unchaste behavior. The death penalty in Plymouth applied only to sex between men. Sarah White Norman and Mary Vincent Hammon were prosecuted for “lewd behavior with each other upon a bed”; their trial documents are the only known record of sex between female English colonists in North America in the 17th century. Hammon was only admonished, perhaps because she was younger than sixteen, but in 1650 Norman was convicted and required to acknowledge publicly her “unchaste behavior” with Hammon, as well as warned against future offenses. This may be the only conviction for lesbianism in American history.

1977: Glenn Burke, the first openly gay man to play in Major League Baseball, invented the high five in front of 46,000 fans at Dodger Stadium. Despite misconceptions that Jason Collins was the first openly gay player in a major pro sport, Burke was reportedly “comfortably out to his teammates and friends” — the press just wasn’t ready for it.

1985: Rock Hudson, a leading Hollywood actor, became the major first celebrity to dies of AIDS-related complications. A friend of Ronald Reagan, Hudson’s death proved to be a catalyst that changed public perception surrounding the AIDS epidemic and the individuals affected by it. Until the actor’s death, the mainstream media had largely ignored the AIDS crisis, with it existing in the realm of public consciousness as the “gay plague.”

1987 – The Minnesota Supreme Court refuses to rule on the constitutionality of the state’s sodomy law, which allows the law to remain on the books.

1987 – Commissioner John Markl of Traverse City Michigan resigns after Cindy and Dean Robb organize a petition campaign to demand that he be recalled after making homophobic remarks. The couple called his resignation a victory for civil and human rights. According to Dean Robb, nearly all of the volunteers he and his wife organized to get signatures were heterosexual.

1990, UK – Metropolitan police met with members of the London direct action group OutRage to discuss their concerns after several actions are directed at UK law enforcement agencies.

1997 – Variety magazine objected to the Motion Picture Association of America’s decision to give the movie Bent an NC-17 rating, pointing out that the sex scenes were far less graphic than heterosexual sex scenes in movies which receive R ratings.

1999: California Governor Gray Davis signed three pro-gay bills into legislation. One of these bills was titled the “The California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000,” which sought to legally incorporate LGBT-inclusive education into public schools.

Hundreds of items related to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix also went under the hammer at the sale.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1967 – The television series N.Y.P.D. was the first series in America to air an episode with a gay theme. It was entitled “Shakedown.” The police track down a man blackmailing gay men, prompting several suicides.

1969 – Unitarian Universalist minister James Stoll (January 18, 1936 – December 8, 1994) is the first ordained minister in the U.S. or Canada to publically come out. He did so at the annual Continental Conference of Student Religious Liberals on September 5, 1969 at the La Foret Conference Center near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He led the effort that convinced the Unitarian Universalist Association to pass the first-ever gay rights resolution, in 1970. He also founded the first counseling center for gays and lesbians in San Francisco, then, in the 1970s, he established the first hospice on Maui. He was president of the San Francisco chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1990s. He died at the age of 58 from complications of heart and lung disease, exacerbated by obesity and a lifelong smoking habit.

Janis Joplin started recording sessions recording a version of the Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster song ‘Me and Bobby McGee’. Joplin, (who was a lover and a friend of Kristofferson’s from the beginning of her career to her death), topped the US singles chart with the song in 1971 after her death, making the song the second posthumous No.1 single in US chart history after ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding.

1975

1987, Netherlands – The Homomonument, a pink granite triangle memorial to LGBT victims of the Nazis, is dedicated in Amsterdam. The Homomonument is a memorial in the center of Amsterdam and commemorates all gay men and lesbians who have been subjected to persecution because of their homosexuality. Opened on September 5, 1987, it takes the form of three large pink triangles made of granite, set into the ground so as to form a larger triangle, on the bank of the Keizersgracht canal near the historic Westerkerk church. The Homomonument was designed to “inspire and support lesbians and gays in their struggle against denial, oppression and discrimination.” It was the first monument in the world to commemorate gays and lesbians who were killed by the Nazis. Later, similar monuments were created in a number of cities all around the world.

1991 – ACT UP activists unfurl a giant condom at the home of N.C. Senator Jesse Helms who opposed sex education and AIDS research funding. Helms wrote the law barring HIV+ people from entering the U.S. That law was repealed in 2012.

1997

Elton John sang an updated version of “Candle In The Wind” at the funeral of England’s Princess Diana at Westminster Abbey in London. The song, which was named “Candle In The Wind ’97” would go on to become one of the top-selling singles of all-time.

Sept 5, 2007 – Principal Genna Suraci starts the school year at the Port Ewen, NY Career & Technical Center uneventfully, like any other school year. Over the summer, she’d officially transitioned from Gary to Genna. The school apparently took in stride their transsexual leader’s transition. Student Kaitlyn Walker, 17, was quoted in the New York Times saying, “It doesn’t matter what happened, it’s the person inside. It’s the same person. It doesn’t really matter if you change the outside.”

An asteroid was named after Freddie Mercury to mark what would have been the singer’s 70th birthday.
