June 27, 1959

“West Side Story” closes at Winter Garden Theater NYC after 734 performances

1964

“People” by Barbra Streisand topped the Easy Listening chart and moved from 8 to 5 on the pop chart

1970

A band called Smile changes it’s name to Queen featuring Freddie Mercury (possibly still known as Freddie Bulsara) on vocals, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and Mike Grose on bass played their first gig at Truro City Hall, Cornwall, England. They were billed as Smile, Brian and Roger’s previous band, for whom the booking had been made originally. Original material at this time included an early version of ‘Stone Cold Crazy’.

The Trans-Continental Pop Festival (better known as the The Festival Express)set off. The tour was unique in that rather than flying to each city, most of the acts travelled on a chartered CN train. The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Buddy Guy Blues Band all travelled together on the train playing shows in Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary.

Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” hit #1, while her album Whitney became the first album by a female singer to debut on Billboard’s chart at #1. she also became the first woman to top the singles chart with four consecutive releases when ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ hit No.1.

Madonna was in concert at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, the opening show in the 19-day North American leg of our world tour.

1995

Circle Jerks release their sixth and final studio album, Oddities, Abnormalities, & Curiosities. It is the band’s first release on a major label, although Mercury Records will go on to drop Circle Jerks after they fail to reach mainstream success.

Beastie Boys were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘To The 5 Boroughs’ the rappers fourth US No.1.

2012

Rihanna is very lucky to escape with her life after being among 300 people evacuated from a motel during a fire in an elevator shaft. It takes ten firefighters to put out the resulting blaze at the Corinthia Hotel in London, where Rihanna was performing at the Hackney Weekend concert.

People magazine reported that Barry Manilow secretly married his manager, Garry Kief, sometime during 2014. The publication’s sources said that Barry and Garry invited “20 to 30 guests” to Manilow’s Palm Springs house under the guise of a luncheon, which turned out to be a wedding ceremony.

Bruce Springsteen canceled a concert in Greensboro, North Carolina to protest the state’s passing of the controversial Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act. Also known as the “bathroom bill”, the Act said that transgender people must use rest rooms associated with the sex noted on their birth certificate.

March 27, 2006

Former Village People policeman Victor Willis was arrested in San Francisco, California, after he disappeared from an ongoing drug and gun trial. Police had charged Willis with being in possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia in July 2005. He would later be sentenced to three years’ probation after he agreed to enter a treatment program.

2012

David Bowie’s landmark album Ziggy Stardust was celebrated with a blue plaque in central London. Former Spandau Ballet star Gary Kemp, unveiled a plaque at the spot where the cover of the 1972 release was shot. The location in Heddon Street, just off Regent Street, is now a pedestrianised area brimming with bars and restaurants.
