BCE to The Suffragettes

1833, UK – Charles George Gordon  (28 January 1833 – 26 January 1885) was born in Woolwich, England. A British military hero he became a martyr at Khartoumn. The American historian Byron Farwell in his 1985 book Eminent Victorian Soldiers strongly implied that Gordon was gay, for instance writing of Gordon’s “unwholesome” interest in the boys he took in to live with him at the Fort House and his fondness for the company of “handsome” young men. Always surrounded by boys and young men, he once told a friend he lacked the courage to act on his impulses because of his religious beliefs. He said he hoped to die in battle to prove his manhood. He got his wish. Gordon never married and is not known to have had a relationship with anyone of the opposite sex or of the same sex.

01-28-1873 – 08-03-1954 Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette) – She was a French novelist nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Her best known work is the novella Gigi (1944). In 1949, it was made into a French film, then in 1951 adapted for the stage with the then unknown Audrey Hepburn in the title role, picked by Colette personally. In 1958, the Hollywood musical starring Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan, with a screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Colette was also a mime, an actress, and a journalist. She was married several times and had a series of relationships with women, notably with Mathilde de Morny, Marquise de Belief (Missy), with whom she sometimes shared the stage. On January 3, 1907, an onstage kiss between Missy and Colette caused a near-riot, and as a result they were no longer able to live together openly, although their relationship continued for another five years. When Colette died, she became the first French woman to be given a state funeral.

1890 – Momma Rose was born Rose Thompson (August 31, 1890 – January 28, 1954). She was the mother of two famous performing daughters: burlesque artist Gypsy Rose Lee and actress and dancer June Havoc. She was  the inspiration for Rose, the lead character of the musical Gypsy. Rose was running a boarding house in New York, referred to by sources of the time as a “seedy boarding house for lesbians,” where she also lived. During this time, Gypsy paid a visit to the house and for some reason a young woman who has been described as Momma Rose’s lover at the time didn’t know Gypsy was her daughter. The woman mistakenly thought Gypsy was making a pass at Rose. Rose and the woman reportedly had a vicious fight and Momma Rose shot her.

01-28-1901 – 03-05-1989 Richmond Barthé – Born in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He was an African-American LGBT pioneer, sculptor, and key figure in the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s. Because he was a gay man who expressed his orientation in his work, he fell into 

obscurity by the 1940s. Much of his art depicted African-American men in sensual poses, often nude. Today his work doesn’t seem that confrontational, but in a racist, sexually uptight America in the middle of the last century, it is remarkable that his work received the acclaim that it did. In 1935, his work was included in an exhibit of African-American art at the New York Museum of Modern Art. In 1975, he moved to Pasadena, California, and a year later curators at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art included his work. The attention to his work, the growing respect of a younger audience to artists of the Harlem Renaissance, and the support of his friends brought stability into his life. He lived out his later years as a treasured part of the art community.

01-28-1952 — 03-10-2015   Richard Glatzer – Born in Flushing, Queens. He grew up in Westbury, Long Island, and

 Livingston, New Jersey. Glatzer was an American writer and director. He entered the film world in the mid-1980s, working on TV shows such as Divorce Court, The Osbournes, and America’s Next Top Model. Glatzer taught screenwriting at the School of Visual Arts in New  York City. He married writer and director Wash Westmoreland in September 2013. The couple were a married writing and directing team based in Los Angeles who made an eclectic set of independent movies. Their last film, Still Alice, with Julianne Moor, Alec Baldwin, and Kristen Stewart, premiered at Toronto 2014 and was considered the surprise hit of the festival. Sony Pictures Classics released the film in December 2014. In 2015, Glatzer died of complications from ALS.

01-28-1969   Mo Rocca (Maurice Alberto) – Born in Washington, D.C. He is an American actor, director, writer, journalist, comedian, and political satirist. Rocca was On Out’s 3rd Annual 100 Most Eligible 

Bachelors (2013) and November of the same year, Rocca came out of the closet, saying it made him finally feel “comfortable.” Speaking to The Six Pack in a podcast interview, he said, “I’m just more comfortable with myself now. It’s taken me until 42 to begin to feel this way.” He is a CBS Sunday Morning contributor and a panelist on NPR. He’s has worked as a contributor to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for 5 years, and also was a correspondent for The Tonight Show.

1976 – Formation of Gay American Indians (GAI) is reported in the Advocate. Founding members are Barbara May Cameron (May 22, 1954 – Feb. 12, 2002 and Randy Burns. GAI is the first Native gay and lesbian organization in the US and contributes to the rise of the Two Spirit movement. By the end of the twentieth century, GAI had grown to over 600 members and spawned other gay American Indian groups in San Diego, Toronto and New York City under the name “Two-Spirit People.” GAI has documented berdache roles in over 130 Native American tribes. Burns’ own Northern Paiute tradition has traditional berdache roles: tuva’sa (male) moroni noho (female).

01-28-1978   Big Freedia (b. Freddie Ross Jr.) – Born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is an American Rapper known for his work in the New Orleans genre of hip hop called bounce music. Freedia identifies himself as 

a gay man and has stated that he does not care which pronoun is used to refer to him. In 2011, he was named Best Emerging Artist and Best Hip-hop/Rap Artist in January’s Best of the Beat Awards and was nominated for the 2011 22nd GLAAD Media Awards. He operates an interior design in New Orleans. Freedia has stated, “I am not transgendered, I am just a gay male…I wear women’s hair and carry a purse, but I am a man.” He also stated, “I love my feminine side. She is the diva in me.”

Radio station WDHA, 105.5 in New Jersey, claims to be the first US station to play music from a compact disc.

1984

Despite being banned by Radio 1 and the BBC for its suggestive lyrics, “Relax” by the British dance group Frankie Goes to Hollywood climbs to the top of the UK singles chart. The objectionable words were “Relax, don’t do it, when you want to sock it to it, Relax, don’t do it, when you want to come”. Many other UK commercial radio stations continued to play the record and it stayed at the top for five straight weeks and remained on the chart for a then record forty-two consecutive weeks. Later in the year, the ban would be lifted.

The legendary Nina Simone tells NME she was forced to record her 1978 album Baltimore under duress when she was kidnapped by five men and held in a basement for three days without food or water. She retracts the statement later.

He was an English writer, mathematician, logician,  Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem “Jabberwocky“, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark – all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. 01–27-1879 – 10-30-1943 Beatrice Hastings – Born in Hackney, London, 

England. She was an English writer, poet, and literary critic. She wrote under the pen name of Emily Alice Haigh. Bisexual, she was a friend and lover of writer Katherine Mansfield. In 1943, probably suffering from cancer, she killed herself with gas from a domestic cooker.

1911 – Sarah Aldridge (January 27, 1911 in Rio de Janeiro – January 11, 2006), whose actual name was Anyda Marchant, is born. She was a writer of primarily lesbian popular fiction and a founding partner for Naiad Press in 1973 and A&M Books in 1995. Her first published work was a short story issued by The Ladder.  the periodical released by the Daughters of Bilitis. The fourteen lesbian novels she wrote include All True Lovers, Tottie, A Flight of Angels, The Latecomer, and The Nesting Place. One of the first women to pass the bar in Washington DC, she served at the World Bank as an attorney in the Legal Department for 18 years until retiring in 1972. She met legal secretary Muriel Inez Crawford (April 21, 1914 – June 7, 2006) in 1947 with whom she lived until Aldridge’s death. Aldridge died at her home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on January 11, 2006. She was 94.^[4] She was awarded the Golden Crown Literary Society Trailblazer Award posthumously in June 2007.

He would later state: “If God can save an old homosexual like me, he can save anybody.” Of course he’s also quoted as saying: “If there was anything I loved better than a big penis, it was a bigger penis.”

1960 — Olympic diver Greg Louganis (born January 29, 1960) is born. He s an American Olympic diver, LGBT activist, and author who won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, on both the springboard and platform. He is the only male and the second diver in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. He has been called both “the greatest American diver” and “probably the greatest diver in history.” Louganis’ ancestry is Samoan and European-American. He overcame a stutter as a child and struggled with dyslexia, asthma and depression.  Six months before the 1988 Olympics, Louganis was diagnosed with HIV. Louganis publicly came out as gay in a pre-taped announcement shown at the opening ceremony of the 1994 Gay Games. He announced his engagement to his partner, paralegal Johnny Chaillot, in People magazine, in June 2013. The two were married on October 12, 2013.

01-27-1965   Alan Cumming – Born in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. He is a Scottish-American actor, comedian, singer, writer, filmmaker, and activist.

 Cumming’s has acted in numerous films, television shows, and plays. On Broadway, he appeared as the master of ceremonies in Cabaret, for which he won a tony Award. He appeared on The Good Wife, for which he was nominated for three PrimeTime Emmy Awards. In March 2005, Cumming received the Vito Russo Award at the 16th Annual GLAAD Median Awards for outstanding contributions toward eliminating homophobia. In the same year, he was presented with the HRC’s Humanitarian Award in San Francisco for his LGBT public stance. Cummings lives in Manhattan with his husband, illustrator Grant Shaffer, and their two dogs. The couple legally married in New York on January 7, 2012.

Likely asexual, Tesla never married, explaining that his chastity was very helpful to his scientific abilities. 01-26-1908 – 07-28-1990 Jill Esmond – Born in London, England. She was an English stage and screen actress. Esmond was the first wife of Laurence Olivier. They were married from 1930 to 1940. The couple had one son. Esmond made her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Skin Game (1931). She also appeared in two Broadway plays, Private Lives (1931) and The Green Bay Tree (1933). Olivier stated, “The marriage was a pretty crass mistake. She had admitted to me that she was in love elsewhere and could never love me as completely as I would wish.” Esmond was a lesbian and because it was socially unacceptable in her lifetime, it was rarely mentioned. After divorcing Olivier, she lived the rest of her life with another woman.

She is an out lesbian.

01-26-1944 Angela Davis – Born in Birmingham, Alabama. She is an American political activist, academic scholar, and author. 

During the 1960s, she was a prominent counterculture activist leader. One of her prime interests is to abolish the prison-industrial complex. From 1969 to 1991, she was a member of the Communist Party USA, and had close relations with the Black Panther Party. Now retired, she was a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Davis was prosecuted for conspiracy involving the 1970 armed take-over of a Marin County, California courtroom. She was aquitted by an all white jury on June 4, 1972. She had spent sixteen months incarcerated. Davis is a supporter of Black Lives Matter. She was a co-chair of the Women’s March on Washington on January, 21, 2017. She is an out lesbian. As of 2020, Davis is living with her life partner Gina Dent, a fellow humanities scholar and intersectional feminist researcher at UC Santa Cruz. In 2020, she was listed as the 1971 “Woman of the Year” in Time magazine’s “100 Women of the Year” edition, which selected iconic women over the 100 years since women’s suffrage in the United States of America from 1920. In 2020, she was included on Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

01-26-1963 — 03-09-1995   Scott Amedure – Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was an American murder victim. On March 6, 1995, during a taping of The Jenny Jones Show (a television talk show), Amedure revealed that he was attracted to an acquaintance, Jonathan Schmitz (born July 18, 1970) who lived near him in Lake Orion, Michigan. Until the taping, Schmitz didn’t know who would be revealed as his secret admirer. During the segment,

 Amedure was encouraged by Jones to share his fantasies about Schmitz, after which Schmitz was brought onstage. In response to Amedure’s disclosure, Schmitz laughed, then stated that he was “definitely heterosexual.” Three days later, Schmitz confronted Amedure and shot him twice in the chest. At the murder trial, a friend of Amedure’s stated that Amedure and Schmitz went out drinking together after the taping and an alleged sexual encounter occurred. Three days later, Amedure left a “suggestive” note at Schmitz’s house.After finding the note, Schmitz withdrew money from a bank, purchased a shotgun, and then went to Amedure’s mobile home. He then asked Amedure if he was the one that left the note. According to court documents, Amedure responded with a smile. Schmitz then returned to his car, got his gun, and returned to Amedure’s trailer and killed him. After killing Amedure, Schmitz left the residence, telephoned 9-1-1, and confessed to the killing. At trial, defense attorneys argued that Schmitz, who had been diagnosed with manic depression and Graves’ disease, was caused to commit homicide by mental illness and humiliation, by way of the “gay panic defense.” Schmitz was found guilty of second degree murder in 1996 and sentenced to 25–50 years in prison, but his conviction was overturned on appeal. Upon retrial, he was found guilty of the same charge once again and his sentence was reinstated. Schmitz was released from prison on August 22, 2017, after being granted parole.

2011, Uganda – David Kato Kisule (c. 1964 – 26 January 2011), founding member of Sexual Minorities Uganda, is murdered. He was the founder and leader of the LGBT rights movement in Uganda where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death. He was a Ugandan teacher and LGBT rights activist, considered a father of Uganda’s gay rights movement^[ and described as “Uganda’s first openly gay man”. He served as advocacy officer for Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG). Kato was murdered in 2011 allegedly by a male sex worker, shortly after winning a lawsuit against a magazine which had published his name and photograph identifying him as gay and calling for him to be executed.

1874, France – W. Somerset Maugham I25 January 1874 – 16 December 1965) is born in Paris. He was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest-paid author during the 1930s. He was 21 when Oscar Wilde was put on trial. It was enough to make him “publicly straight.” He later said that his biggest mistake was “I tried to persuade myself that I was three-quarters normal and that only quarter of me was queer — whereas it was the other way around.” Maugham has been described as both bisexua and homosexual. In addition to his 13-year marriage to Sylvie Wellcome, he had affairs with other women in his youth. In later life Maugham was exclusively homosexual. Despite his wealth, his fame, and his secretary-companion Gerald Haxton (1892 – November 7, 1944), Maugham died a bitter man.

January 25, 1890

New York World reporter Nellie Bly completed an around-the-world journey in 72 days, six hours and 11 minutes, beating the fictional trip of Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg which took 80 days.

1892 – Alice Mitchel (Nov. 26, 1872 – March 31, 1898), 19, kills Freda Ward (1873 – February 23, 1892), 17, by the docks in Memphis as a result of jealousy. The story made national headlines for months. The two girls had planned to marry but Alice was furious that Freda had admitted to romantic feelings for two men. Mitchell was subsequently found insane by means of a jury inquisition and placed in a psychiatric hospital until her death in 1898. The case, exploited by sensationalist press, and focused attention of the sexual attachments of women and drew out into the public discourse discussions of lesbianism. The case was headlined as “A Very Unnatural Crime” and influenced the popular literature of the era which began to depict lesbians as “murderous” and “masculine”. One identity that came to be was the “mannish lesbian,” creating dialogue of gender expression. The case history produced by Mitchell’s defense describes her as “a regular tomboy.” In the courtroom Alice Mitchell was presented as “insane” by her attorneys. This story was featured on Investigation Discovery‘s Deadly Women and is the subject of the book Alice + Freda Forever by Alexis Coe.

1892, UK – Lesbian writer Virgian Woolfe (25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941) is born in London. She is considered one of the foremost modernists of the 20th-century and a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device.  The most celebrated of the Bloomsbury set, her writing is cerebral, and subtle. Woolfe’s greatest love was probably Vita Sackville-West (9 March 1892 – 2 June 1962), an English poet, novelist, and garden designer. The fruit of the affair is the novel Orlando, considered to be the most beautiful love poem in the English language.

He is a gay rights activist best known for the pivotal case in which he successfully sued Cumberland High School in Cumberland, Rhode Island, for not allowing him to bring his boyfriend to the senior prom at. Aaron later wrote of his experience in a book, Reflections of a Rock Lobster: A Story about Growing Up Gay. He later collaborated with his father, Walter Fricke, on a book about their relationship and of the elder Fricke’s coming to terms with his son’s homosexuality. That book, Sudden Strangers: The Story of a Gay Son and His Father, was published shortly after Walter Fricke’s death from cancer in 1989.

76, Spain – Roman Emperor Hadrian (24 January 76 – 10 July 138) is born near Seville Spain. Hadrian built the famous wall on the Northern fringe of the empire, in Britain, and put down the last serious uprising by the Jews. When his lover Antonius (27 November, c. 111 – before 30 October 130). mysteriously drowned in the Nile Hadrian went into a deep despair then put all of his wealth into building memorials to his lover, even building a city in his name. It said that the beautiful Antonius committed suicide before old age destroyed his looks. He was 21. 

1712, Germany –  Frederick the Great (24 January 1712 – 17 August 1786) is born in Berlin. He was King of Prussia from 1740 until 1786, the longest reign of any Hohenzollern king. Before he became king, Frederick fled with his lover Hans von Katte Hans von Katte (28 February 1704 – 6 November 1730) but the pair was captured and Frederick was forced to watch von Katte’s execution. On his father’s death, when Frederick became emperor, he went to the palace of Sans-Soucci at Potsdam and came into his own. He excluded women and surrounded himself with young men.

01-24-1905 — 04-11-1975   Dorothy Patten – Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was an American theatre producer and actress. Patten was born into a wealthy family and rejected the traditional role of a Southern 

socialite and set out for a life on stage. She left for New York City in 1927 after the death of her mother. Patten was linked romantically with actress Cheryl Crawford in the 1930s, who together with Harold Clurman and Lee Strasberg formed The Group Theatre in 1931. After her father died, she donated their family home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. After Patten broke up with Crawford in 1937, she became involved with Cecelia McMahon, who became her lifelong  companion until her death in 1975.  

01-24-1925 – 11-25-1970 Yukio Mishima – Born in Yotsuya, Toyko, Japan. He was a Japanese author, poet, and playwright. Nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Mishima was also an actor, and had a staring role in 

Yasuzo Masumurad’s 1960 film, Afraid to Die. He married Yoko Sugiyama on June 11, 1958 and the couple had two children. While Mishima was working on the film Forbidden Colors, he visited gay bars in Japan. In 1998, the writer Jiro Fukushima published an account of his relationship with Mishima in 1951, including fifteen letters between himself and the famed novelist. On November 25, 1970 Mishima committed suicide. He was recognized as one of the most important post-war stylists of the Japanese language. Mishima wrote 34 novels, about 50 plays, around 25 books of short stories, and at least 35 books of essays, one libretto, as well as one film.

01-24-1944 – 08-06-1983 Klaus Nomi (b. Klaus Sperbern) – Born in 

Immenstadt, Bavaria, Germany. He was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and flamboyant stage persona. His song choice was unusual also, ranging from classical opera to pop standards like Leslie Gore’s You Don’t Own Me, Chubby Checker’s The Twist, and Lou Christie’s Lightnin’ Strikes. In the 1960s, he sang opera arias at the Berlin gay discothèque Kleist Casino. In 1972 Nomi moved to New York City. In the United States he is best remembered as one of David Bowie’s backup singers for a 1979 performance on Saturday Night Live. He was known to be gay and died in 1983 at the age or 39 from complications from AIDS.

Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Jailhouse Rock’. It became the first ever single to enter the chart at No.1 and was Presley’s second UK No.1. It went on to sell over 4 million copies in the US.

01-24-1961 Matthew J. Titone – Born in Staten Island, New York City, New York. He is an American politician and lawyer from Staten Island, New York. A Democrat, he serves as a member of the New York State Assembly. After being 

admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1992, Titone worked pro bono for the Staten Island AIDS Task Force and Project Hospitality. He gathered national attention when he took on the New York State adoption industry representing a family who adopted a baby boy. The family was never informed by the adoption agency that the child was born with the AIDS virus and resulted in the child being untreated for the illness for eleven years after the adoption. Titone is openly gay and married his partner of 18 years, Giosue Pugliese, in a ceremony at Staten Island Borough Hall in September 2011, shortly after same-sex marriage was legalized in New York State. He is one of six LGBT members of the New York Legislature.

January 24, 1962

Acting like Col Tom Parker, Brian Epstein signed a management deal with The Beatles. Epstein was to receive 25 per cent of the bands gross earnings, the normal management deal was 10 per cent. Epstein directs their image away from Teddy Boys in leather jackets to a smarter stage presentation, with matching suits and bows to the audience. Unlike Parker, Epstein never added his signature to the document. Epstein, who always had the interests of the group at heart, vowed not to sign the contract until he had obtained a record deal for the group.   Epstein of course did secure a recording contract through much perseverance, and on October 1, 1962, a new management contract was drawn up, and that one, Epstein signed along with the Beatles.

1965 – Winston Churchill (1874-1965) died. He had been Britain’s wartime prime minister whose courageous leadership and defiant rhetoric had fortified the English during their long struggle against Hitler’s Germany. “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat,” he stated upon becoming prime minister at the beginning of the war. He called Hitler’s Reich a “monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime.” Following the war, he coined the term “Iron Curtain” to describe the barrier between areas in Eastern Europe under Soviet control and the free West. In his biography of W. Somerset Maugham (25 January 1874 – 16 December 1965), Ted Morgan writes that Maugham once asked Churchill if it were true as Churchill’s mother had claimed, that the statesman had affairs with men in his youth. “Not true!” Churchill replied. “But, I once went to bed with a man to see what it was like.” That man was British musical-comedy star Ivor Novello (15 January 1893 – 6 March 1951)”And, what was it like?” Maugham asked. “Musical,” Churchill replied

January 24, 1969New Jersey state prosecutors issue a warning to US record dealers that they would be charged with distributing pornography if they were caught selling the John Lennon / Yoko Ono LP ‘Two Virgins’. The front cover of the album showed the pair frontally nude, while the back cover showed them from behind. 01-23-1819 – 1896 Mary Charlotte Lloyd – Born in Denbighshire, Wales. She was a sculptor. 

Her father was a squire over many counties, owning 4,300 acres of land, and Lloyd inherited money from a maiden aunt, as well as gifts from Eleanor Charlotte Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, the Ladies of Llangollen. Lloyd studied art and worked with French artist Rosa Bonheur (March 16, 1822 – May 25, 1899). In 1853 she was working in the studio of Welsh sculptor John Gibson in Rome. In 1861, while in Rome, she met Frances Power Cobbe. Both being nonconformists, they connected with like minded women in Italy. In 1863, they settled together in London. In April 1884 the couple moved to Lloyd’s Welsh estate Hengwrt and lived together until Lloyd’s death in 1896. Letters by Cobbe referred to Lloyd as “husband,” “wife,” as well “dear friend.”

01-23-1881 – 06-01-1957 La Marchesa Casati (Luisa, Marquise Casati Stampa di Soncino) – Born in Milan, Italy. She was an Italian heiress, muse, 

and patroness of the arts. She had an affair with Romain Brooks. She also had a long term affair with author Gabriele d’Annunzio. She was a celebrity and femme fatale, and dominated and delighted European society for nearly three decades. The beautiful and extravagant hostess to the Ballets Russes was something of a legend among her contemporaries. She astonished society by parading a with a pair of leashed cheetahs and wearing live snakes as jewelry. In 1910 Casati took up residence at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal in Venice (now the home of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection) where her soirées would become legendary. From 

1919 to 1920 she lived at Villa San Michele in Capri. Her time on the Italian island provided a tolerant home to a wide collection of artists, gay men, and lesbians in exile. By 1930, Casati had amassed a personal debt of $25 million. She fled to London, where she lived in comparative poverty. She died at her residence, 32 Beaufort Gardens in Knightsbridge at the age of 76. Characters based on Casati were played by Vivien Leigh in La Contessa (1965) and by Ingrid Bergman in the film A Matter of Time (1976).

1893 – Franklin Pangborn (January 23, 1889 – July 20, 1958) is born in Newark, New Jersey. He was an American comedic character actor. Pangborn was famous for small, but memorable roles, with a comic flair. He appeared in many Preston Sturges movies as well as the W.C. Fields films International House, The Bank Dick, and Never Give a Sucker an Even Break. For his contributions to motion pictures, Pangborn received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1500 Vine Street on February 8, 1960. Pangborn lived in Laguna Beach, California in a house with his mother and his “occasional boyfriend” according to William Mann in Behind the Screen. He died on July 20, 1958.

01-23-1932 James Rado (James Alexander Radomski) – Born in Venice Beach, California. He is an American actor, playwright, director, writer, and 

composer, best known as the co-author, along with Gerome Ragni, of the 1967 rock musical Hair. In an interview with The Advocate, Rado said he had an intimate relationship with Ragni. Hair is a bisexual rock musical that changed the modern musical and helped turn public opinion against the Vietnam War. It was the first rock musical on Broadway, the first Broadway show to feature full nudity, and the first to feature a same-sex kiss. At the center of Hair is a bisexual triangle between the characters Berger, Sheila, and Claude. But the central love relationship in the show is between 

Claude and Berger, the characters based on the relationship of Rado and Ragni. There is also the love relationship between Sheila and Jeannie. The Broadway production received two Tony nominations, and the cast album went to number one, receiving a Grammy. The musical had four number one hit singles, Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In, Hair, Easy to be Hard, and Good Morning Sunshine. In 1979, Hair was made into a film. Since 1967, Hair has been performed continuously around the world

01-23-1934 – 06-16-2003 Pierre Bourgault – Born in East Angus, Canada. 

He was a French Canadian politician and essayist, as well as an actor and journalist. He is most famous as a public speaker who advocated sovereignty for Quebec from Canada. He was openly gay.

It becomes the first appearance of the Canadian gay movement before a legislative body. 



1976,

Canada – Police raid the Club Baths of Montreal on the eve of the Montreal Olympics. Thirteen people are arrested and charged as found-ins in a common bawdyhouse, a charge usually reserved for prostitution in Canada. 

David Bowie released his tenth studio album Station to Station, which was the vehicle for his last great “character”, the Thin White Duke. The album made the top five in both the UK and US charts.

On this date, David Palmer, who was the former keyboardist for Jethro Tull., announced he had undergone a sex change and would now be known as “Dee”.

2008, Azerbaijan, Iran – Hamzeh Chavi, 18, and Loghman Hamzehpour, 19, are arrested for homosexuality. They confessed that they were in love which prompted the court to charge them with “waging a war against God” and sodomy. An online petition garnered over 20,000 signatures calling for their release. They may have been executed.

2009, France – Roger Karoutchi (born 26 August 1951), French Secretary of State, comes out and is the first openly gay member of the French government.

01-23-2015 A federal judge, U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade, ruled that Alabama’s constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, known as the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment, violates the 14th Amendment’s due process and equal protection clauses. “If anything, 

Alabama’s prohibition of same-sex marriage detracts from its goal of promoting optimal environments for children,” Granade writes. “Those children currently being raised by same-sex parents in Alabama are just as worthy of protection and recognition by the State as are children being raised by opposite-sex parents. Yet Alabama’s Sanctity laws harms the children of same-sex couples for the same reasons that the Supreme Court found that the Defense of Marriage Act harmed children of same-sex couples.”

1952 – Jim Kepner (1923 – 15 November 1997) and members of Mattachine discussed the idea of publishing a magazine for the LGBT community. They named their magazine ONE Inc. and put out the first issue in January 1953. In 1956, ONE opened the Institute for Homophile Studies. Today, ONE is the National Gay and Lesbian Archives at the University of Southern California  and the largest repository of LGBT materials in the world. Kepner was a journalist, author, historian, archivist and leader in the gay rights movement.

1957, Germany – Cabaret singer and open lesbian Claire Waldoff (21 October 1884 – 22 January 1957), dies. She was a famous kabarett singer and entertainer in Berlin during the 1910s and 1920s, chiefly known for performing ironic songs in the Berlinish dialect and lesbian undertones and themes. After the war, she lost her savings in the West German monetary reform of 1948 and from 1951 relied on little monetary support by the Senate of Berlin. In 1953, she wrote her autobiography. Waldoff died aged 72 after a stroke. She and her partner of 40 years, Olga von Roeder (June 12, 1886-July 11, 1963), share a final resting place in Stuttgart. They lived in Germany their entire lives. Claire Waldoff has a star in Walk of Fame of Cabaret, Mainz.

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1966 – The first lesbian to appear on the cover of the lesbian magazine The Ladder with her face showing was Lilli Vincenz (born September 26, 1937). Lilli  is a lesbian activist and the first lesbian member of the gay political activist effort, the Mattachine Society of Washington (MSW). She served as the editor of the organization’s newsletter and in 1969 along with Nancy Tucker created the independent newspaper, the Gay Blade, which later became the Washington Blade. She was the only self-identified lesbian to participate in the second White House picket with Frank Kameny (May 21, 1925 – October 11, 2011). In 2013 her papers, films and other memorabilia were donated to the Library of Congress.

January 22, 1972David Bowie ‘came out’ as bisexual during an interview in the British music weekly Melody Maker.

1973 – Abortion became legal in the U.S. as the Supreme Court announced its decision in the case of Roe vs. Wade striking down local state laws restricting abortions in the first six months of pregnancy. In more recent rulings (1989 and 1992) the Court upheld the power of individual states to impose some restrictions.  In 1994, Norma Leah McCorvey (aka “Jane Roe”) (September 22, 1947 – February 18, 2017) wrote of her sexual orientation in her memoir I Am Roe: My Life, Roe V. Wade, and Freedom of Choice. For many years, she had lived quietly in Dallas with her long-time partner, Connie Gonzales. A few years later she claims that she has converted to Christianity and was no longer a lesbian.

1978 – New York City Mayor Ed Koch issues Executive Order 50 which forbids discrimination against gay men and lesbians in municipal government.

1986 – Carl Wittman (February 23, 1943 – January 22, 1986) dies. Carl was a member of the national council of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and later an activist for LGBT rights. He co-authored “An Interracial Movement of the Poor?” (1963) with Tom Hayden and wrote “A Gay Manifesto” (1970). Wittman was denied hospital treatment for AIDS and committed suicide by drug overdose at home in North Carolina.

01-21-1885 – 05-08-1978 Duncan Grant – Born in Rothiemurchus, Aviemore, 

Scotland. He was a British painter and designer of textiles, pottery, theatre sets, and costumes. Grant was a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Although he was gay, he had a relationship with Vanessa Bell and they had a daughter. Grant continued to live with Bell for more than 40 years, their relationship one of friendship, respect, and creativity. They often painted in the same studio, praising and critiquing each other’s work. While living with Bell, Grant had many affairs with men, including the writer and publisher, David Garett, who ended up married to Grant and Bell’s daughter, Angelica. Other affairs included the writer Lytton Strachey, politician Arthur Hobhouse, and the economist John Maynard Keynes. In Grant’s later years, his lover, the poet Paul Roche, whom he had known since 1946, took care of him until his death in 1978.

01-21-1895 – 03-23-1972 Cristóbal Balenciaga – Born in Getaria, Gipuzkoa, Spain. He was a gay Spanish Basque fashion designer and founder of the Balenciaga fashion house. His business partner and greatest love was Vladzio 

Zawrorowski d’Attainville, who died in 1948. Balenciaga was successful during his early career as a designer in Spain. It was his designs in the post-war years that showed the full scale of the inventiveness of a highly original designer. In 1951, he  transformed the silhouette, broadening of the shoulder, and removing the waist. In 1955, he designed the tunic dress, which later developed into the chemise dress of 1957. And eventually, in 1959, his work culminated in the Empire line, with high-waisted dresses and coats cut like kimonos. He was one of the few couturiers in fashion history who could use their own hands to draw, cut, and sew the designs which symbolized the height of his artistry.

1903 –New York police conduct the first recorded raid on a gay bathhouse, the Ariston Hotel Baths. Twenty-six men are arrested and 12 brought to trial on sodomy charges. Seven men received sentences ranging from 4 to 20 years in prison

01-21-1952 – 02-21-1998 Penny Severns – Born in Decatur, Illinois. She was a member of the Illinois Senate, representing the 51st Senate District from 

1987 until her death in 1998. She was viewed as an advocate for working families, breast cancer awareness, and who helped in the preservation of the Dana-Thomas House, built by Frank Lloyd Wright. In late 1993, Severns was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time of her death, she was in a relationship with journalist Terry Mutchler. Due to the stigma against same-sex relationships at the time, they kept their relationship a secret. In November 2014, Mutchler wrote a book about her relationship with Severns, titled Under This Beautiful Dome.

01-21-1953   Rick Welts – Born in Seattle, Washington. He is an American sports executive, serving as the President and Chief Operating Officer for 

the Golden State Warriors basketball association. On May 15, 2011, Welts publicly came out as gay in an interview with The New York Times. He is the first prominent American sports executive to come out. He is a member of the Advisory Board for You Can Play, a campaign dedicated to fighting homophobia in sports. On January 10, 2020, Welts married Todd Gage, his partner of nine years, at San Francisco City Hall. The ceremony was officiated by Mayor London Breed.

01-21-1968 – 01-26-2001 Diane Whipple – Born in Princeton, New Jersey. She was a lacrosse player and coach at Saint Mary’s College of California, who is best known as the victim of a fatal dog attack in San Francisco in January 2001. The dogs involved were two Presa Canario dogs owned by neighbors 

living in the same apartment building. In March 2001, a grand jury indicted Knoller and Noel (owners of the dogs). The jury found both Noel and Knoller guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and found Knoller guilty of second-degree murder. After their convictions in 2002, the State Bar of California suspended their law licenses. Noel was disbarred in February 2007. Knoller is serving her sentence (15 years to life) in Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla. At the time of her death, Whipple lived with her domestic partner of six years, Sharon Smith. Smith also succeeded in suing Knoller and Noel for $1,500,000 in civil damages. She donated some of the money to Saint Mary’s College of California to fund the women’s lacrosse team.

1989 — Jazz artist Billy Tipton (December 29, 1914 – January 21, 1989) dies at age 74 of an ulcer. He was an American jazz musician and bandleader. Tipton was  assigned female at birth but lived as a male from age 19. He married five times and adopted three sons. Early in his career, Tipton presented as a male only professionally, continuing to present as a woman otherwise. He spent those early years living with a woman named Non Earl Harrell, in a relationship that other musicians thought of as lesbian. The relationship ended in 1942.

Kelly, Tom Petty, Korn and Linkin Park were not allowed after concerns over the cost of securing rights for the song’s use, (or the composers not wanting their song’s to be performed on the show).

2018 – Helen Grace James (born 1928) grew up in Pennsylvania  and enlisted in the Air Force in 1952. She had a fine service record and was promoted to Airman 2nd Class.But when she was stationed at Roslyn Air Force Base on Long Island, Airman James came under investigation by the Office of Special Investigation. One night in the winter of 1955, during The Lavender Scare, she sat with a friend in her car to eat sandwiches when an officer shined a blinding light into her eyes and took her into custody. She was later interrogated for hours. Investigators told Helen Grace James that if she didn’t sign a statement they put in front of her, they would tell her family she was gay.Helen Grace James signed. She was discharged as “undesirable.”Now, 60 years later Helen Grace James has received her honorable discharge this week after decades of fighting the government for recognition. “I’m still trying to process it,” she told NBC. “It was both joy and shock. It was really true. It was really going to be an ‘honorable discharge. The Air Force recognizes me as a full person in the military,” she said, having done “my job helping to take care of the country I love.”
