1873, UK – Simeon Solomon  (9 October 1840 – 14 August 1905) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter noted for his depictions of Jewish life and same-sex desire as well as a poet. Solomon and George Roberts, a stableman, are arrested at a public urinal in London and charged with the Crime of Buggery.

02-11-1962 Tammy Baldwin – Born in Madison, Wisconsin. She is an American politician and has always been out publicly as a lesbian. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin’s 2nd district. In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, the first woman to represent Wisconsin, and the first out gay U.S. Senator in history. In 1993, she said that she was disappointed by President Clinton’s compromise on LGBT rights in supporting the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. In early 1994, she proposed legalizing same-sex marriage in Wisconsin. On October 20, 2013, Baldwin was one of sixteen female Democratic senators to sign a letter endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in the 2016 Presidential Election.

On February 5, 2020, regarding the impeachment of Trump, she stated, “I only have one of 100 votes in the U.S. Senate and I am afraid that the majority is putting this president above the law by not convicting him of these impeachable offenses. But let’s be clear, this is not an exoneration of President Trump, it is a failure to show moral courage and hold this president accountable.”

1965: At the San Francisco trial of the four people arrested at the Council on Religion and the Homosexual’s New Year’s Ball, the judge orders the jury to find the defendants not guilty. The decision is widely seen as a turning point in the homophile movement’s fight for gay and lesbian civil rights.

1967: In a follow-up action to Los Angeles’ Black Cat demonstration on New Year’s Eve, around 40 picketers demonstrate in front of the Black Cat in coordination with hippies and other counterculture groups who had been targeted by police for harassment and violence.

02-11-1967   The Black Cat protest – Almost 2 years before Stonewall. On New Year’s Eve, 1966/1967, at midnight, as traditional New Year’s kisses 

were exchanged in the LGBT bar, the Black Cat, undercover cops started arresting people without identifying themselves. Fourteen people were dragged to waiting patrol cars. The cops then raided the New Faces bar, where other LGBT people were arrested. The raids sparked anger and fear in the gay community. At the time, it was the bars that were the only relatively safe place for gay people to gather. Six of the men arrested for kissing at the Black Cat were convicted of lewd conduct and required to register as sex offenders. Lawyer Herbert Selwyn

 argued for the first time on the basis of equal protection under the law. The US Supreme Court declined to hear the case. Two LGBT organizations came together — Personal Rights in Defense and Education (PRIDE) and The Southern California Council on Religion and Homophile (SCCRH) to stage an unprecedented protest. A legal defense fund was set up and the media was contacted. On February 11, 1967, in response to the harassment and unprovoked police attack, nearly 600 people gathered in a peaceful demonstration in front of the Black Cat. 

There was some television coverage of the protest and the only print coverage was by the L.A. Free Press. In 2008, the Black Cat was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #939 for its early and significant role in the LGBT civil rights movement. It’s the first building in Los Angeles to be landmarked solely for its LGBT history. The Black Cat is located at 3909 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, California.

1974, Canada – In Winnipeg, Richard North and Chris Vogel are married by a Unitarian-Universalist minister. First publicized as “gay marriage” in Canada, it was not recognized by the government.

Anita Bryant gives her first Save Our Children press conference in Florida. She claims she can prove that homosexuals are “trying to recruit our children to homosexuality.”

February 11, 1977

  David Bowie released ‘Sound and Vision’ as a single, which was taken from his latest album Low. ‘Sound and Vision’ was used by the BBC in the UK on trailers at the time, providing considerable exposure, much needed as Bowie opted to do nothing to promote the single himself, and helped the song to No.3 on the UK charts.

1978

Aubrey O’Day – Born in San Francisco, California. She is an American singer-songwriter, member of the duo band Dumblonde, actress, fashion designer, reality television personality, fashion model, and a former member of the girl group Danity Kane. 

On December 15, 2008, Fox News reported that O’Day attended a party accompanied with her girlfriend/lover, according to an anonymous friend in attendance. When questioned by UsMagazine.com regarding the gay rumors, O’Day did not confirm nor deny the speculation about her sexuality, and once again stated that she could not say “one way or another” what her sexual orientation is at this point in her life. In 2009, while on the show Chelsea Lately, when asked about being bisexual, she replied, “Generally, I don’t like to label myself…I want to find someone I’m passionate about, and I don’t want to limit myself to one segment of the population.” She is a gay rights advocate and chose the “Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network” (GLSEN) as her charity for Celebrity Apprentice.

1985

The Police won Outstanding Contribution to British music at the fourth annual Brit Awards held in London. 2016

72-year-old Barry Manilow was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after suffering what was described as “complications from emergency oral surgery” that he had undergone earlier in the week. His One Last Time tour had to be put on hold and concerts in Kentucky and Tennessee were canceled. To the surprise of many, just three days later Barry was well enough to attend Clive Davis’ pre-Grammys party in L.A. where he performed “Mandy” as well as “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart” from his latest album, “My Dream Duets”.

1893 – William “Big Bill” Tilden (February 10, 1893 – June 5, 1953)is born in Philadelphia. Almost as popular as Babe Ruth, Tilden was America’s tennis hero.He is often considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Tilden was the World No. 1 player for six years from 1920 through 1925. During his lifetime, however, he was a flamboyant character who was never out of the public eye, acting in both movies and plays as well as playing tennis. He also had two arrests for sexual misconduct with teenage boys in the late 1940s; these led to incarcerations in the Los Angeles area. After his convictions he was shunned in public. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1959, six years after his death.

02-10-1908 – 09-27-2002 Charles Henri Ford – Born in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Ford was an American poet, novelist, filmmaker, photographer, and collage artist, best known for his 

editorship of the Surrealist magazine View (1940-1947) in New York City. He dropped out of school and by age 16 had started his first magazine, Blues (subtitled “A Bisexual Bimonthly”). He went to Paris and became part of Gertrude Stein’s salon. His life-partner was artist Pavel Tchelitchew until his death in 1957. Ford returned from Rome, Italy to the U.S. in 1962 where he lived for many years in The Dakota apartment building in New York City.

1911, Germany – The German League for the Protection of Mothers and Sexual Reform’ (‘Deutscher Bund für Mutterschutz und Sexualreform’)condemns anti-gay Paragraph 175 and voices its rejection of attempts to extend the law to cover women as well as men.

1916 – Mansel Vardaman Boyle (1877-1945), the “Gay Deceiver,” appears in a burlesque show. He was a famous and successful female impersonator of the day and was living with gay silent film star J. Warren Kerrigan(July 25, 1879 – June 9, 1947)in Los Angeles from at least 1936 to 1938, though Kerrigan’s long-time lover was actor James Carroll Vincent(November 9, 1897 – May 15, 1948).

02-10-1920 – 12-10-2010 Adele Starr – Born in Brooklyn, New York,. She and her husband moved to the Los Angles area in 1951. It was when Philip Starr, the couple’s second son, came 

out to his parents in 1974, that his mother got involved with gay rights. Although the gay rights movement was well underway by then he recalled, “being gay was still seen as a mental illness.” In 1976, Adele Starr founded the Los Angeles chapter of PFLAG. In 1979, she spoke on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at a march for gay rights. Two years later, she became PFLAG’s first national president; she served in that capacity until 1986 and remained a forceful advocate for civil rights and, in later years for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

02-10-1944 – 06-18-1992 Peter Allen – Born in Tenterfield, Australia. He was an Australian singer, songwriter, pianist, and entertainer. His songs were made popular by many recording artists, including Elkie Brooks, Melissa Manchester, and Olivia Newton-John. In 1981, Arthur’s Theme won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Allen was the first husband of Liza Minnelli. They divorced after 7 years of marriage. He later came out as gay. Both he and his long-term partner, Gregory Connell, died from AIDS-related illnesses.

1946 – Ellen Marie Barrett (born February 10, 1946) is an American priest of the Episcopal Church. She was the first open lesbian to be ordained to the priesthood following the Episcopal Church’s General Convention approval of the ordination of women in 1977. Barrett’s candor about her homosexuality caused great controversy within the church. Even prior to her ordination, she was a prominent spokesperson for the rights of gaysand lesbians in the church, especially regarding their ordination.

Episode.” On the April 24, 2007 airing of DeGeneres’s talk show, Dern revealed she did not work for more than a year following her appearance in that episode because of resulting backlash, but nevertheless called it an “extraordinary experience and opportunity.” She is an American actress, film director, and producer. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1991 for her performance in the film Rambling Rose. In 2014 she received her second Academy Award nomination for the work in the film Wild. In 2020, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the film Marriage Story. She is the daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd.

1976: Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury introduces a gay character, Andy Lippincott (who had first appeared a month earlier).  Five newspapers refuse to carry the story arc of Andy’s coming out to Joanie Caucus.  Lippincott appears on and off in the daily strip for years.  In 1989, he returned to the strip when he is diagnosed with AIDS. Over the course of the next year, Lippincott’s battles with the disease, and eventual death from it, helped bring the AIDS crisis into popular culture.

BCE to The Suffragettes

1874 – Amy Lowell American lesbian poet was born in Brookline. Massachusetts. A militant literary leader she thumbed her nose at the Boston Brahmans who raised her and outed herself. Her lover was actress Ada Dwyer Russell whom she called “Peter.” Russell is reputed to be the subject of Lowell’s more erotic works, most notably the love poems contained in ‘Two Speak Together’, a subsection of Pictures of the Floating World.  The two women traveled to England together, where Lowell met Ezra Pound, who at once became a major influence and a major critic of her work. Pound considered Lowell’s embrace of Imagism to be a kind of hi-jacking of the movement, and among his friends he referred to her as the “hippo-poetess”, because of her large body size. Lowell has been linked romantically to writer Mercedes de Acosta, but the only evidence of any contact between them is a brief correspondence about a planned memorial for Duse. Lowell was a short but imposing figure who kept her hair in a bun and wore a pince-nez.

1923 – Brendan Behan is born.  Behan was an Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, and playwright who wrote in both English and Irish.  Born in Dublin into a republican family, he became a member of the IRA’s youth organisation Fianna Éireann at the age of fourteen. However, there was also a strong emphasis on Irish history and culture in the home, which meant he was steeped in literature and patriotic ballads from a tender age. Behan eventually joined the IRA at sixteen, which led to him serving time in a borstal youth prison in the United Kingdom (see “The Borstal Boy” ) and was also imprisoned in Republic of Ireland. During this time, he took it upon himself to study and he became a fluent speaker of the Irish language. Subsequently released from prison as part of a general amnesty given by the Fianna Fáil government in 1946, Behan moved between homes in Dublin, Kerry and Connemara and also resided in Paris for a period.   Behan had married Beatrice Salkeld  in 1955. A daughter, Blanaid, was born in 1963.  This however, was not enough to bring Behan back from his alcoholic abyss. By early March 1964, the end was in sight. Collapsing at the Harbour Lights bar, he was transferred to the Meath Hospital in central Dublin, where he died, aged 41. The family of Brendan Behan claim that he was bisexual all of his life, but he kept it quiet for his families sake.

1927 – Three plays with same-sex love content are raided and the casts and producers are arrested. The plays are “The Captive,” a controversial play about two women with an “abnormal relationship”; “Sex” starring Mae West; and “The Virgin Man.” No one was prosecuted but the plays closed days later. The Captive, by Édouard Bourdet, was a three-act melodrama was among the first Broadway plays to deal with lesbianism and caused a scandal in New York City. The play was shut down after 160 performances and prompted the adoption of a state law dealing with obscenity; Sex by Jane Mast was  “obscene, indecent, immoral, and impure” and put Mae Westin prison for 10 days; The Virgin Man was a 1956 Argentine comedy film directed by Román Viñoly Barreto and starring Luis Sandrini. Cast.

02-09-1938 – 12-31-2012 Jovette Marchessault – Born in Montreal, Quebec. 

She was a Canadian writer, artist, and an important pioneer of lesbian and feminist literature and art in Canada. In 1980, with the publication of Triptyque lesbien, she risked her developing career by becoming the first Quebec novelist to declare her lesbianism. A portrait of Marchessault, by artist Robert Laliberté, is on exhibit in the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives’ National Portrait Collection, in honor of her role as a builder of LGBT culture and history in Canada.

1941 – Sheila James Kuehl (born February 9, 1941) is an American politician and former child actor, currently the member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 3rd District. In 1994, she became the first openly gay California legislator and in 1997, she was the first woman to be named Speaker pro Tempore in California. Kuehl most recently served as a Democratic member of the California State Senate, representing the 23rd district in Los Angeles County and parts of southern Ventura County. A former member of the California State Assembly, she was elected to the Senate in 2000 and served until December 2008. She was elected to her supervisorial post in 2014. In her capacity as Supervisor, she also sits on the Metro Board, First 5 LA, and is the County appointee to the South Coast Air Quality Management District. As a child actress she performed under the stage name Sheila James. the role she is probably best known for – her portrayal of teen-aged genius Zelda Gilroy, the wannabe girlfriend of the title character in the television series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, which aired on CBS from 1959 to 1963. Zelda was originally intended to be a one-shot character in the early Dobie Gillis episode “Love is a Science”, but Dobie creator Max Shulman liked Kuehl and had her signed on as a semi-regular cast member. Since 2010, Kuehl has hosted “Get Used To It”, a national cable show on LGBT issues, filmed in West Hollywood.

1943 – Marc ’10½’ Stevens was a pioneering bisexual  sex industry figure during the 1970’s in New York City. He appeared in over 80 pornographic movies, and he also led an erotic dance troupe and performed in live sex shows. While he predominantly appeared in heterosexual films and loops, he made a number of gay movies as well. He was a close associate of leading sex industry figures such as Jason & Tina Russell, Annie Sprinkle, who was also his neighbor for a time, Sharon Mitchell, Jamie Gillis, Georgina Spelvin and Gloria Leonard. Tall and lean with a well-defined musculature, he had the nickname “10½” because of the size of his rather large circumcised penis. Stevens passed away of AIDS in 1989 at age 46

1944 – Alice Walker (born February 9, 1944) is born. She is an African-American novelist, short story writer, poet, and activist. She wrote the novel The Color Purple (1982) for which she won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She also wrote the novels Meridian (1976) and The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970), among other works. Walker dislikes labels, but acknowledges having been in love with both men and women and, in a 1996 Essence article, described herself as bisexual. . In the mid-1990s, she was involved in a romantic relationship with singer Tracy Chapman. “It was delicious and lovely and wonderful and I totally enjoyed it and I was completely in love with her but it was nobody’s business but ours.” Walker wrote, “At one point I learned Transcendental Meditation. This was 30-something years ago. It took me back to the way that I naturally was as a child growing up way in the country, rarely seeing people. I was in that state on oneness with creation and it was as if I didn’t exist except as a part of everything.”

02-09-1948 Dr. Susan Love – Born in Little Silver, New Jersey. She is an American Surgeon, a prominent advocate of preventative breast cancer research, and author. She is regarded as one of 

the most respected women’s health specialists in the United States. In 2012, she announced that she was was diagnosed with leukemia and took a leave of absence to pursue chemotherapy treatment. After a successful treatment, she returned to work the following year. On February 22, 2004, she married her partner, Dr. Helen Sperry Cooksey in San Francisco.

1970 – Sometime in the 1940s a sign appeared over the popular Los Angeles bar at Barney’s Beanery that read “FAGOTS – STAY OUT.” The message so offended the locals that Life magazine did an article on opposition to the sign in 1964, which included a photograph of the owner steadfastly holding on to it. The owner died in 1968, and efforts continued to have the sign removed. The Gay Liberation Front organized a zap of the restaurant on February 7, 1970 to push for its removal. The sign disappeared that day. The sign was put up and taken down several times over the next 14 years, but the practice ended in December, 1984, days after the city voted itself into existence. The then-mayor, Valerie Terrigno, the entire city council and gay-rights activists marched into Barney’s and relieved the wall of the offending sign. It was held by Morris Kight for many years and now rests in the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives.

1914 – Author William S. Burroughs (February 5, 1914 – August 2, 1997) was born in St Louis. Burroughs was a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author whose influence is considered to have affected a range of popular culture as well as literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. He shunned the wealth of his business machine-making family to work a number of jobs but his most famous accomplishment was as a writer. 1849-1896   We’wha – He was a Zuni Native American from New Mexico. He was a famous Lhamana, a traditional Zuni gender role, now described as mixed-gender or Two-Spirit. Lhamana were men who lived in part as women, wearing a mixture of women’s and men’s clothing and doing a great deal of women’s work, as well as serving as mediators. We’wha is known historically mainly for the fact that she was a man but chose to live out his life as a woman. He/she was well respected in the tribe.

1923, Austria – Nazi thugs fire guns into a Vienna homophile gathering attended by Magnus Hirschfeld (14 May 1868 – 14 May 1935)and wound a number of people in the crowd. Hirschfeld was a German Jewish physician and sexologist educated primarily in Germany; he based his practice in Berlin-Charlottenburg. An outspoken advocate for sexual minorities, Hirschfeld founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee. Historian Dustin Goltz characterized this group as having carried out “the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights“.

1915- On a speaking tour, Edith Lees Ellis (1861-Sept. 14, 1916), open lesbian wife of Havelock Ellis (2 February 1859 – 8 July 1939), exhorts women to begin “organizing a new love world.” She was an English writer and women’s rights activist. From the beginning, their marriage was unconventional; at the end of the honeymoon Havelock went back to his bachelor rooms and Edith had several affairs with women, of which her husband was aware. Their open marriage was the central subject in Havelock Ellis’s autobiography, My Life(1939).

1934 — Eleanor Roosevelt (October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962) writes to her lover journalist Lorena Hickok (March 7, 1893 – May 1, 1968)about how lucky they. “Someday perhaps fate will be kind & let us arrange a life more to our liking [but] for the time being we are lucky to have what we have. Dearest, we are happy together and strong relationships have to grow deep roots.” The nature of Hickok and Roosevelt’s relationship has been a subject of dispute among historians. Roosevelt was close friends with several lesbian couples, such as suffragistsand educators Nancy Cook (August 26, 1884 – August 16, 1962)and Marion Dickerman(April 11, 1890 – May 16, 1983), and  educator Esther Lape (October 8, 1881 – May 17, 1981)and scholar and suffragist  Elizabeth Fisher Read(1872 – December 13, 1943), suggesting that she understood lesbianism; Marie Souvestre(28 April 1830 – 30 March 1905), Roosevelt’s childhood teacher and a great influence on her later thinking, was also a lesbian

1938 – Gay writer and historian Martin Greif (February 4, 1938 – November 17, 1996) was born in New York City. He was an American editor, lecturer, publisher and writer.A prolific writer, Greif was one of the first people to compile a history of gays and lesbians and biographies of some of the most illustrious people in time. Main Street Press was founded in 1978 by Greif and his life partner, Lawrence Grow, in Clinton, New Jersey. Grow died of a stroke associated with AIDS in 1991. Greif died of an AIDS-related illness in November 1996.

Gregory Woods (1953) – Born in Egypt. He is a British poet that grew up in Ghana. Since 1990 he has taught at Nottingham Trent University, where in 1998 he was 

appointed Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies, the first such appointment in the United Kingdom. On retirement, he was appointed Emeritus Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies. His main areas of interest are twentieth-century gay and lesbian literature; post-war gay and lesbian films, cultural studies, and the AIDS epidemic. In addition to his poetry collections, he is the author of a number of books. According to poet Sinéad Morrissey, “Probably, the finest gay poet in the United Kingdom.”

Pauline Park (1960) – Born in Korea and adopted by European American parents. She is an activist for transgender rights. In 1997, Park co-founded Queens Pride

 House, a center for the LGBT communities of Queens, and Iban/Queer Koreans of New York.  In 1998, Park co-founded the NY Assoc. for Gender Rights Advocacy, the first statewide transgender advocacy organization in New York. She negotiated inclusion of gender identity and expression in the Dignity for All Students Ace, a safe schools bill enacted by the New York State Legislature in 2010. Park was adopted by European American parents and raised in the United States. In an interview, she said, “I think I knew when I was four or so before I even knew the word. It’s a funny story. When I went to kindergarten, the first day all the girls were wearing stretch pants with stirrups, remember those? I thought they were so cute and I wanted some. I remember when I came home and asked for some my mother was shocked. That was when I began to understand that certain things were for girls and certain things were for boys. And I began to recognize that as a child I couldn’t be who I was until I was an adult.”

Mpho Andrea Tutu (1963) – Born in London, England. She is the youngest daughter of Desmond Tutu. Her father ordained her a priest of the Episcopal Church in 2004. Mpho and her father wrote the book Made for Goodness

(2010) based on the belief that all people are basically good and that by spreading the message of peace and goodwill that changes can be made. She was married to Joseph Burris and had two children with him. The couple divorced. In late 2015, she married her long-time Dutch girlfriend, Dr. Marceline van Furth in a small private ceremony in the Netherlands, but the couple went public in January 2016 when they had a wedding celebration in Cape Town, South Africa. Her marriage meant that she lost her license to practice as a priest. Same-sex marriage was legalized in South Africa in 2006, but the church does not recognize those

marriages. Cape Town bishop Raphael Hess said he was “vexed” by the need for Tutu-van Furth to renounce her clerical duties, but he hoped it would be short-lived. Speaking to South Africa’s City Press from her honeymoon in Bali, Mpho noted the “irony” of being censored for her similarities to her spouse rather than her differences, as South Africans once were under apartheid. Mpho stated, “My wife and I meet across almost every dimension of difference. Some of our differences are obvious; she is tall and white, I am black and vertically challenged. Ironically, coming from a past where difference was the instrument of division, it is our sameness that is now the cause of distress. My wife and I are both women.”

Patience Agbabi (1965) – Born in London to Nigerian parents and from an early age was fostered by a white 

English family. She had a lot of contact with her Nigerian parents. This was a common practice at the time. Agbabi feels lucky to have had two sets of parents. Her upbringing allowed her to move easily between two cultures. She is a poet and a performer. Her poetry has been featured on television and radio. In 2000, she was one of ten poets commissioned by BBC Radio 4 to write a poem for National Poetry Day. Agbabi is a former Poet Laureate of Canterbury. In 2017 she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She describes herself as “bi-cultural” and bisexual. Issues of racial and sexual identity are important in her poetry.

Irshad Manji (1968) – NY Univ. director of “Moral Courage Project.” Born in Kampala, Uganda, the family 

moved to Canada when she was 4. She grew up attending both a secular and an Islamic religious school. She was expelled from her religious school for asking too many questions.  Her book, The Trouble with Islam Today has been published in more than 30 languages. She was named by “The Jakarta Post” as one of three women making a positive change in Islam today. She was also awarded Oprah Winfrey’s first annual Chutzpah Award for “audacity, nerve, boldness and conviction”. She is openly lesbian.

1973 – Twenty year old French actress and star of The Last Tango in Paris, Maria Schneider(27 March 1952 – 3 February 2011)admits to the New York Times that she is bisexual, stating “I’ve had quite a few lovers for my age. More men than women…women I love more for beauty than for sex.  Men I love for grace and intelligence.” Schneider came out as bisexual. In early 1976, she abandoned the film set of Caligula and checked herself into a mental hospital in Rome for several days to be with her lover, photographer Joan Townsend. 1821 – The first female physician in the U.S., Elizabeth Blackwell (3 February 1821 – 31 May 1910)was born near Bristol, England. As a girl, her family moved to New York State. She was awarded her MD by the Medical Institute of Geneva, New York, in 1849. She then established a hospital in New York City run by an all-female staff. She was also active in training women to be nurses for service in the U.S. Civil War. 1874 – Lesbian writer Gertrude Stein (February 3, 1874 – July 27, 1946) was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She was an American novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector. Multifaceted, complicated, and impenetrable, Stein was like the cubist paintings she admired so much. She once summed up her long life with partner Alice B. Toklas  (April 30, 1877 – March 7, 1967) by writing “I love my love because she is peculiar.”

 Stein moved to Paris in 1903, making France her home for the remainder of her life. A literary innovator and pioneer of Modernist literature, Stein’s work broke with the narrative, linear, and temporal conventions of the 19th-century. She was also known as a collector of Modernist art. In 1933, Stein published a kind of memoir of her Paris years, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, written in the voice of Toklas, her life partner. The book became a literary bestseller and brought Stein into the light of mainstream attention. She met Alice B. Toklas on September 8, 1907, on Toklas’s first day in Paris, at Michael and Sarah Stein’s apartment. In the 1980’s, a cabinet in the Yale University Beinecke Library, which had been locked for an indeterminate number of

In 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Davies number 91 in the list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” In 1996, Davies published an autobiography, Kink, in which he talked about his brief period of bisexuality in the late 1960s. and toured with Brooks, as well as playing and singing backup on four of his albums. In a 1993 interview with Barbara Walters, Brooks accidentally outed Smittle as being a lesbian. In the interview, Brooks stated, “Where the gay issue has hit me the most is my sister. I’ve lived with that forever. Vargas is the founder of Define America, a nonprofit organization to open up dialogue about the criteria people use to determine who is an American. He said: “I am an American. 1711, Austria – The great Austrian statesman Prince Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz (2 February 1711 – 27 June 1794)was born in Vienna. 1859, UK – Havelock Ellis (2 February 1859 – 8 July 1939) was born in Croydon, England. He was an English physician, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. He was co-author of the first medical textbook in English on homosexuality in 1897, and also published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as transgender psychology. He is credited with introducing the notions of narcissism and autoeroticism, later adopted by psychoanalysis. Ellis was among the pioneering investigators of psychedelic drugs and the author of one of the first written reports to the public about an experience with mescaline, which he conducted on himself in 1896. Like many intellectuals of his era, he supported eugenics and he served as president of the Eugenics Society. It was founded during the 1st European Transgender Council as “European Transgender Network” in Vienna. Today, TGEU is a European third sector, umbrella organization which works towards the full equality and inclusion of all trans people in Europe. 01-31-1900 – 07-23-1982 Betty Parsons (Born Betty Bierne Pierson) – Born in New York City, New York. She was an American artist, art dealer, and collector, known for her early promotion of Abstract Expressionism. In 1920, she married Schuyler Livingston Parson, a rich, alcoholic gay man. 

After the couple divorced in 1923, Betty Parsons, as she was called for the rest of her life, moved to Paris. For the eight or ten years that she lived in France, she had an affair with the English painter Adge Baker. The two women shared a house together for six years on Rue Boulard in Montparnasse. They would remain friends for the rest of her life. Parsons moved back to the U.S. in 1933. During the McCarthy years she went back into the closet, but supported gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists during this time of oppression. From the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s, she was involved with actress and painter, Strelsa van Scriver. In 1946, she opened the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City and exhibited for the first time publicly Abstract Expressionist. The gallery became one of the most prestigious of the mid-twentieth century. It closed in 1981, a year before Parson’s death.

1902 – American actress Tallulah Bankhead (January 31, 1902 – December 12, 1968) was born in Huntsville, Alabama. She was an American actress of the stage and screen. Bankhead was known for her husky voice, outrageous personality, and devastating wit. Originating some of the 20th century theater’s preeminent roles in comedy and melodrama, she gained acclaim as an actress on both sides of the Atlantic. Bankhead became an icon of the tempestuous, flamboyant actress, and her unique voice and mannerisms are often subject to imitation and parody. In her personal life, Bankhead struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and was infamous for her uninhibited sex life. Rumors about Bankhead’s sex life have lingered for years, and she was linked romantically with many notable female personalities of the day, including Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Cornell, Eva Le Gallienne, Hope Williams, Beatrice Lillie, and Alla Nazimova, as well as writer Mercedes de Acosta and singer Billie Holiday. Discrimination based on sexual orientation, including gender identity, will be illegal in employment, housing, public accommodations [including schools], credit and lending, and insurance. All employers with eight or more employees, except tribes and religious non-profit institutions, are covered by the law.” It is still perfectly legal in 36 states to discriminate in employment or at school against someone you perceive to be transgender. In thirty of those states it is still legal to discriminate against someone you think is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

1858 – Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson (January 29, 1858 – July 23, 1942) is born. He was an American author who used the pseudonym of Xavier Mayne. In 1908, he published the first American defense of homosexuality entitled The Intersexes: A History of Similisexualism as a Problem in Social Life.

01-29-1927 – 04-06-2013   Don Shirley – Born in Pensacola, Florida. He was 

an American classical and jazz pianist, as well as a composer. Shirley recorded many albums for Cadence Record Company during the 1950s and 1960s, experimenting with jazz with a classical influence. His compositions included organ symphonies, piano and cello concertos, a one act opera, and string quartets. During the 1960s, Shirley went on tour, some venues were in Southern states. He hired New York-nightclub bouncer Tony “Lip” Vallelonga as his driver and bodyguard. Their story has been made into the 2018 film Green Book. The screenplay was written by Tony Vallelonga’s son, 

Nick, Peter Farrelly, and Brian Currie. Nick used letters written by his father and Shirley that were sent to “Lips” wife, Dolores. The scene in the film depicting Shirley being handcuffed to a YMCA shower by a cop that discovered him having sex with another man is factual. In the 1980s, Nick told Shirley and his father that he wanted to make a movie about their experiences together. Shirley told him to do it but to wait until after he was no longer around. “You should put in everything your father told you, and everything I told you,” Nick recalls Shirley telling him. “You tell exactly the truth, but you’re going to wait until I pass.” Nick believes that Shirley wanted him to wait because Shirley worried that telling the true story would out his sexuality. Shirley passed away from heart disease in April 2013, less that five months after “Lip” died.

Her Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Literature was earned from the University of Southern California. As a self-identified lesbian, Davenport incorporates anecdotes from her life that revolve around her relationships with women. She has published eight books of poetry and gives performances at colleges. Davenport lives in Cleveland, Georgia.

01-29-1960 – 01-29-1986 Gia Marie Carangi – Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, She was an American fashion model during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Considered by some to be the first supermodel, she was featured on the cover of 

fashion magazines, including four international editions of Vogue and multiple issues of Cosmopolitan between 1979 and 1982. Her first major shoot, published in October 1978, was with top fashion photographer Chris von Wangenheim, who had her pose nude behind a chain-link fence with makeup artist Sandy Linter. Gia became infatuated with Linter and pursued her, though the relationship never went anywhere. Gia also appeared in advertising campaigns for Armani, Christian Dior, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. She became addicted to 

heroin and later contracted HIV and died of AIDS-related complications. One of Carangi’s friends later spoke of her “tomboy persona” describing her relaxed openness about her sexuality as reminiscent of the character Cay in the 1985 film Desert Hearts. In 1998, Gia, a biographical television film starring Angelina Jolie, debuted on HBO. He was raised by his adoptive parents, Frances and Peter Louganis, in Southern California. He is an American Olympic diver, LGBT activist, and author. During the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, he won gold medals on both the springboard and platform. He is the only male 

and second diver in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. He has been called both “the greatest American diver” and “probably the greatest diver in history.” From 1983 to 1989, Louganis was in a romantic relationship with his manager, R. James “Jim” Babbitt. Louganis said the relationship was abusive, saying at one point in 1983, Babbitt raped him at knifepoint. Babbitt also infected him with HIV. In 1995, in an interview with Barbara Walters, Louganis spoke publicly for the first time about being gay and HIV-positive. In June 2013, Louganis announced his engagement to paralegal Johnny Chaillot in People magazine. They married on October 12,2013. Louganis is a gay rights activist, as well as an HIV awareness advocate and has worked with the Human Rights Campaign to defend the civil liberties of the LGBT community and people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. She is an advocate for the transgender community. She has traveled over a million miles, to 28 different nations bringing her message of hope, understanding, and respect. Lynn has spoken to almost every University in England and the United States. Lynn’s presentation is an upbeat hour and a half of honest, emotional, and revealing history of her journey as a parent who turned to activism when her children were taken from her because she transitioned. A Texas Court removed her name from her son’s birth certificate because she is transgender. Sometimes funny, sometimes factual, and always sincere, she answers all questions with honesty and candor. She is a Global Ambassador for the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana, a Stonewall School Role Model, a speaker for the National Health Service in England, and a collaborator with colleagues from the University of Oxford on a project to help further the understanding of transgender and gender non-conforming youth.
