People magazine reported that Barry Manilow secretly married his manager, Garry Kief, sometime during 2014. The publication’s sources said that Barry and Garry invited “20 to 30 guests” to Manilow’s Palm Springs house under the guise of a luncheon, which turned out to be a wedding ceremony.


2016

Bruce Springsteen canceled a concert in Greensboro, North Carolina to protest the state’s passing of the controversial Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act. Also known as the “bathroom bill”, the Act said that transgender people must use rest rooms associated with the sex noted on their birth certificate.

Wham! became the first western pop group to perform live in China, when they played at the workers gymnasium in Beijing. Several solo performers had played China before.

Prince ended his 32-city tour in Miami, FL, and said that he was withdrawing from live performances for “an indeterminate number of years.” He later returned to live performing.

1990
Elton John sang “Candle in the Wind” for Ryan White, a boy with AIDS who died a day later.

1998

George Michael was arrested at The Will Rogers Memorial Park for committing a sex act in a public toilet. He was arrested by undercover Beverly Hills police officer Marcelo Rodriguez. Michael later said; “I was followed into the restroom and this cop – well, I didn’t know he was a cop at the time obviously started playing this game. I think it’s called – I’ll show you mine, you show me yours, and then when you show me yours, I’m gonna nick you!” The singer was later fined $810 (£500) after being convicted of a “lewd act.”

1999

Shania Twain became the first female to sell 10 million copies of back-to-back albums (The Woman in Me and Come On Over). (Note: some websites state that this occurred on April 11. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) certified Come On Over at 10 million on April 7.)

Olivia Newton-John began a 21-day, 141-mile walk along the entire length of the Great Wall of China to raise funds for breast cancer research.

2010

Singer Whitney Houston was released from a Paris hospital after suffering a respiratory infection. She called media reports that she was using drugs again “ridiculous.”

2016
The final episode of the final season of “American Idol” was aired. the show would have had many lgbtq2 contestants with Adam Lampert being the most famous.

Selena was killed by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar, a lesbian. Saldivar had been fired for embezzlement.

2002
Celine Dion began the first of four weeks at the top of the U.K. Album chart with A New Day Has Come.

2010
Cher’s first child, Chaz Bono, asked a judge to formally change his name and gender following the sex change surgery he had last year. The 41-year-old, who was born Chastity Sun Bono, became Chaz Salvatore according to a petition filed in Los Angeles. Salvatore was his father Sonny Bono’s real first name.

Two days after an emotional public prayer service in Nashville attended by about 25,000 people, Patsy Cline was buried quietly at Shenandoah Memorial Park in her hometown of Winchester, Virginia.

An anti-abortion activist was arrested after allegedly making threats on Elton John’s life. The man was upset because the singer had suggested that Jesus Christ was gay in a Parade magazine interview.

Joni Sledge, a part of the trio known as Sister Sledge, died of natural causes at the age of 60. The group is most often remembered for their 1979 Disco hit, “We Are Family”.

Cher started her own weekly hour of a music and comedy show premiered on CBS with guest stars Elton John and Bette Midler. The series lasted for two seasons.. The singer had co-presented The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour with her former husband. Cher’s new show featured a female guest each week.

The film ABBA: The Movie has its UK premiere at Leicester Square’s Warner Theatre.

Barry Manilow was on top of the Adult Contemporary chart with “When I Wanted You”. It was his 17th AC hit, and an incredible 16 of those had gone Top 10 with 10 #1’s in just six years of his career.

Queen was up to #2 although many stations already had “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” #1.

1985
“Careless Whisper” by Wham! began a three week stay at the top of the Billboard chart. An 18-year-old George Michael had written the melody four years earlier while riding on a bus.

Wham! hit #1 with “Careless Whisper”.

1990

Singer k.d. lang was pictured on the cover of the first issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

Whitney Houston had her 8th #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 13 releases with “All the Man That I Need”

Queen, which was always bigger in their native England, scored their seventh #1 album in the U.K. with Innuendo.

2001

Sex researcher/author William Masters, of the research and writing team of Masters and (Virginia) Johnson, died of Parkinson’s disease at the age of 85. (Human Sexual Response, Human Sexual Inadequacy)

2006

Elton John accepted undisclosed libel damages from the Britain’s Sunday Times after the newspaper erroneously repeated an entirely false rumor that he acted in a rude, self-important and arrogant manner at a charity ball.

2015
Leslie Gore, who placed eleven songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1963 and 1967, including “It’s My Party”, “Judy’s Turn To Cry”, She’s A Fool” and “You Don’t Own Me”, died of cancer at the age of 68.

\ American singer, songwriter, actress and activist, Lesley Gore, died of lung cancer aged 68. She is best known for the 1963 US No.1 & UK No.9 single ‘It’s My Party’ which was produced by Quincy Jones. Gore composed songs for the soundtrack of the 1980 film Fame, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for ‘Out Here on My Own’, written with her brother Michael.

David Bowie released ‘Sound and Vision’ as a single, which was taken from his latest album Low. ‘Sound and Vision’ was used by the BBC in the UK on trailers at the time, providing considerable exposure, much needed as Bowie opted to do nothing to promote the single himself, and helped the song to No.3 on the UK charts.

The Smiths were at No.1 in the UK indie charts with ‘Shoplifters Of The World Unite.’ The title alludes to the communist slogan “Workers of the world, unite!”, and the 1966 David and Jonathan hit ‘Lovers of the World Unite’. The photograph on the sleeve is of a young Elvis Presley. (who’s mother’s maiden name was Smith)

72-year-old Barry Manilow was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after suffering what was described as “complications from emergency oral surgery” that he had undergone earlier in the week. His One Last Time tour had to be put on hold and concerts in Kentucky and Tennessee were canceled. To the surprise of many, just three days later Barry was well enough to attend Clive Davis’ pre-Grammys party in L.A. where he performed “Mandy” as well as “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart” from his latest album, “My Dream Duets”.

Culture Club released the single “Karma Chameleon”.

1987
George Michael went to No.1 on the UK album chart with his debut solo album ‘Faith’. The album won several awards including the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1989. To date, the album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Between 1987 and 1988, Faith produced six Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 hits, four of which (‘Faith’, ‘Father Figure’, ‘One More Try’, and ‘Monkey’) reached No.1, making him the only British male singer to have four No.1 singles from one LP on the Billboard Hot 100.

Although they had been divorced for twelve years, Sonny and Cher appear together on The Late Show, where they are coaxed by David Letterman into singing “I Got You Babe”. The crowd gave the pair a standing ovation for what would prove to be their final performance together, as Sonny would die in a skiing accident in 1998.

1990

The Who‘s Pete Townshend confesses his bisexuality to Newsweek magazine. Says Pete, “I know how it feels to be a woman because I am a woman. And I won’t be classified as just a man”.
