Elton John made an appearance on American Idol‘s Idol Gives Back, where he seemed to struggle vocally to get through his 1970 composition “Your Song”. Also appearing were Jeff Beck, Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood.

After a Saturday Night Live skit parodied his latest film, God’s Not Dead 2, Pat Boone asserted that SNL is hostile towards Christians.

Appearing on the Glenn Beck radio show, Boone said “I’d like to ask Lorne Michaels: If somebody did a funny sketch and portrayed his mother as a diseased whore, would he find that funny, or would there be some limit to what he and the show can ridicule?”

After receiving some bad reviews and even enduring some boos during her performance, Whitney Houston brushed off criticism of her first show in the UK in over eleven years by insisting she was playing to a “tough crowd”. She had recently been hospitalized with chronic rhinopharyngitis, which is a swelling of the membranes in the nose and throat.

Singer Melissa Etheridge and her partner, actress Tammy Lynn Michaels, announced their separation, seven years after bonding in a commitment ceremony. Michaels gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, in 2006.

Elton John sang “Candle in the Wind” for Ryan White, a boy with AIDS who died a day later.

1998

George Michael was arrested at The Will Rogers Memorial Park for committing a sex act in a public toilet. He was arrested by undercover Beverly Hills police officer Marcelo Rodriguez. Michael later said; “I was followed into the restroom and this cop – well, I didn’t know he was a cop at the time obviously started playing this game. I think it’s called – I’ll show you mine, you show me yours, and then when you show me yours, I’m gonna nick you!” The singer was later fined $810 (£500) after being convicted of a “lewd act.”

Shania Twain became the first female to sell 10 million copies of back-to-back albums (The Woman in Me and Come On Over). (Note: some websites state that this occurred on April 11. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) certified Come On Over at 10 million on April 7.)
