1914 – Author William S. Burroughs (February 5, 1914 – August 2, 1997) was born in St Louis. Burroughs was a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author whose influence is considered to have affected a range of popular culture as well as literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. He shunned the wealth of his business machine-making family to work a number of jobs but his most famous accomplishment was as a writer. His addiction to drugs led to his first novel Junkie; the highlight was his 1959 hit Naked Lunch, a highly controversial work that was the subject of a court case after it was challenged as being in violation of the U.S. sodomy laws. The 25th anniversary edition of Queer published in 2010, edited by Oliver Harris, called into question Burroughs’s claim, and clarified the importance for Queer of Burroughs’s traumatic relationship with the boyfriend fictionalized in the story as Eugene Allerton.

02-05-1960 Nayland Blake – Born in New York City, New York. He is an African-American artist. Born to an African-American father and an Irish-American mother

at a time when such marriages were outlawed in many parts of the United States. Blake considers himself to be a black man even though he easily passes for white. His art work is in a variety of medias and reflects his preoccupation with his racial and sexual identities. Interracial desire, same-sex love, racial and sexualy bigotry, and the human body are all recurrent themes. His work is in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whiteny Museum of American Art, among others. Through his work as an artist and teacher, Blake has been an important influence on LGBT art, art scholarships, and artists.

Beginning at 11 p.m., more than 150 police simultaneously raided the Club Baths, the Romans II Health and Recreation Spa, the Richmond Street Health Emporium (heavily damaged, it never reopened), and, for the second time, the Barracks. The raids marked a turning point for Toronto’s gay community; as the protests that followed indicated, people weren’t willing to endure derogatory treatment deriding their lifestyle from the police or from any others in spheres of influence, causing more than one participant to consider this the Canadian Stonewall

1982 -The film Personal Best opens in New York City. It depicts two women, Mariel Hemingway and Patrice Donnelly, as competing athletes who have a lesbian affair while training for the Olympics.

1988 – Arizona Governor Evan Mecham, who at the beginning of his administration tried to purge lesbians and gay men from state government, is impeached by the Arizona House of Representatives.

02-05-1993 Last Call at Maud’s – Documentary directed by Paris Poirier. From 1966 to 1989, Maud’s was a San Francisco bar for lesbians. The film covers the

background leading up to the opening of Maud’s; how lesbians discovered their sexual orientation and had few places to socialize; the foundation of the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955; the need for alternatives to gay men’s bars; the police raids in the 1950s and much more. The film interviews Ricky Stretcher, the owner of Maud’s and how she designed and operated the bar. Insights expressed by the patrons and the bartenders of the bar show what it was like to be a lesbian in the 1940s and 1950s. The film preserves an era in history when bars were the only social gathering place in the lesbian community.

1849-1896   We’wha – He was a Zuni Native American from New Mexico. He was a famous Lhamana, a traditional Zuni gender role, now described as mixed-gender or Two-Spirit. Lhamana were men who lived in part as women, wearing a mixture of women’s and men’s clothing and doing a great deal of women’s work, as well as serving as mediators. We’wha is known historically mainly for the fact that she was a man but chose to live out his life as a woman. He/she was well respected in the tribe.

1923, Austria – Nazi thugs fire guns into a Vienna homophile gathering attended by Magnus Hirschfeld (14 May 1868 – 14 May 1935)and wound a number of people in the crowd. Hirschfeld was a German Jewish physician and sexologist educated primarily in Germany; he based his practice in Berlin-Charlottenburg. An outspoken advocate for sexual minorities, Hirschfeld founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee. Historian Dustin Goltz characterized this group as having carried out “the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights“.

1915- On a speaking tour, Edith Lees Ellis (1861-Sept. 14, 1916), open lesbian wife of Havelock Ellis (2 February 1859 – 8 July 1939), exhorts women to begin “organizing a new love world.” She was an English writer and women’s rights activist. From the beginning, their marriage was unconventional; at the end of the honeymoon Havelock went back to his bachelor rooms and Edith had several affairs with women, of which her husband was aware. Their open marriage was the central subject in Havelock Ellis’s autobiography, My Life(1939).

1934 — Eleanor Roosevelt (October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962) writes to her lover journalist Lorena Hickok (March 7, 1893 – May 1, 1968)about how lucky they. “Someday perhaps fate will be kind & let us arrange a life more to our liking [but] for the time being we are lucky to have what we have. Dearest, we are happy together and strong relationships have to grow deep roots.” The nature of Hickok and Roosevelt’s relationship has been a subject of dispute among historians. Roosevelt was close friends with several lesbian couples, such as suffragistsand educators Nancy Cook (August 26, 1884 – August 16, 1962)and Marion Dickerman(April 11, 1890 – May 16, 1983), and  educator Esther Lape (October 8, 1881 – May 17, 1981)and scholar and suffragist  Elizabeth Fisher Read(1872 – December 13, 1943), suggesting that she understood lesbianism; Marie Souvestre(28 April 1830 – 30 March 1905), Roosevelt’s childhood teacher and a great influence on her later thinking, was also a lesbian

1938 – Gay writer and historian Martin Greif (February 4, 1938 – November 17, 1996) was born in New York City. He was an American editor, lecturer, publisher and writer.A prolific writer, Greif was one of the first people to compile a history of gays and lesbians and biographies of some of the most illustrious people in time. Main Street Press was founded in 1978 by Greif and his life partner, Lawrence Grow, in Clinton, New Jersey. Grow died of a stroke associated with AIDS in 1991. Greif died of an AIDS-related illness in November 1996.

Gregory Woods (1953) – Born in Egypt. He is a British poet that grew up in Ghana. Since 1990 he has taught at Nottingham Trent University, where in 1998 he was 

appointed Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies, the first such appointment in the United Kingdom. On retirement, he was appointed Emeritus Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies. His main areas of interest are twentieth-century gay and lesbian literature; post-war gay and lesbian films, cultural studies, and the AIDS epidemic. In addition to his poetry collections, he is the author of a number of books. According to poet Sinéad Morrissey, “Probably, the finest gay poet in the United Kingdom.”

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

Pauline Park (1960) – Born in Korea and adopted by European American parents. She is an activist for transgender rights. In 1997, Park co-founded Queens Pride

 House, a center for the LGBT communities of Queens, and Iban/Queer Koreans of New York.  In 1998, Park co-founded the NY Assoc. for Gender Rights Advocacy, the first statewide transgender advocacy organization in New York. She negotiated inclusion of gender identity and expression in the Dignity for All Students Ace, a safe schools bill enacted by the New York State Legislature in 2010. Park was adopted by European American parents and raised in the United States. In an interview, she said, “I think I knew when I was four or so before I even knew the word. It’s a funny story. When I went to kindergarten, the first day all the girls were wearing stretch pants with stirrups, remember those? I thought they were so cute and I wanted some. I remember when I came home and asked for some my mother was shocked. That was when I began to understand that certain things were for girls and certain things were for boys. And I began to recognize that as a child I couldn’t be who I was until I was an adult.”

Mpho Andrea Tutu (1963) – Born in London, England. She is the youngest daughter of Desmond Tutu. Her father ordained her a priest of the Episcopal Church in 2004. Mpho and her father wrote the book Made for Goodness

(2010) based on the belief that all people are basically good and that by spreading the message of peace and goodwill that changes can be made. She was married to Joseph Burris and had two children with him. The couple divorced. In late 2015, she married her long-time Dutch girlfriend, Dr. Marceline van Furth in a small private ceremony in the Netherlands, but the couple went public in January 2016 when they had a wedding celebration in Cape Town, South Africa. Her marriage meant that she lost her license to practice as a priest. Same-sex marriage was legalized in South Africa in 2006, but the church does not recognize those

marriages. Cape Town bishop Raphael Hess said he was “vexed” by the need for Tutu-van Furth to renounce her clerical duties, but he hoped it would be short-lived. Speaking to South Africa’s City Press from her honeymoon in Bali, Mpho noted the “irony” of being censored for her similarities to her spouse rather than her differences, as South Africans once were under apartheid. Mpho stated, “My wife and I meet across almost every dimension of difference. Some of our differences are obvious; she is tall and white, I am black and vertically challenged. Ironically, coming from a past where difference was the instrument of division, it is our sameness that is now the cause of distress. My wife and I are both women.”

Patience Agbabi (1965) – Born in London to Nigerian parents and from an early age was fostered by a white 

English family. She had a lot of contact with her Nigerian parents. This was a common practice at the time. Agbabi feels lucky to have had two sets of parents. Her upbringing allowed her to move easily between two cultures. She is a poet and a performer. Her poetry has been featured on television and radio. In 2000, she was one of ten poets commissioned by BBC Radio 4 to write a poem for National Poetry Day. Agbabi is a former Poet Laureate of Canterbury. In 2017 she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She describes herself as “bi-cultural” and bisexual. Issues of racial and sexual identity are important in her poetry.

Irshad Manji (1968) – NY Univ. director of “Moral Courage Project.” Born in Kampala, Uganda, the family 

moved to Canada when she was 4. She grew up attending both a secular and an Islamic religious school. She was expelled from her religious school for asking too many questions.  Her book, The Trouble with Islam Today has been published in more than 30 languages. She was named by “The Jakarta Post” as one of three women making a positive change in Islam today. She was also awarded Oprah Winfrey’s first annual Chutzpah Award for “audacity, nerve, boldness and conviction”. She is openly lesbian.

During sessions at Trident Studios, London, England, David Bowie recorded ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’, ‘Starman’ and ‘Suffragette City’, the last songs recorded for the The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album.

1973 – Twenty year old French actress and star of The Last Tango in Paris, Maria Schneider(27 March 1952 – 3 February 2011)admits to the New York Times that she is bisexual, stating “I’ve had quite a few lovers for my age. More men than women…women I love more for beauty than for sex.  Men I love for grace and intelligence.” Schneider came out as bisexual. In early 1976, she abandoned the film set of Caligula and checked herself into a mental hospital in Rome for several days to be with her lover, photographer Joan Townsend. Schneider died of breast cancer on 3 February 2011 at age 58

1974

1975, Canada – Police raid Sauna Aquarius in Montreal and arrest thirty-six people as found-ins in a common bawdyhouse. It was the beginning of a police “clean-up” for the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

1978

1981 – Congressman Jon Hinson (R-Mississippi)(March 16, 1942 – July 21, 1995) is arrested for performing an act of “oral sodomy” with a twenty-eight-year-old man in the restroom of a House of Representatives office building. He pleads no contest and is given a thirty-day suspended sentence. Following his 1981 resignation, he became an LGBT activist in metropolitan Washington D.C.Hinson died of respiratory failure resulting from AIDS in Silver Spring, Maryland, at the age of fifty-three.

1982

The inaugural British Phonographic Industry Awards are held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” is given the nod as Best British Single, Adam And The Ants win Best British Album for “Kings Of The Wild Frontier” and John Lennon is honored posthumously for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.

1984

Culture Club started a three-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Karma Chameleon’ the group’s 5th US Top 10 hit, also a No.1 in the UK.

1987 – Author Randy Shilts‘ (August 8, 1951 – February 17, 1994) investigative journalism book And the Band Played On is published. It chronicles the 1980–1985 discovery and spread of HIV/AIDS, government indifference, and political infighting in the United States to what was initially perceived as a gay disease. Shilts himself would die of the disease on February 17, 1994.

1987 – Liberace (May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987)dies at the age of 62 in Palm Springs from AIDS-related illnesses. Just two weeks earlier his publicists had denied a Las Vegas Sunstory which claimed he had the disease. He is buried in the Los Angeles Forest Lawn Cemetery. Władziu Valentino Liberace wasknown as Liberace. He was an American pianist, singer, and actor. A child prodigy and the son of working-class immigrants, Liberace enjoyed a career spanning four decades of concerts, recordings, television, motion pictures, and endorsements. At the height of his fame, from the 1950s to the 1970s, Liberace was the highest-paid entertainer in the world, with established residencies in Las Vegas, and an international touring schedule. Liberace embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage, acquiring the sobriquet “Mr. Showmanship.” In 1982, Scott Thorson(born January 23, 1959), Liberace’s 22-year-old former chauffeur and live-in lover of five years, sued the pianist for $113 million in palimonyafter he was let go by Liberace. Liberace continued to deny that he was homosexual and HIV-positive, and during court depositions in 1984, he insisted that Thorson was never his lover. The case was settled out of court in 1986, with Thorson receiving a $75,000 cash settlement, plus three cars and three pet dogs worth another $20,000. Thorson stated after Liberace’s death that he settled because he knew that Liberace was dying and that he had intended to sue based on conversion of property rather than palimony. In a 2011 interview, actress and close friend Betty White stated that Liberace was indeed gay and that she was often used as a beard by his managers to counter public rumors of the musician’s homosexuality. Behind the Candelabra, a film adaptation of Scott Thorson’s autobiography debuted on HBO in May 2013.Michael Douglas stars as Liberace, with Matt Damon playing Thorson, in a story centered on the relationship the two shared and its aftermath.

2004 – The Massachusetts high court rules that only full, equal marriage rights for gay couples, not civil unions, would be constitutional. “The history of our nation has demonstrated that separate is seldom, if ever, equal,” an advisory opinion from the four justices who ruled in favor of gay marriage stated. A bill creating only civil unions, not full marriage rights, would be “unconstitutional, inferior, and discriminatory status for same-sex couples.”

The United Nations Postal Administration issued a set of six commemorative stamps to promote UN Free & Equal — a global UN campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality launched and led by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The new stamps, which celebrate the diversity of the LGBT community, mark the first time the UN has issued stamps with this theme. 01-31-1900 – 07-23-1982 Betty Parsons (Born Betty Bierne Pierson) – Born in New York City, New York. She was an American artist, art dealer, and collector, known for her early promotion of Abstract Expressionism. In 1920, she married Schuyler Livingston Parson, a rich, alcoholic gay man. 

After the couple divorced in 1923, Betty Parsons, as she was called for the rest of her life, moved to Paris. For the eight or ten years that she lived in France, she had an affair with the English painter Adge Baker. The two women shared a house together for six years on Rue Boulard in Montparnasse. They would remain friends for the rest of her life. Parsons moved back to the U.S. in 1933. During the McCarthy years she went back into the closet, but supported gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists during this time of oppression. From the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s, she was involved with actress and painter, Strelsa van Scriver. In 1946, she opened the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City and exhibited for the first time publicly Abstract Expressionist. The gallery became one of the most prestigious of the mid-twentieth century. It closed in 1981, a year before Parson’s death.

1902 – American actress Tallulah Bankhead (January 31, 1902 – December 12, 1968) was born in Huntsville, Alabama. She was an American actress of the stage and screen. Bankhead was known for her husky voice, outrageous personality, and devastating wit. Originating some of the 20th century theater’s preeminent roles in comedy and melodrama, she gained acclaim as an actress on both sides of the Atlantic. Bankhead became an icon of the tempestuous, flamboyant actress, and her unique voice and mannerisms are often subject to imitation and parody. In her personal life, Bankhead struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and was infamous for her uninhibited sex life. Rumors about Bankhead’s sex life have lingered for years, and she was linked romantically with many notable female personalities of the day, including Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Cornell, Eva Le Gallienne, Hope Williams, Beatrice Lillie, and Alla Nazimova, as well as writer Mercedes de Acosta and singer Billie Holiday. Actress Patsy Kelly confirmed she had a sexual relationship with Bankhead when she worked for her as a personal assistant. Bankhead never publicly described herself as being bisexual. She did, however, describe herself as “ambisextrous”.

As a high profile figure, who was openly lesbian, she helped open doors for other Dutch lesbians. At the age of 55, she died of a cerebral embolism. 01-31-1908 – 12-16-1992 Erica Brausen – Born in Düsseldorf, Germany. She was an art dealer and established the Hanover Gallery in London in 1946. Brausen supported several influential contemporary artists, including Francis Bacon. As a German national, she

encountered many difficulties and restrictions. A gay artist friend married her which allowed her to work legally. From 1946 until 1973, the Hanover Gallery was among the most influential galleries in Europe. Other artists that the galley represented included Alberto Giacometti, Lucian Freud, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Henry Moore. Brausen was a lesbian and her life partner was Catharina “Toto” Koopman, a one-time Chanel model and film actress. The two met in 1945. Koopman helped Brausen run the Hanover Gallery and the two women lived openly together until Koopman’s death in 1991.

Discrimination based on sexual orientation, including gender identity, will be illegal in employment, housing, public accommodations [including schools], credit and lending, and insurance. All employers with eight or more employees, except tribes and religious non-profit institutions, are covered by the law.” It is still perfectly legal in 36 states to discriminate in employment or at school against someone you perceive to be transgender. In thirty of those states it is still legal to discriminate against someone you think is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

1907 – Frances V. Rummell (Nov. 11, 1907 – May 11, 1969) is born. She was an educator and a teacher of French at Stephens College. Using the nom de plume Diana Fredericks, she wrote the book Diana: A Strange Autobiography in 1939 which was the first explicitly lesbian autobiography in which two women end up happily together. 1513, Panama – Spanish conquistador Vasco Nunez de Balboa discovers a community of cross-dressing males in present-day Panama and, according to reports, feeds at least 40 of them to his dogs.

1698, England – William Minton, a 19 year old servant, is used as bait to entrap Capt. Edward Rigby, the first homosexual victim of entrapment by the Society for the Reformation of Manners. He was tried for sodomy. These Societies were formed in Tower Hamlets, London, in 1690, with their primary object being the suppression of bawdy houses and profanity. A network of moral guardians was set up, with four stewards in each ward of the City of London, two for each parish, and a committee, whose business it was to gather the names and addresses of offenders against morality, and to keep minutes of their misdeeds. By 1699 there were nine such societies, and by 1701 there were nearly 20 in London, plus others in the provinces, all corresponding with one another and gathering information and arranging for prosecutions.

The Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) was founded in New York City on December 21, 1969, almost six months after the Stonewall riots, by dissident members of the Gay Liberation Front(GLF). Some early members included Jim Owles, Marty Robinson, Tom Doerr(1947 – August 2, 1987) (who introduced the lambda symbol into the gay movement. 1974 – Elaine Noble (born January 22, 1944) becomes the first openly gay or lesbian individual to be elected to a state legislature in the United States when she is elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Inspired by Noble, Minnesota state legislator Allan Spear comes out in a newspaper interview. In 1986 Noble and Ellen Ratner formed a LGBT alcohol and drug treatment center in Minneapolis called the Pride Institute. More recently she has worked as a healthcare administrator and a realtor. Noble had a relationship with writer Rita Mae Brown in the 1970s and has since retained privacy regarding her personal life. She lives in Florida

2004, Canada – A judge in Saskatchewan rules that same-sex couples have the right to marry in that province.

2008 – Strauss v. Horton, a legal challenge to Proposition 8, is filed. Proposition 8, known informally as Prop 8, was a California ballot proposition and a state constitutional amendment passed in the November 2008 California state elections. The proposition was created by opponents of same-sex marriage in advance of the California Supreme Court’s May 2008 appeal ruling, In re Marriage Cases, which followed the short-lived controversy and found the previous ban on same-sex marriage (Proposition 22, 2000) unconstitutional. Proposition 8 was ultimately ruled unconstitutional by a federal court (on different grounds) in 2010, although the court decision did not go into effect until June 26, 2013, following the conclusion of proponents’ appeals.

2009, Viet Nam – Pham le Quynh Tram, born intersex and assigned male at birth, successfully petitions the government for legal recognition as a woman. In 2013,  he People’s Committee of the southern province of Binh Phuoc ordered the local Department of Justice to revert to recognizing Tram as a male and to refer to her as Pham Van Hiep, her birth name. In addition to the Department of Justice rescinding Tram’s initial recognition, the officials who first approved it are reportedly ordered to be penalized.

2012

To mark the 60th anniversary of the UK singles chart the Official Charts Company published a chart which lists all the 123 songs that have sold more than a million copies since it began in 1952. Elton John was at No.1 with Candle In The Wind, No.2 was Band Aid with Do They Know It’s Christmas? followed by Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody on 2.36million copies.

2018

Box office figures showed that the Fredie Mercury biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody was the top money making film for the previous weekend with a total worldwide gross of $145.1 million, against a production budget of about $52 million. 1876 – Natalie Clifford Barney (October 31, 1876 – February 2, 1972), American playwright, poet and novelist, is born. She lives as an expatriate in Paris and is known as the Queen of the Paris Lesbians.

1896 – Jazz great and Oscar-nominated actress Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 – September 1, 1977) is born. She was an American singer and actress. Waters frequently performed jazz, big band, and pop music, on the Broadway stage and in concerts, but she began her career in the 1920s singing blues. Waters was the second African American, after Hattie McDaniel, to be nominated for an Academy Award. She was also the first African-American woman to be nominated for an Emmy Award, in 1962. Waters married three times, had no children and was bisexual.She was remarkably open (for her time) about her relationship with dancer Ethel Williams  (December 21, 1891-1961).

1964

  People gave Barbra Streisand her first #1 album, finally toppling the Beatles’ A Hard day’s Night after 14 weeks.

1968 – Silent film star Ramon Novarro (February 6, 1899 – October 30, 1968) is killed. He was a Mexican film, stage and television actor who began his career in silent films in 1917 and eventually became a leading man and one of the top box office attractions of the 1920s and early 1930s. Novarro was promoted by MGM as a “Latin lover” and became known as a sex symbol after the death of Rudolph Valentino. Novarro was troubled all his life by his conflicted feelings toward his Roman Catholic religion and his homosexuality. His body was found after being brutally murdered by hustler brothers Paul and Tom Ferguson, aged 22 and 17, who called him and offered their services. He had hired prostitutes from an agency to come to his Laurel Canyon home for sex previously, and the Fergusons obtained Novarro’s telephone number from a previous guest.

1969 – Sixty members of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Society for Individual Rights(SIR) stage a protest outside the offices of the San Francisco Examiner in response to another in a series of news articles disparaging LGBT people in San Francisco’s gay bars and clubs. The peaceful protest against the “homophobic editorial policies” of the Examiner turned tumultuous and were later called “Friday of the Purple Hand” and “Bloody Friday of the Purple Hand.” Examiner employees “dumped a bag of printers’ ink from the third story window of the newspaper building onto the crowd.” Some reports state that it was a barrel of ink poured from the roof of the building. The protesters “used the ink to scrawl ‘Gay Power’ and other slogans on the building walls” and stamp purple hand prints “throughout downtown San Francisco” resulting in “one of the most visible demonstrations of gay power.” According to Larry LittleJohn, then president of SIR, “At that point, the tactical squad arrived – not to get the employees who dumped the ink, but to arrest the demonstrators. Somebody could have been hurt if that ink had gotten into their eyes, but the police were knocking people to the ground.”The accounts of police brutality include women being thrown to the ground and protesters’ teeth being knocked out.

1969 – Time magazine runs a cover story entitled, “The Homosexual: Newly Visible, Newly Understood.” The author, Christopher Cory, presents a “case for greater tolerance of homosexuals” yet “emphasized the effeminate side of homosexuality to the exclusion of everyone else,” resulting in a protest at the Time-Life Building on November 12, 1969.

1969: In San Francisco, lesbians and gay men protest homophobic language in the Examiner. Newspaper employees respond by showering the demonstrators with purple ink. Violence ensues.

October 31, 1969

David Bowie appeared at a Halloween night at the General Gordon, Gravesend, England. The gig lasted about 15 minutes, after Bowie sang ‘Space Oddity’ to everyone’s delight and then dragged a stool on stage, along with a huge book. He then sat and read poems and was booed off stage.

1977, Canada – Halloween brings thousands of queer-bashers to Toronto’s Yonge Street looking for the annual drag parade. Gay representatives meet with police beforehand to try to prevent a crowd from gathering. Operation Jack-o’-Lantern, a gay street patrol, is organized to monitor situation but police do little to control crowd.

1980, Canada – For the first time, Toronto police do not allow queer-bashers and spectators to congregate outside St Charles Tavern to wait for drag queens. Traffic and pedestrians are kept moving with help of large numbers of police officers.

1980 – French-Canadian flight attendant Gaëtan Dugas (February 20, 1953 – March 30, 1984) pays his first known visit to New York City bathhouses. He would later be incorrectly deemed “Patient Zero” for his supposed connection to many early cases of AIDS in the United States. He was a French-Canadian flight attendant who was falsely linked by the CDC directly or indirectly to 40 of the first 248 reported cases of AIDS in the U.S. He was a relatively early HIV patient who once was widely regarded as “patient zero” for AIDS in the United States; his case was later found to have been only one of many that began in the 1970s, according to a September 2016 study published in Nature.

1987

Cher was named the year’s top female on tour by Billboard Magazine as her Farewell tour grossed $145 million and attracted 2.2 million fans to over 200 concerts.

630 B.C., Lesbos – Sappho is born c. (630 – 570 BC). The poet wrote beautiful poetry to the women she loved. It is because Sappho and her followers lived on the Isle of Lesbos that women who love women call themselves “lesbian” to this day. Sappho is known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung and accompanied by a lyre, and which is usually about the love and passion of women. Most of Sappho’s poetry is now lost, and what is extant has survived only in fragmentary form, except for one complete poem, the “Ode to Aphrodite.” Lesbian author Willa Cather (December 7, 1873 – April 24, 1947) wrote “Sappho wrote only of one theme, sang it, laughed it, sighed it, wept it, sobbed it. Save for her knowledge of human love she was unlearned, save for her perception of beauty she was blind, save for the fullness of her passions she was empty-handed.”

1824: The Marquis de Custine is beaten and left for dead after propositioning a male soldier in Saint-Denis. The scandal forces him out of the closet, but he recovers and lives the rest of his life as an open ‘sodomite’ with his partner Edward St. Barbe. Custine maintains a successful social life in Paris.

1885, Uganda – Mwanga II, King of Buganda (Uganda) resists Christianity coming to Uganda in part because he wishes to keep sodomy legal and to maintain his harem of young boys. Therefore, he has James Hannington, the first bishop of Africa, killed when he comes to Uganda.

1998: In Canada, Glen Murray is elected as mayor of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is the first openly gay man to be elected mayor of a major North American city

90s: Listserves and Email distribution replaces telephone trees for activism

1997 – Representatives from the National Black Lesbian and Gay Leadership Forum, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Latino/a Lesbian and Gay Organization, and the Gay Lesbian and Straight Educators Network met with House Democratic leader Richard Gephardt to discuss the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and funding for AIDS care and research. Gephardt met with them to discuss ways in which the party could assist gay and lesbian candidates through the coming election cycle.

1997 – Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) (born March 31, 1940) introduces a bill calling for the extension of health insurance coverage to the domestic partners of US federal employees through the federal employee health program. Frank, a resident of Newton, Massachusetts, was considered the most prominent gay politician in the United States.

1997 – Maryland’s Court of Special Appeals unanimously overturns Circuit Court Judge Lawrence H. Rushworth’s decision prohibiting a divorced gay man from seeing his children in the presence of his partner.

1999, Austria – Lesbian Ulrike Lunacek (born 26 May 1957) is the first openly gay member of Parliament of the National Council of Austria. She is a member of the Austrian Green Party, part of the European Green Party. In 2017, she was the top candidate for the national elections in Austria in 2017. She is co-president of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Substitute in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affair.

Post 9/11 – From “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

2002 – Former NFL linebacker Esera Tuaolo  (born July 11, 1968) comes out. He was a professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for nine years. He played college football at Oregon State University and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He won the Morris Trophy in 1989, which is given to the best defensive lineman in the Pac-10. He was named Pac-10 Conference First Team twice and as a senior he was a finalist for the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy. In 2002, having retired from sports, Tuaolo announced to the public that he is gay, coming out on HBO‘s Real Sports. This made him the third former NFL player to come out, after David Kopay (born June 28, 1942) and Roy Simmons (November 8, 1956 – February 20, 2014). Tuaolo, the child of Samoan banana farmers, lives in Minnesota with his life-partner, Mitchell Wherley, and their twins, Mitchell Jr. and Michelle.

The Matthew Shepard Act is passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on October 28th. The measure expands the 1969 U.S. Federal Hate Crime Law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Matthew Shepard was tortured and murdered near Laramie, Wyoming on October 7, 1998 because of his sexual orientation.

2011, Denmark – Axel Axgil (3 April 1915 – 29 October 2011), 96, whose struggle for gay rights helped make Denmark the first country to legalize same-sex partnerships, dies in Copenhagen. He and Eigil Axgil (24 April 1922 – 22 September 1995) were Danish gay activists and a longtime couple. They were the first gay couple to enter into a registered partnership anywhere in the world following Denmark‘s legalization of same-sex partnership registration in 1989, a landmark legislation which they were instrumental in bringing about. They adopted the shared surname, Axgil, a combination of their given names, as an expression of their commitment.

2012

Former Pop star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was held in custody at a London police station for ten hours as he was quizzed by officers probing the sex abuse scandal sparked by late British TV entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile. From the early ’70s until the mid-1980s, Glitter placed 18 songs in the UK Top 40.

2015 – Hollyoaks becomes the first UK soap to cast an openly transgender actress in a regular role. Annie Wallace plays the high school’s new head teacher, Sally St. Claire, making her first appearance on this day.

Jean Nicolas Arthur (20 October 1854 – 10 November 1891) was a French poet who is known for his influence on modern literature and arts, which prefigured surrealism. Rimbaud was known to have been a libertine and for being a restless soul, having engaged in an at times violent romantic relationship with fellow poet Paul Verlaine, which lasted nearly two years. Paul-Marie Verlaine (30 March 1844 – 8 January 1896) was a French poet associated with the Decadent movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry. Rimbaud and Verlaine began a short but torrid affair. They led a wild, vagabond-like life spiced by absinthe and hashish, and were known as the “poets from hell.”

1970 – Forty members of the Gay Activist Alliance including Vito Russo (July 11, 1946 – November 7, 1990), Morty Manford (1950-1992), Jim Owles (1947-1993), Arnie Kantrowitz (born November 26, 1940,, and Arthur Evans, and Columbia graduate student Pete Fisher invade the offices of Harper’s Magazine with a news crew from WOR-TV New York to protest the article  “Homo/Hetero: The Struggle for Sexual Identity which presented homosexuality as a mental illness. The article was written by Joseph Epstein who lamented homosexuals as “an affront to our rationality”. GAA president Arthur Evans verbally attacked editor Midge Decter for publishing an article which would add to the suffering of homosexuals. Although the Harper’s zap falls to elicit an official response from the magazine, it has an enormous impact oil future media coverage of lesbian and gay issues, in addition to leading to GAA’s national Television debut in a three part television news series on gay liberation.

1970: To protest a September 1970 Harper’s cover story entitled “The Struggle for Sexual Identity,” in which editor Joseph Epstein had lamented homosexuals as “an affront to our rationality” and homosexuality as “anathema,” Columbia graduate student Pete Fisher stages a sit-in at the magazine’s Park Avenue offices with 40 other Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) members. Although the sit-in does not elicit an official response from the magazine, it leads to GAA’s national Television debut and has an enormous impact on future media coverage of lesbian and gay issues.

1977, Canada – A meeting between Quebec Human Rights Commission and representatives of the gay group ADGQ results in public recommendation that the government amend Human Rights Charter to include sexual orientation.

1979

1992, Canada – The Federal Court of Canada orders the military to lift the ban on gay and lesbian service personnel. The Defense Department declined to appeal the decision.

1992 – Allen Schindler (December 13, 1969 – October 27, 1992) , a gay American sailor, is beaten to death by his shipmates for being gay.  He was killed in a public toilet in Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan, by Terry M. Helvey, who acted with the aid of an accomplice, Charles Vins, in what Esquire called a “brutal murder”. The case became synonymous with the debate concerning GBT members of the military that had been brewing in the United States culminating in the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” bill. The events surrounding Schindler’s murder were the subject of ABC’s 20/20 episode and were portrayed in the 1997 TV film Any Mother’s Son. In 1998, Any Mother’s Son won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Made for TV Movie.

1992: The Federal Court of Canada orders the Canadian military to stop discriminating against gays.

1992: Allen R. Schindler, Jr., an American Radioman Petty Officer Third Class in the United States Navy, is brutally murdered for being gay. He was killed in a public toilet in Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan by shipmate Terry M. Helvey, who acted with the aid of an accomplice, Charles Vins. The ensuing murder case becomes synonymous with the gays in the military debate that had been brewing in the United States culminating in the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” bill.

October 27, 1997 – BET-TV withdrew an invitation to Keith Boykin (born August 28, 1965) to appear on a show with Angie and Debbie Winans. The Winans objected to his presence on the show which featured their anti-gay song “It’s Not Natural.” Keith Boykin is a CNN political commentator and a former White House aide to President Bill Clinton. He teaches politics at the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University in New York. Boykin’s wrote the book For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Still Not Enough August, 2012. From December 2003 until April 2006, Boykin served as president of the board of the National Black Justice Coalition, a Washington-based civil rights organization dedicated to fighting racism and homophobia which he co-founded.

1997 – Tommy Windsor, a top investigator with the South Carolina’s Attorney General’s office, is forced to resign  after emailing derogatory comments about people of color and homophobic slurs.

1998

Jazz singer Peggy Lee suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. She was left mute from the stroke.

1999,

Canada – The Ontario provincial government changed 67 statutes to give same-sex couples equal treatment as heterosexual couples.

USA:  The Fourth Court of Appeals in San Antonio, Texas rules in Littleton v. Prange a post-operative transgender woman remains legally male and therefore her marriage to a biological male was invalid.

2003: Statistics from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation show that 16.7 percent of hate crimes committed in the country in 2002 were due to bias against the victim’s perceived sexual orientation, the highest rate in the 12 years federal records have been kept.

2005 – WNBA basketball player Sheryl Swoopes (born March 25, 1971) comes out. She is a retired American professional basketball player.  October 26, 1970A wake was held at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin. The singer who died of an accidental drugs overdose had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her demise. The party was attended by her sister Laura and Joplin’s close friends; Brownies laced with hashish were unknowingly passed around amongst the guests. 51 CE, Rome – Titus Flavius Domitianus (51-96) was bon in Rome. The Emperor is the first recorded case of a married man leaving his wife for a man, a mime named Paris. After a public outcry Titus killed Paris and went back to his wife. However, he continued his affairs with young men so his wife had him assassinated.

1783 – Deborah Sampson (December 17, 1760 – April 29, 1827) is honorably discharged from the Continental Army after serving under the name Robert Sampson. General Henry Knox at West Point presides.Deborah Sampson is honorably discharged from the Massachusetts Regiment. Wounded in one of several battles in which she fought, Sampson had escaped discovery for almost a year and a half until falling sick with a fever. One of the earliest American examples of a passing woman, Sampson formed several attachments with women while dressed as a man. She later marries and receives a military pension.

1929 – David McReynolds (born October 25, 1929) is born. He appeared on the Socialist Party ballot, becoming the first openly gay individual to run for President of the United States. He is a pacifist activist who describes himself as “a peace movement bureaucrat” during his 40-year career with Liberation magazine and the War Resisters League. He lives in New York City.

The court was petitioned by David Norris (born 31 July 1944), an MP in the Dail of Ireland. Norris is an Irish scholar, independent Senator and civil rights activist. Internationally, Norris is credited with having “managed, almost single-handedly, to overthrow the anti-homosexuality law,  a feat he achieved in 1988 after a fourteen-year campaign. He has also been credited with being “almost single-handedly responsible for rehabilitating James Joyce in once disapproving Irish eyes”.Norris is a former university lecturer and a member of the Oireachtas, serving in Seanad Éireann since 1987. He was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in Ireland. A founder of the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform, he is also a prominent member of the Church of Ireland.

Barbra Streisand scored her fourth US No.1 album with ‘Guilty.’ Also on this day Streisand started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with a song written by the The Bee Gees ‘Woman In Love’, the singers only UK No.1.  Streisand made it a sweep of the top three charts with the #1 AC song as well–“Woman in Love”. Barbra Streisand registered the fifth #1 song of her career with “Woman In Love”, taking over from Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”.

Barbin was a French intersex person who was determined as female at birth and raised in a convent, but was later reclassified as male by a court of law, after an affair and physical examination.

 On the Opra Winfrey show, an interview with Madonna aired. Madonnna discussed her adoption of an 18-month old boy from Malawi in the 30-minute interview.

2012 – Allyson Robinson becomes the leader of OutServe-SLDN, working on LGBT issues in the military. She is the first transgender person to do so. She attended West Point before gender reassignment, graduated in 1994 majoring in her undergraduate degree in physics, and was then commissioned as an officer serving in the U.S. Armyuntil 1999. She held the rank of Captain. Also prior to transition, she became an ordained Baptist minister, earning from the Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity (M.Div.). Robinson has been married to Danyelle Robinson since 1994. They have four children.
