She died at the age of 85 in 1957. In 2008, she was inducted into the California Hall of Fame.

1899 — American Samoa is obtained by the United States. It has no law against sodomy, making it the only “free” jurisdiction of the United States.

1900, France – Actor Colin Clive (20 January 1900 – 25 June 1937)is born in Saint-Malo. Clive studied acting, and replaced Laurence Olivier in the stage play, Journey’s End, in 1927. James Whale (22 July 1889 – 29 May 1957)was the director. The two struck up an intimate relationship, and Clive played the lead in Journey’s Endwhen it moved to the Savoy Theater in London in 1928. Clive was embraced by Whale’s theatrical friends including actress Elsa Lanchester. He followed Whale to New York City and Whale facilitated the casting of Clive in the movie version of the play. Journey’s End(1930) was Clive’s first of 18 feature films. Clive appeared on Broadway in Overture(1930-31). When the play closed, he went to London and starred with Elsa Lanchester in The Stronger Sex. Clive is perhaps best known for playing the role of Dr. Henry Frankenstein in the James Whale directed Frankenstein(1931) and in the Bride of Frankenstein(1935) with his friend Elsa Lanchester. Though Clive was gay, he married actress Jeanne de Casalis in 1929, but the marriage was one of convenience, and they separated a short time later. Clive was a member of the Brit ex-patriot actors in Hollywood including Lanchester, Karloff and Charles Laughton, and remained close with Whale. The actor struggled with his identity and suffered alcoholism and depression from an early age. His drinking became more and more problematic professionally. He often came to work drunk and passed out on the set. He was even fired from a starring role in a film when he suffered a breakdown. Clive’s final film was in 1937, The Woman I Love. Colin Clive died on June 25, 1937, of tuberculosis complicated by chronic alcoholism. He was 37 years old. Actress Mae Clarke, one of his leading ladies, said, “Colin was the handsomest man I ever saw and also the saddest.”

The Civil Rights 60s: When the Boomers were under 30

1960:

1960 – U.S. Court of Federal Claims overturns the Other Than Honorable discharge issued by the Air Force to Fannie Mae Clackum (June 10, 1929 – August 16, 2014)for her alleged homosexuality. This is the first known instance of a homosexuality-related discharge being successfully fought, although the case turned on due process issues and did not affect the military’s policy of excluding homosexuals from service. Fannie Mae Clackum and Grace Garner served as US Air Force Reservists in the late 1940s and early 1950s. When the Air Force suspected them of having a homosexual relationship, it arranged for a four-person overnight trip and motel stay. The U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations used those events as the basis of a series of interrogations in April 1951. Clackum and Garner refused to accept the dishonorable discharges the Air Force offered them and demanded a court-martial. They were demoted from corporal to private, discharged in early 1952 and  spent eight years fighting their discharges in the US Court of Claims claiming denial of due process when denied courts-martial and discharged administratively. They prevailed in 1960 when the court invalidated the discharges and awarded them their back military pay for the remainder of their enlistment periods.

1963 — Earl Kade, a prisoner at the Ohio Penitentiary is killed by another prisoner because he had solicited him. The grand jury refuses to indict the killer for murder, stating that the willful killing of a non-violent person from behind bars was justifiable if the person had solicited.

They subsequently married in Washington, D.C. on April 6, 2010. In celebration of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in all 50 states, they renewed their vows at New York City Hall with Mayor Bill de Blasio officiating on June 26, 2015.

1977 — The Washington State Supreme Court upholds the firing of Wilson High School [Tacoma, WA] teacher James Gaylord for being gay after he joined The Dorian Society, a Seattle support group for gay men. The court agreed with a lower court that “A teacher’s efficiency is determined by his relationship with students, their parents, fellow teachers and school administrators. In all of these areas the continued employment of appellant after he became known as a homosexual would result, had he not been discharged, in confusion, suspicion, fear, expressed parental concern and pressure upon the administration from students, parents and fellow teachers, all of which would impair appellant’s efficiency as a teacher and injure the school.” Gaylord testified, “I quite frankly find it rather galling to have sat through the school board hearing and once again through this trial and hear administrators say that I’m a good teacher, I’ve been a very good teacher, and yet to be without a job, particularly when I see other people who still hold their jobs who haven’t read a book or turned out a new lesson plan or come up with anything creative in years.” In his dissent, Judge Dolliver said, “Historically, the private lives of teachers have been controlled by the school districts in many ways. There was a time when a teacher could be fired for a marriage, a divorce, or for the use of liquor or tobacco … Although the practice of firing teachers for these reasons has ceased, there are undoubtedly those who could speculate that any of these practices would have a detrimental effect on a teacher’s classroom efficiency as well as cause adverse community reaction. I find such speculation to be an unacceptable method for justifying the dismissal of a teacher who has a flawless record of excellence in his classroom performance.”

1979:

Catania was the first openly gay member of the D.C. Council and one of a small number of openly gay Republican office-holders. This led to a conflict within his party when President George W. Bush spoke in favor of an amendment to the United States Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Catania opposed the amendment and became a vocal opponent of Bush’s 2004 re-election. In response, the District of Columbia Republican Committee decertified him as a delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention. Catania announced his endorsement of the Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry, one week prior to the convention. In September 2004, Catania left the party and became an independent, citing his displeasure with its direction on urban and social issues. He was re-elected in 2006 and 2010 as an independent. 1998, India – Over 200 right-wing activists, called Shiv Sainiks, storm two theaters and force managers to suspend the screening of Toronto director Deepa Mehta’s internationally acclaimed film Fire, the first Indian film to focus on a lesbian relationship. Fire is a 1996 Indian-Canadian romantic drama written and directed by Deepa Mehta, and starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. It is the first installment of Mehta’s Elements trilogy; it is succeeded by Earth (1998) and Water (2005). The film is loosely based on Ismat Chughtai‘s 1942 story, Lihaaf (The Quilt). It was one of the first mainstream Bollywood films to explicitly show homosexual relations. After its 1998 release in India, certain groups staged several protests, setting off a flurry of public dialogue around issues such as homosexuality and freedom of speech. On December 2nd, more than 200 Shiv Sanaiks stormed a Cinemax theatre in suburban Goregaon in Mumbai, smashing glass panes, burning posters and shouting slogans. They compelled managers to refund tickets to moviegoers. On December 3rd, a Regal theatre in Delhi was similarly stormed. When attackers attempted to shut down a screening in Calcutta, however, ushers and audience fought back and the movie stayed open. I could forgive the sexual experimentation. After all, he hasn’t cheated, and it happened before we met.

What hurts is that he has lied to me about who he is. We’ve talked about past relationships and who we find attractive many times. Not once has he mentioned liking other men.

He’s known he’s bi for most of his life — since he was 14 — and never told anybody before because he felt confused and ashamed.

LGBTQ2 Blogger Nina Notes:

Most of the above is copied from one of the sites cited as sources in the daily post and as linked at the end of every post.

the history of nonheterosexuals and different historical eras views are such that there is a there is a danger to apply current decadish of time, in 2021 to past decades and centuries; particularly without application of complete history.

There is a difference between adopting male attire in the era when clothing was spelled out in law, and lesbians who passed in public, differ from those who only change clothing for personal sexual gratification, in private “cross dressors” in the language of this same era.

Laws regarding clothing exist in many nations, including capitol punishment, this is why sexual orientation is a demographic, That heterosexual women continue to be denied reproductive rights, education and professions, even where won at court; that women are a demographic. That male and female persons who are ethnically different from the majority population and with differing experiences being merged into colour blind visible minorities are differing demographics.

the farther back in time the given individual is, and why on this blog, there is a under theme of Elvis Presley, as the most prominent modern era person of the 1900s Current Era; who was photographed almost every day of his adult life., and who’s number of days on this planet have resulted in his being one of the most recognizable individuals across all cultures on the planet, which in 1950s was 1 billion people, and by his death almost 4 billion, to the 8 billion currently existing on earth.

the history of nonheterosexuals and different historical eras views are such that there is a there is a danger to apply current decadish of time, in 2021 to past decades and centuries; particularly without application of complete history.

BCE to The Suffragettes

1726, Germany – The man who might have been the first gay king of America was born in Berlin. Prince Heinrich of Prussia was the brother of Frederick the Great who tried have him made King of America. The fledgling US even considered it during the period ruing the Article of Confederation, but, by the time the fickle prince agreed, the equally fickle American public had opted for the Constitution and a republic.

01-18-1904 – 11-29-1986 Cary Grant (b. Archibald Alec Leach) – Born in Bristol,

England. He was an English-American actor, known as one of Hollywood’s leading men. At the age of 16, he first arrived in the U.S. with a vaudeville act and instead of returning to England, he formed his own group called “The Walking Stanleys.” His film career began in the early 1930s and continued on until his retirement from acting in 1966. He wanted to be a father to his daughter, his only child, while married to Dyan Cannon, his fourth marriage. He was married five times. Grant also lived with the actor Randolph Scott off and on for 12 years. There have been many rumors that the two were lovers, denied by both actors. New revelations have surfaced with the release of gay costume designer, Orry-Kelly’s documentary, Women He’s Undressed, available on DVD. Kelly, who

was seven years older, writes in his memoir that he met the struggling performer Archibald Leach — who would change his name to Cary Grant in 1931 — just before his 21st birthday in January 1925. Grant lived with Kelly for awhile. Film historian William J. Mann says in the documentary that Kelly and Leach (Grant) were definitely a couple. The two men briefly ran their own speakeasy in Manhattan — and had an even more short-lived casino in Nevada before they were shut down by gangsters. According to Kelly, he was clearly annoyed with Leach’s obsession with blonde women, “though he always comes home to me.” Mann also states in the documentary, that Scott attempted suicide when Grant married actress Virginia Cherrill in 1934. Grant’s 1942 application for US

citizenship lists him and Scott — who signs as a witness — as living at the same address. Kelly’s memoir was discovered in a pillow case at an Australian relative’s home in 2014 while the documentary on Kelly was being made. His memoir and the documentary, chronicles his volatile, on-and-off relationship with Grant for over three decades. While Kelly stops short of claiming that Leach (Grant) was his boyfriend — something the documentary states outright — Kelly leaves a clear impression of someone whose heart was broken many times. Grant never publicly acknowledged his relationship with Kelly — but when Kelly died of liver cancer in 1964, Grant was one of the pallbearers.

1928 – Betty Berzon (January 18, 1928 – January 24, 2006) is born. She was an American author and psychotherapist known for her work with the gay and lesbian communities. She is survived by Teresa DeCrescenzo, the president of Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services, whom Berzon met in 1973 and married during a mass wedding ceremony at the 1993 March on Washington. In 2007, Ventura Place in Studio City was renamed Dr. Betty Berzon Place in her honor, making it the first street ever officially dedicated to a known lesbian in California. He was an innovative English novelist whose eight short novels, partly inspired by the Londonaesthetesof the 1890s, especially Oscar Wilde, consist largely of dialogue, with references to religion, social-climbing, and sexuality. His best novels are Caprice(1917) and Concerning the Eccentricities of Cardinal Pirelli(1926). Firbank was not without his own eccentricities. He wore two dressing gowns at once, painted his nails, lived in an apartment painted black, and owned only books bound in blue leather. Openly gayand chronically shy, he was an enthusiastic consumer of alcohol and cannabis. He died of lung disease in Rome at age 40. Susan Sontagnamed his novels as part of “the canon of camp“in her 1964 essay Notes on ‘Camp.

01-17-1897 – 10-19-1981 Nils Asther – Born in Hellerup, Denmark. He was a Danish-born Swedish actor active in Hollywood from 1926 to the mid-1950s. Known for his beautiful face he was often called “the male Greta Garbo.” “Sailor” was a favored term of Garbo’s meaning male, usually bisexual, friends. On location in Catalina with Aster, she was overheard berating the actor for grabbing her so roughly. “I’m not one of your sailor friends,” she reminded him. The source of the quote was Ken DuMain, a former WWII sailor who became a “bit” actor and extra. He met Asther on Hollywood Blvd. in the 1940s and enjoyed a long term relationship with him. Aster worked with Joan Crawford on Our Dancing Daughters, 1929, and in Dream of Love, 1928. Crawford is said to have believed Aster to be gay. In 1935 Asther found he could no longer get jobs in Hollywood after he was put on a studio-based blacklist after an alleged breach of contract and dogged by persistent rumors of homosexuality. Between 1935 and 1940 he was forced to work in England. He made six films there. He returned to Hollywood in 1940, and although he made 19 films up until 1949, his career was never the same. In 1958, he went to Sweden and managed to get an engagement with a local theatre. He got four film roles in Sweden and Denmark before finally giving up acting in 1963. For his contribution to the motion picture industry, Nils Asther has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6705 Hollywood Blvd. He died in Sweden in 1981.

The couple remained together for more than sixty years. “If she had been a man, she would have been considered one of the great American band leaders,” contends music historian Jeannie Pool, but the music establishment “kept dismissing girl players as a novelty act, a freak show.” In the 1974, Gilbert founded the Dixie Belles, a band composed of older women musician. I think, however, it is rather important. 1847, Canada – Eliza McCormick of Ontario is arrested after posing as a man and proposing marriage to a woman. A Hartford, CT newspaper dubs her “a female Lothario” for living as a man. McCormick had taken on a male persona for two to three years and during this time had at least six courtships, three to whom she proposed and was accepted. One of these women, a dressmaker, even made her own wedding dress. According to The Transgender Foundation of America’s (TFA) Archive in Houston, Texas, social shame was used to force McCormick to conform to typical gender norms after McCormick was jailed.

BCE to The Suffragettes

01-13-1832 – 07-18-1899 Horatio Alger, Jr. – Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He was an American author, best known for his many

horatio-alger-jr

novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble beginnings to lives of middle class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the “rags-to-riches- narrative,” which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. On December 8, 1864, Alger was installed as pastor with the First Unitarian Church and Society of Brewster, Massachusetts. Early in 1866, a church committee was formed to investigate sexual misconduct reports about Alger. He denied nothing, admitted he had be imprudent, considered his association with the church dissolved, and left town. Church officials reported to the hierarchy in Boston that Alger had been charged with “the crime of…unnatural familiarity with boys.” Alger sent a letter of remorse, and his father assured them his son would never seek another post in the church. Officials of the church took no further action.

1834 – Horatio Alger (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) is born in Revere, Massachusetts. He was a prolific 19th-century American writer, best known for his many young adult novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the “rags-to-riches” narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. As a Unitarian minister in Brewster, Mass. he often traveled to New York where he sought to improve the condition of street boys. His experiences became the fodder for over 100 books. But, back home in Brewster, a parish committee charged him with “gross immorality and a most heinous crime, a crime of no less magnitude than the abomination and revolting crime of unnatural familiarity with boys.” Alger denied nothing, admitted he had been imprudent, considered his association with the church dissolved, and left town. Alger sent Unitarian officials in Boston a letter of remorse, and his father assured them his son would never seek another post in the church. The officials were satisfied and decided no further action would be taken. Alger was known to have mentioned his homosexuality only once, in 1870.

01-13-1885 – 12-04-1962 Anna Vock – Born in Anglican, Aargau, Switzerland. She was the leading activist of the LGBT movement in Switzerland during the 1930s. Homosexuality was illegal in Switzerland for men, but not for women, although it was not well regarded, which enabled Vock more leeway than men, despite being watched over by the

anna-vock

police. In 1931, Anna Vock and Laura Thoma formed the group Amicitia (Friendship) with the aim of organizing lesbians and to get them out of being isolated. It was advertised discreetly as a “women’s club.” Because heterosexual women wanted to join, Vock and Thoma founded a new organization called Excentric making it a group only for lesbian. In 1933, after dissolving Excentric, Vock formed Freundschaftsverban Amicitia Schweitzer (Swiss Association of Friendship) that included both sexes. In 1942 the name was changed to Der Kreis (The Circle, 1942-1967). It was the main homosexual publication in Europe. All members used pseudonyms in the journal. Vock was Mammon (Mammy). Due to the personals section, Vock was charged with “tolerance” and sentenced by the courts. She was later acquitted on appeal. Through their campaigns, the sodomy laws were repealed in Switzerland, following a referendum, as part of an overall review of the penal code in 1942. She died in Zurich in December 1962. In the January 1963 issue of Der Kreis: “Farewell, Mammon. Your name will remain forever attached to our cause in Switzerland. You prepared the ground on which we must build. Hopefully we (will) succeed.”

1898, Germany – The Reichstag debates a petition urging the revocation of Paragraph 175. Promoted by Magnus Hirschfeld (14 May 1868 – 14 May 1935) and signed by dozens of prominent German opinion leaders, the motion is supported by only one political party in the Reichstag, the Social Democratic Party led by August Bebel. The Reichstag votes against reform. Hirschfeld  was a German Jewish physician and sexologist educated primarily in Germany; he based his practice in Berlin-Charlottenburg. An outspoken advocate for sexual minorities, Hirschfeld founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee. Historian Dustin Goltz characterized this group as having carried out “the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights“.

01-13-1931 – 10-06-2019   Rip Taylor (b. Charles Elmer “Rip” Taylor Jr.) – Born in Washington, D.C., he was an American actor and comedian. The Hollywood Reporter called him “a television and nightclub mainstay for more than six decades” who made thousand of nightclub and television appearances. He was known for exuberance and flamboyant personality, including his wild mustache, toupee, and his showering himself with confetti. In 2005, Taylor appeared as the grand marshal of the Washington, D.C., Capital Pride parade. Taylor was a close friend of Liberace and cut the ribbon at the Las Vegas estate auction of Liberace’s estate in 1988. At the time of Taylor’s death, he was in a long-term relationship with Robert Fortney.

01-13-1931 – 05-25-2007 Charles Nelson Reilly – Born in South Bronx, New York. He was an American actor, comedian, director, and

game show panelist. His big break came in 1960 with the successful original Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie. He had a small onstage part, and was the standby for Dick Van Dyke in the leading role of Albert Peterson. In 1961, Reilly was in the original cast of another Broadway hit, the Pulitzer prize-winning musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He was the winner of the 1962 Tony Award for featured actor in a musical. In 1964, he was featured in another Broadway success, Hello Dolly. He received a second nomination for a Tony Award. On TV he appeared on What’s My Line and probably is best known for his appearance on The Match Game. Reilly did not publicly affirm his homosexuality until his one-man show, Save It for the Stage. In a 2002 interview with Entertainment Tonight he felt no need to note this, and that he never purposely hid being gay from anyone. Patrick Hughes III, a set decorator and dresser, was Reilly’s domestic partner. He died of pneumonia at his home on May 25, 2007. That weekend the Game Show Network was dedicated to him, airing his funniest episodes of Match Game.

01-13-1938 — 11-22-2013   Lee Glaze – Place of birth unknown, he grew up in Paramount, California, and was already out of the closet as a teenager.

Glaze was the owner of the gay bar The Patch, and refused to comply with Los Angeles’ prejudiced law that outlawed same-sex couples from dancing in public. If Glaze spotted any undercover officers, he would yell, “God save the queen.” He was known as “The Blond Darling.” The Patch had a clientele of gay men and women that included many women from the local roller derby circuit. In August 1968, the bar was raided and several arbitrary arrests were made, including Tony Valdez, the boyfriend of Rev. Troy Perry. It was that incident that Rev. Perry realized that he should form “a church for all of us who are outcasts.” Bail was posted for all those arrested by The Patch. The Black Cat Tavern and The Patch played a pivotal role in the gay rights movement before Stonewall.

He also wrote a biography of Jean Genet. From 1980 to 1981, White was a member of the gay writers’ group, The Violet Quill. His autobiographic works are frank and unapologetic about his promiscuity and his HIV-positive status. He is currently a professor of creative writing at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts.

In the 2012 election he predicted the Presidential Election getting 50 out of 50 states and the District of Columbia. His prediction for the 2016 November election was totally wrong. Silver is openly gay. “I’ve always felt like something as an outsider. I’ve always had friends, but I’ve always come from an outside point of view.” When asked what made you feel more of a misfit, being gay or being a geek, he replied, “Probably the numbers stuff since I had that from when I was six.” Silver plays poker semi-professionally.

LGBTQ2 for January 12

BCE to The Suffragettes

1757 – Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1757 – July 12, 1804) is born in Nevis, British West Indies and was probably t least bisexual. Rumor has it he was a “boy” to George Washington who called his young patriots his family; Hamilton was the favorite. Hamilton also exchanged love letters with another revolutionary, John Laurens (October 28, 1754 – August 27, 1782), an American soldier and statesman from South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, best known for his criticism of slavery and his efforts to help recruit slaves to fight for their freedom as U.S. soldiers.

1825 – Bayard Taylor (January 11, 1825 – December 19, 1878) is born. He was an American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author, and diplomat. Though not gay, in 1870 he wrote and published Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania is published, which is possibly the first American novel about a homosexual relationship. It presented a special attachment between two men and discussed the nature and significance of such a relationship, romantic but not sexual. Critics are divided in interpreting Taylor’s novel as a political argument for gay relationships or an idealization of male spirituality.

01-12-1856 – 04-14-1925 John Singer Sargent – Born in Florence, Italy to American parents. As a child, he traveled throughout Europe

with his parents. He was sent to study art in Paris in 1874. In 1915, he moved to London, England. Sargent was considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. He also created about 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as many sketches and charcoal drawings. It is now thought that he was gay based on the views of his friends and associations. His erotic and previously ignored male nudes and portraits, include those of Thomas E. McKeller, Bartholomy Maganosco, Olimpio Fusco, and that of the artist Albert de Belleroche, which hung in Sargent’s dinning room. Sargent met Belleroche in 1882 and had a long intense romantic relationship with him.

01-12-1896 – 07-11-1973 Nobuko Yoshiya – Born in Niigata Niigata Prefecture, Japan. She was a Japanese novelist, and was one of modern Japan’s most commercially successful and prolific writers, specializing in serialized romance novels and adolescent girls’ fiction. She was a

nobuko-yoshiya

pioneer in Japanese lesbian literature, including the Class S genre (Japanese term used to refer to strong emotional bonds between schoolgirls). Several of her stories have been made into films. She had a 52 year relationship with Monma Chiyo, a mathematics teacher. She was one of the first Japanese women to emulate Western fashion in the 1920’s by cutting her hair short. Yoshiya was also one of the first Japanese women to own a car. She designed her own house, and

nobuko-yoshiya-2

was the first Japanese women to own a racehorse, which along with golf, would become a passion of hers. In 1957, Yoshiya adopted Monma as her daughter, the only legal way for lesbians to share property and make medical decisions for each other. Upon her death in 1973, her house became the Yoshiya Nobuko Memorial Museum. Her study has been left as she had it with her handwritten manuscripts and favorite objects on display.

patsy-kelly

01-12-1910 – 09-24-1981 Patsy Kelly (born Sarah Veronica Rose Kelly) – Born in Brooklyn, New York. She was an American stage, radio, film, and television actress. She was known as the “Queen of Wisecracks” playing in a series of short comedy films produced by Hal Roach in the 1930s. In the 1940s she worked in radio and stage. She also became a lifelong friend, personal assistant, and frequent lover of Tallulah Bankhead. In 1971, Kelly return to the stage in the revival of No, No, Nanette for which she won a Tony Award. At a time when being openly gay was not acceptable, Kelly was open about her sexuality. wrote under the pseudonym Michael Field. As Field, they wrote about 40 works together, including a journal, Work and Days. From the late 1870s, they lived together and over the next 40 years were lovers and co-authors. Their intention was to keep the pen-name a secret, but it became public knowledge, not long after they had confided in their friend, Robert Browning. They wrote a number of love poems to each other, and their name Michael Field was their way of declaring their oneness. Edith died of cancer in 1913 and Katherine died less than a year later. They are buried together at St. Mary Magdalen Roman Catholic Church, in Mortlake, England. Their extensive diaries are stored in the British Library, and have been digitized and made available by the Victorian Lives and Letters Consortium.

He had a brief relationship with lead-guitarist of The Kinks, Dave Davies, and supported Elton John in coming to terms with his own sexuality. He died of a severe chest infection in Vancouver, Canada. He was survived by his partner, Felix “Oz” Rexach.

It presented a special attachment between two men and discussed the nature and significance of such a relationship, romantic but not sexual. Critics are divided in interpreting Taylor’s novel as a political argument for gay relationships or an idealization of male spirituality.
