The movie “Citizen Kane,” directed by and starring Orson Welles, co-starring Joseph Cotton, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead, Ruth Warrick, Ray Collins, and Everett Sloane, premiered in New York.

1950

Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize. She was honored for her book of poetry, “Annie Allen.”

May 1, 1963

Lesley Gore lip-synced “It’s My Party” on ABC-TV’s “American Bandstand.”

1979

Elton John becomes the first Pop music star to perform in Israel. In three weeks time he’s the first Western solo pop performer to tour Russia.

1982

Barry Manilow scored his first UK #1 album when “Barry Live In Britain” went to the top of the chart. The LP was recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in London in January and would go on to reach Platinum status.

1993

George Michael, Queen and Lisa Stansfield went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘The Five Live EP’ which was recorded at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert held in April 1992, at Wembley Stadium, London.

2001

Lisa Marie Presley sold her waterfront mansion in Clearwater, FL, to Kirstie Alley.
