1940

Billboard issues its first chart detailing what records are selling the most copies. Titled “National List of Best Selling Retail Records,” it’s a precursor to the Hot 100 and the first to count record sales (the existing charts are for sheet music sales, jukebox play and radio plugs). It’s not an exact science, as Billboard polls record stores to find out what is selling – a practice that stays in effect until the ’90s, when call-a-clerk is replaced with Soundscan technology. The first chart is dominated by big band hits,

Peggy Lee recorded “Why Don’t You Do Right” with Benny Goodman.

1946

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan entered the R&B hit list with “Petootie Pie,” reaching #3—pretty good for a B-side. The A-side was the huge #1 hit “Stone Cold Dead in the Market.”

Fan’s of rock & roll music were warned that tuning into music on the car radio could cost you more money. Researchers from the Esso gas company said the rhythm of rock & roll could cause the driver to be foot heavy on the pedal, making them waste fuel.

July 27, 1973

The self-titled debut by the New York Dolls is released via Mercury Records (and produced by Todd Rundgren). The album spawns such glam/proto-punk classics as “Personality Crisis,” “Looking for a Kiss,” “Trash,” and “Jet Boy.”

 Elton John’s“Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” was number two on the USA song chart

Joy Division performed at the Roots Club, Leeds, England.

1983

Madonna released her debut album on Sire Records. which included songs like “Holiday,” “Lucky Star” and “Borderline.” Rolling Stone reviewer Don Shewey opined that Madonna “has a voice that takes some getting used to” but praised her for writing “good tunes — catchy and bare to the bone.” The album peaked at No. 16 in Canada and No. 8 in the U.S.

1985

 Whitney Houston’s solo single debut, “You Give Good Love” peaked at #3. A year earlier, the then-unknown singer recorded a duet with Teddy Pendergrass, “Hold Me,” which only reached #46.

1986

Queen became the first western act since Louis Armstrong in 1964 to perform in Easten Europe when they played at Budapest’s Nepstadion, Hungary, the gig was filmed and released as ‘Queen Magic in Budapest’.

1987

Whitney Houston released her single “Didn’t We Almost Have It All”.

1991

When Natalie Cole brought the idea of singing a duet album with her late father Nat King Cole’s old recordings to her label, EMI refused. She signed with Electra Records, recorded the album, titled Unforgettable. . .With Love, and today topped the album charts. Natalie Cole moved to #1 on the Album chart with Unforgettable With Love.

1996

Faux Lesbian marketing helps The Spice Girls score their first UK number one single with “Wannabe,” spending seven weeks at number one. The song won Best British-Written Single at the 1997 Ivor Novello Awards and Best Single at the 1997 Brit Awards.

2000

The “NSYNC Live” performance at Madison Square Garden was shown on HBO.

1967The three day Monterey Pop Festival in California began. All the proceeds went to charity when all the artists agreed to perform for free, the ‘Summer of Love’ was born. The festival saw many of the leading Rock acts of the time appeared, and the first major US appearances: Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel, Canned Heat, The Mamas and The Papas, The Grateful Dead, Eric Burdon and The Animals, The Association, Booker T. and The MGs, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, David Crosby and Steve Miller. John Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas would later write, “San Francisco” (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) about the festival, which became a big hit for Scott McKenzie later in the year.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood had their second UK No.1 single with ‘Two Tribes.’ It stayed at No.1 for nine weeks making Frankie Goes To Hollywood the first band to have their first two singles go to the top of the UK chart. During this run the group’s previous single ‘Relax’ climbed back up the charts to No.2.

2004

The three surviving original members of the New York Dolls perform together for the first time since 1975 at the first of two shows at London Royal Festival Hall. The concerts are spearheaded by The Smiths‘ frontman, Morrissey, who was once the president of the Dolls’ UK fan club. The band continues to record and perform in various incarnations after the reunion.

Liberace first appeared on the TV soap opera “Another World”. He also was a guest VJ on MTV later in the afternoon.

Whitney Houston topped the pop charts with “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” while setting a record for most consecutive #1 singles. It was her seventh, beating out both the Bee Gees and the Beatles, who each had six in a row. (Houston’s record was partly because Elvis Presley’s run of #1 from 1956 through 1957 stopping being counted. )

Founder member of The New York Dolls Johnny Thunders (John Anthony Genzale, Jr), died of a drug overdose. He renamed himself Johnny Thunders, after a comic book of the same name. The influential New York Dolls formed in 1972 and made just two albums. A teenage Morrissey acted as president of the UK branch of the New York Dolls fan club. Formed The Heartbreakers with Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan, and Television bassist Richard Hell.
