1372, UK – King Edward II is killed (25 April 1284 – 21 September 1327). The King was rumored to have had an affair with Hugh Despenser. Edward also had a close and controversial relationship with Piers Gavestonwho had joined his household in 1300. The precise nature of Edward and Gaveston’s relationship is uncertain; they may have been friends, lovers or sworn brothers.

1944 – Fannie Flagg (born September 21, 1944) is born. She is an American actress, comedian and author. She is best known as a semi-regular panelist on the 1973–82 versions of the game show Match Game and for the 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which was adapted into the 1991 motion picture Fried Green Tomatoes. She was nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay adaptation. In the late 1970s, Flagg had a relationship with American writer, Rita Mae Brown(born November 28, 1944), whom she met at a party in the Hollywood Hillshosted by Marlo Thomas. The couple briefly shared a house together in Charlottesville, Virginia, before breaking up. Flagg also lived for eight years with former The Bold and the Beautiful actress Susan Flannery(born July 31, 1939).
1948 – John D’Emilio (born Sept. 21, 1948)is a professor emeritus of history and of women’s and gender studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1982. He was a Guggenheim fellow in 1998and National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow in 1997 and also served as Director of the Policy Institute at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force from 1995 to 1997. Jim Oleson, his partner since the early 1980s, died at their home in Chicago on April 4, 2015.

1955
America’s first lesbian rights organization, The Daughters of Bilitis, was formed in San Francisco. In San Francisco four lesbian couples, including Phyllis Lyon (born November 10, 1924) and Del Martin (May 5, 1921 – August 27, 2008), found the Daughters of Bilitis, the first homophile organization exclusively for women. Forty-nine years later, Lyon and Martin would become the first same-sex couple ever to marry legally in the United States when San Francisco begins issuing licenses. Their marriage would be subsequently annulled by the California Supreme Court, along with more than 4,000 other couples’ marriages, in its ruling that Mayor Gavin Newsom was exceeding his authority by determining that it was unconstitutional to deny these couples marriage licenses. Then, on June 16, 2008, after 55 years in love, Lyon and Martin married again, this time legally.

2001
America: A Tribute to Heroes, a commercial-free, live TV program was broadcast on all of the major US TV networks to raise money following the September 11th terrorist attacks. The show featured performances by Bruce Springsteen (“My City in Ruins”), Tom Petty (“I Won’t Back Down”), Paul Simon (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”), Billy Joel (“New York State of Mind”), U2 (“Walk On”), Celine Dion (“God Bless America”) and Willie Nelson (“America The Beautiful”). Accepting pledges over the telephone were Robin Williams, Meg Ryan, Danny DeVito, Sally Field, Jack Nicholson, Goldie Hawn, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kurt Russell, Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, Whoopi Goldberg and many more. The broadcast and soundtrack album helped raise over $128 million for the victims and their families.

2010 – Dan Savage (born October 7, 1964) and husband Terry Miller upload their first It Gets Better video on YouTube, to help prevent suicide among LGBT youth. Dan is an American author, media pundit, journalist, and activist for the LGBT community. He writes Savage Love, an internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column. He has also worked as a theater director, sometimes credited as Keenan Hollahan.
